what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

Doesn't everyone have more trouble remember users without avatars? I think a lot of people here use avatars as a shorthand to remember who people are as they scroll down a page.

Though I am still not quite sure what revived this topic.

Well yes, but I thought once you note an offensive poster, you'd try to remember him/her by username rather than avatar since people change avatars. That's how I remember people on here, anyway.

I know, right? I had never noticed you (sorry) before you became a mod.

And I never noticed you before I became a mod!

No seriously, the first time I saw you post was when I was reading the Dating-Age topic last week

I always thought mumei was a chick.

GayGAF, not GirlGAF.

Well yes, but I thought once you note an offensive poster, you'd try to remember him/her by username rather than avatar since people change avatars. That's how I remember people on here, anyway.

That is true. But that is changing the avatar. When I see an avatar I have not seen before, I look at the name and I usually think, "Oh, that is the guy who has this avatar and posts about these things." I have been having this happen even with a poster like Gaborn, who has recently changed his avatar from that creepy old man he was wearing before. I'll not recognize the poster as him at first (though I can recognize his writing now) because of the avatar change. The avatar is almost like a mnemonic device for helping me to remember the person, and I usually don't even look at the name after I recognize the avatar. But when there's no avatar at all, I don't necessarily remember offhand, unless (Copernicus) they have used an avatar in the past or they are well-known enough.

I don't think it makes a particular difference to moderation; if you see an offensive post, you can always check posting history and see if they have any prior infractions. But in terms of just instant recall, maybe.

I have trouble thinking of long-time posters who do not use avatars at all, though.

I know, right? I had never noticed you (sorry) before you became a mod.

Before he became a mod, I had engaged in discussion with Mumei only once, in the american idol thread in a topic about belting, I said kath Macphee was good at it and he said "not so much, for belting there's Mariah". I secrelty disagree but I avoid discussion with Pop-gaf, it gets intense and out of hand way to quickly :D but Mumei, you are a nice, kind guy and it's cool to have you as a mod.

point being, to know people here you gotta go into every thread and have a massive load of interests. I basically don't know gaffers that are into politics and religion, I dislike those threads because they don't fix anything. Bigots will remain bigots, defenders will devote hours to debate and discussion and at the end nothing comes out of it. I guess it's fun to scroll and read some opinions but I prefer the fun/community stuff.

Haha ouch, not a very good first impression then, I presume. I usually stay away from debates but I didn't think that was a subject that would cause such a stink.

According to the search I just did, we also talked in 2007!

You know, it's not a very well-kept secret if you tell everyone! And hey, I mentioned Whitney, too.

But yeah, I honestly had absolutely no idea what you heard in those two clips of Over The Rainbow. They were relatively thin and unresonant belts, didn't have particularly good forward placement, had barely sustained and uneven vibrato, a slightly but noticeable strained tone, only one of those clips had anything sounding like squillo, and her voice itself is not particularly sizable. And what's more, the other one actually had pretty good resonance and an open throat and more even vibrato at the end of the note, though it still wasn't a patch on the best belts I've heard from dozens of singers. Still baffling to me.

But at least you get it right about Karen's voice, even if you are nuts about belting. ;)

I don't think so. Sometimes people learn some things. Sometimes I learn some things. Often through the process of arguing about things I come to a better understanding of other people's positions and arguments, as well as of my own. Sometimes people who are just reading the argument will post and tell you that something you've said changed their mind. On rare occasion someone you are arguing with will tell you that you've convinced them. And sometimes bigots get banned. I wouldn't do it if I thought it was a completely futile exercise.

Though I also prefer the fun stuff.

Me too ... but then again I usualy think people are the gender of their avatar and always saw his avatar as a short haired girl ....

Also helps to see him in almost every feminist topic xD

Johan is a boy. And what do you mean "almost"? You mean I missed one?

Haha ouch, not a very good first impression then, I presume. I usually stay away from debates but I didn't think that was a subject that would cause such a stink.

Mm. I am not a fan of PUA, though I don't want to make this topic about that.

Don't criticise any AAA game until it's been out for at least a month. By then most people will have realised that once again the AAA designation has nothing to do with the degree to which a game is balanced, polished, innovative or even fun.

I thank Halo 3 for helping me learn this lesson. Twice.

And I always thinking that your avatar came from an anime like Utena .. you know .. those bishoujo girls.

And GAF lately have been crazy .... like a simple discussion about bannings and not bannings suddenly becomes a discussion about ...people's gender !
If that happens, from a random discussion like 3DS XL screen size goes to rape culture it needs just the blink of an eye ! xD
I actualy have no idea .. just said almost all threads because suddenly MY brain started ignoring most of those...

I don't think Naughty Dog games are applicable to that for this site - their games seem to have supreme barriers.

I don't know what the secret to not getting permabanned is, but I will share how I got temp banned to help some of you young whippersnappers out.

I said that I liked saving games to my harddrive on my 360. Then I got temp-banned, EVEN THOUGH, I thought it was clear that it was an advertised feature of the 360 to let you save your games to your hard drive so you wouldn't wear your disc drive out (still requires your disc to be in your drive though).

I got temp-banned for three days and I was pretty angry the entire time wanting to ask someone what the big deal was. When I finally got unbanned, I figured it wasn't worth the trouble and just dropped it.

