Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Roll all 3 "problem" classes like me! Interestingly enough, each of those classes are the only ones even remotely interesting to me. My main will be a theif, then necro, then a mesmer. I also want one more alt which i think will be a warrior. I just want a good heavy armor class really.

I dunno - having played a Thief for so long during the BWEs, I just couldn't really get a good feeling for the class. It's really fun to be able to escape from just about anything, but you can do that with any stealth class. I often felt rather helpless in combat though, and I tried just about every build for that profession.

Any chance they're going to rework the Mass Invisibility elite? Thieves do the same trick with not only one but two of their utility skills, with a shorter cooldown (that last only one second less with trait). It's really a rather lazy ability and waste of a elite skill slot

Anyone else disappointed that they have limited the elite skills? I loved being able to capture them. Its cool that they still use a limited amount of skills on the bar, that was smart.

However, Dual Spec in WoW was never meant to be a "pick two flavors" thing; it was a (very post-release) patch to alleviate the hole they had dug themselves in with the whole "want to play a healer, but you're soloing now? TOUGH LUCK" thing. It wasn't meant to change your DPS playstyle, but a way to be viable in two completely different roles which were needed BY DESIGN in dungeons. GW2 has no such hard enforcements; if your build is good for soloing, it's good for dungeons and nobody needs to sacrifice themselves.

See? You put a perfect example. Being one or the other is just different flavors of DPS; neither prevents you from playing content meant for the other.

I realize its just two flavors of dps, but I just dont understand why I cant have it since having that is not game breaking in any way. All it will do is give me more enjoyment. Whats wrong with that?

Some of you might enjoy this. Interactive character creator on youtube. At first i was like, yes! I can mess around with sliders and presets and the like. Nope. Its just about your choices. Still useful i guess if you want to see the most interesting intro for story purposes

OK, one question. Why stop at two? Why not three? If three's good, why not four? I'm not actually sarcastic, I want to know why "two" is better than both "one" and "three".

It seems to me that "two" is an entirely arbitrary number. The whole idea of having character specializations is so that your character build and choices feels both more unique and that they have some weight. There seems to be important to strike a balance between that, and being locked into bad decisions. The problem is that this point of balance will subjectively vary greatly from one player to the next. Many hardcore RPG players might, in fact, consider that TOO MUCH of your character can be changed on the fly; that having both your entire ability set AND major traits not set in stone goes counter to their idea of customization. Others will rather want to have everything resettable without any fee, and for you to be able to change trait point allocation everytime you want. So, who's right?

Neat idea, especially for seeing them visually and in motion. This is probably better if you want to read the answers, though:

The people who want to have everything resettable without any fee, of course ;)

Personally, id take saved specs though since it would be more convenient for me to not have to respecc constantly if i want to go with a different way of playing. As for how many specs, well, id be perfectly happy if you could have as many as you wanted. I think that would be pretty sweet

Yea, that definitely is smoother. Only downside is that it is in french and doesnt show the intro at the end

do racial skills depend on the choices you make during the character creation, or do you automatically get every skill (once you unlocked them) for your race? I never quite managed to figure that out.

I kind of agree with you. I suspect locking specs is an artifact of MMOs wanting you to play as long as possible, and therefore making you play different character specs from the ground up even for the same class. Still, I understand that respec costs are quite cheap in GW2, so I'm guessing out of all MMOs, it's one of the most "generous".

Does the Youtube version show the complete intro taking into account all your choices? If so, color me impressed because that's a lot of combinations.

I see that on their skill tool page, but didnt/dont see it on that one. Odd

Yeah, it's not super obvious and was about to post that in the original post. Worse, while in the skill calculator you can append a bit to the URL to make it always be in English, you can do no such thing with the character calculator, for some reason.

Also, a random thought, did anyone else get to talk with the actual anthropomorphical representation of the Pale Tree this BWE3? I'm asking because I'm browsing through my pics of the event and there's a couple with her, in case you want to see them later.

Just checked it. Nope (i stopped watching before fully checking since i didnt want spoilers). Cant say I blame him since I definitely wouldnt waste beta weekend capturing every combination like that.

Ah, found that flag

Actually, the intro video seems to stop right before the question-specific stuff begins. So it's kind of incomplete...

Eh, anyway, I just uploaded my pics for the 3rd beta. I have a lot more Sylvari ones than Asura, for a number of reasons.

A couple of pics I wanted to comment on:

The Pale Tree. There's another one in the gallery with one of her guards.

A place I found on Divinity's Reach for the first time this BWE, with altars, stained glasses and banners devoted to each of the gods. There's more pics in the gallery.

I really hope they have an easy way of explaining things in GW2...I just discovered "tournament points" on my account in GW1, had no idea where they came from or what they are, but they can be turned in for zaishen keys. Ended up cashing them and essentially bought my way to 30/30 in HoM.

That said, three things related to GW1:

1) Is War of Kryta worth playing for story? I was interested in playing it to see how much story-wise they added to bridge to GW2, but if it's all filler and stupid there's no point for me since I no longer need the opressor weapon.

2) Tip for those playing GW1 and need money for HoM: Farm the hero armor pieces in the Nightfall Campaign. Stolen Sunspear, Ancient Armor Remnant and Mysterious Armor Remnants are pretty silly easy to get and sell for 8k each, Mysterious netting 25k each. There's a limit of 5 per character so if you have alts that can access the missions go for it. Anyone should be able to complete the Stolen Sunseapr mission, anyone who has played PacMan should be able to get the Ancient Armor and anyone with the skill "Shadow Form" can get the Mysterious Remnants easily. That's roughly 40k per 30 minutes. (cost of an armor set before materials!)

3) If anyone trying get 30/30 in HoM wants some charity just PM today. I have money to hand out, a gold mini, two purples and a white, as well as 45 regular mesmer tomes (I love mesmer'ing). Though after today (7/29/12), assuming I don't play War in Kryta, I have no intention of ever logging into GW1 again.

Maybe. I thought it was fairly well done, but nothing really amazing. It finishes the plot thread from Prophecies about the White Mantle and the reinstatement of the Krytan monarchy. I thought the final battle was pretty fun, but again if you don't really feel like doing it there's nothing truly outstanding about it. I would suggest the Hearts of the North stuff though, but it requires finishing the War in Kryta. If you do HotN I'd suggest using a wiki for it as following the clues can be difficult.

Is what? Their models are insanely great! Or you specifically mean armor?

Both, more armor. Their models are fine, just not as cool as the concept art had me to believe they were. Lots of armors just don't seem to suit them.. i don't know.

Is that a captain planet sylvari?

I could use any help you are willing to give! I'm currently at 23 points, and only have 15 plat....and only 1 set of armor (Norn). Ugh.

Thanks for helping out the GAF community!

I tried playing Guild Wars 1 several times recently, in anticipation for Guild Wars 2 but it felt grindy and just not fun :( I'm even surprised I'm so excited by GW2.

I still need to make the 100k I need to get my final two HOM points for 30/50. I have a steam backlog to get to as well though. Oh, time, you.

I feel the same way. I downloaded the free GW1 trial and it bored me to tears. GW2 beta was a blast though. They are just VERY different games

Why is 30/50 the big cutoff point anyways? Seems like most want to get up to that point at least

I'd like to point your attention to the following post if you plan to join GAFGuild and are from EU:
the poll addresses the issue regarding which Home server European gaffers should settle in at launch.

#EU GW2 GAF - Home server poll
here's a poll for EU GAF to help us decide if
. we should join with the rest of GW2 GAFGuild on a US home server;
. we should settle on a EU home server;
. it's indifferent which home server we'll be on.

CLICK ME TO VOTE!

Thanks and do post your opinion on the matter :)

voted for #3 (which I guess makes me vote kinda useless, heh) but I don't really see why we'd all have to play on the same server. Those who roll their characters on the EU server can still participate in all not WvWvW-related guild activities.

Do not devaluate your vote and opinion :) you clearly are fine with the idea of playing on US server but also would be content on EU (at least, I suppose so..!).

I think that one of the reason to roll on the US server is to have manpower for WvWvW. As already pointed out, there aren't many European gaffers atm and
it makes sense to focus all the people in one place to have the best results and fun. But I suggest to continue this topic in the community thread.

I kind of feel similarly; GW1 feels too dated for me now. Of course, it IS dated! Keep also in mind that it was made in a pre-WoW world, with a fraction of the budget WoW originally had, with no expectation to get revenue from a monthly fee, and of course hasn't had the multiple facelifts WoW has had. Putting it all together, the game still came out impressively well. Of course, taken in a vacuum, it doesn't make it too enticing for new players to get into. Sorry, GW1 veterans, don't hate us! :(

Voted for 2.

Have irl friends who want to roll EU server, thought the home server was Gandara too? After testing it in BWE3 it seemed like a sound choice.

What you mention it's probably the most important factor for people that voted #2.
That and GMT/CET time zone.

The EU home server should be Gandara though it's not set in stone and afaik we haven't touched the subject yet:
I guess it will be the next topic in case we'll be settling on EU soil.

EDIT: poll reached more than 20 votes, which is a nice amount atm considering I counted 24 EU players.

Is that Captain Planet?

Heh! I let my GF make my sylvari and she liked blue skin the most. It doesn't make a lot of sense for a plant (outside certain flowers), but hey, the poor girl was doomed in a couple of days anyway, so...

For retail I'll either go leafy green, or barky brown. I recently found this pic and quite love the Sylvari in it:

This comes from a meta-gallery of someone who seems to be following quite a lot of GW2 galleries, including mine. Some of those pics are absolutely amazing, including breathtaking views and even panoramic pictures! Don't miss it!

I dig the colors of that Sylvari, it's very close to what I'd like to go at launch (read as headstart): dark green, red eyes and a treant-ish visage.
I'm not a big fan of blue-cyan skinned Sylvari, especially those very bright and saturated - doesn't feel very flora, violet would be fine.
I bet they're inspired by Avatar.

It's funny actually - I JUST started playing GW1 for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm actually quite enjoying myself.

See that's why I'm not liking the sylvari, the clothes gets lots on the body. Like the skirt and stuff. That's one of the betters, but even then.. hrm. I'll be a tough decision between sylvari and my norn

Oh how I long for the day that somebody figures out how to prevent clipping in an MMO. That day is not today :(

Thanks again for the help! GAF has been really generous with the HoM stuff... can't wait to get into GW2 with you guys.

"d/d elementalist pvp vid (their burst damage is rather insane)"

His burst has nothing to do with being d/d and everything to do with him bring two burst utility skills. Arcane...burst? And Arcane Blast? They do guaranteed crit damage so if you stack a ton of power and crit damage, you get really fast big crits. It also means that he only has one defensive ability and that burst doesn't exist while they're on cooldown. Pretty standard glass cannon shit.