Moral of the story: If you say something that can be interpreted in a way that can get you banned, put a disclaimer or don't say it.

I'm surprised thread derailment is allowed.

It's actually one of the things I love about gaf, the conversation can change organically and it isn't a big deal. I hate forums where the mods come in and close things down when the conversation takes a small detour from the main point of the thread.

Definitely. The most active Lego forum on the internet is a shithole because of the over moderation. Threads will right themselves most of the time.

De-railing was one of the reasons listed for my last ban.. which I believe came straight from Evil-Lore.

It wasn't really why I was banned though. Considering I was also partly banned for....

.... not de-railing.

Yeah it gives a sense of community when it's not overdone so I'm glad the moderators lighten up on it.
Anyways, leave the bronies alone.

I dunno, it's just hard to get good discussion when someone derails something, and they get away with it (e.g. Pop-GAF invasion in that funny Bieber thread).

I don't think there's a secret.

I've been banned three times and I really can't figure out why.

Ban 1: A guy made a thread asking for help with transmitting certain video formats from his Mac to his television. The first or second guy to reply said something along the lines of "I'm glad I have a PC with HDMI. I don't have this problem." I was new to Gaf, so I made a criticism of Apple for not including HDMI in their computers despite my low quality netbook having one. I was called out on the statement by someone saying that I "should take that crap out of here. This isn't the thread for that." I was somewhat puzzled because he didn't call out the guy who said he was happy he had a Windows PC with HDMI. But I immediately apologized and edited my post. Still got a 3 week ban for it, though. It would have been a month, according to the mod who banned me, but luckily my quick edit knocked a week off.

Ban 2: A user made a terrible thread about men in the US being raped more often than women. His link led to a non-credible article with non-credible sources. I knew it was shitty at first sight. I made a post saying, "I can't wait for _________ to see this," referring to a user well-educated on the topic and passionate about it. Unfortunately, this post backfired because said user felt upset that I did this. I was banned for three weeks. Funny thing, since making that post, I've seen more than half a dozen like it mentioning the same user in various threads. I was, needless to say, very upset because by this point I felt like I was being unfairly picked on by mods.

Ban 3: Made a comment about the strength of biological bond between parents and their biological offspring. Compared that bond to the bond shared between adoptive parents and their adoptive children. Made this comment in a related thread, in a related way, wasn't rude, didn't push the point, didn't make up anything. Banned for two weeks for making "hurtful statement."

In short, there is nothing you can do to avoid being banned, and by extension, probably nothing you can do to avoid being perma-banned. Chances are, one day you will make a comment that you believe is entirely relevant to a thread, civil, non-demeaning, unhurtful, scientifically supported, etc... and you will be banned. The mods are charged with using their own discretion. They're humans, they're not perfect. When I first got approved for Neogaf and was allowed to post, I never dreamed I would be banned. "Nuh-uh, not me," I thought. The only people I had seen who were banned had posted clearly inflammatory statements with no other visible purpose than to offend. So I thought it would be easy to not get banned as long as I remained relevant and polite. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. And nowadays I see plenty of posts that I think are ban-worthy but the posters get away with it.

I thought t-dawg ended up with dev.

I wish they had edited you out of the LOTR books, there I said it. ;)

Don't post often, lurk more. It's been working for me.

If you think someone is wrong, you don't actually need to correct them. This took me a long time to learn, I would feel the need to squabble over the most trivial things. On another forum, long ago, I got into a 15+ page argument about a guy who stated the Pyro was the easiest class to play in TF2.

Now I don't feel like I really need to argue about anything, even issues I feel strongly about. I feel that the vast majority of disagreements on the internet just cause needless strife, and ever more rarely does one side or the other convince each other.

The same applies to a lesser degree in real life. I don't know the alternative, but it seems like debates only ever serve to entrench the opposing sides further into their own viewpoints. Not just the debaters, but the people viewing the debate as well.

Non-antagonistic debate is always good, irl or here. It's part of the reason I still read GAF. If not most, then a large part of the discourse isn't just argument for arguments sake. I tend to avoid mega-threads on hot-button topics though, because they usually just depress me.

you have awesome powers as a mod :D, did we really have some communication in 2007? Can you tell me what was it?

Neogaf was insane back then, my threads and posts, other people's threads and post, even some mods's threads and posts were sometimes donwright insane. I think that by today's standards, I'd be already perm'd. Neogaf has come a long way, and we have all evolved and matured with it.

regarding belting, lol :D to tell the honest truth, I think we are talking about different things and I think I really don't know what the term "belting" means. I tried wickipedia for "Belting" and didn't get the explanation I was looking for. What you say here and in the AI thread sounds right but that wasn't what I was trying to show with MacPhee's videos. My point was that in AI, she was screaming and the last tone was butt ugly, vibrato suffered, etc. In the other live performance, the last tone is superbly supported, that's how you hold a high, long tone and THAT's what I was calling belting, aka using your diaphragm to give support to your tone which brings beauty, stabilty and power (other example, "I will always love you" by whitney houston, the "big" note), Macphee definitely has that in that clip (not the AI one). Mariah is a technical wonder and she belts and does every trick in the book as she pleases but your example seemed pretty random regarding belting, according to my (apparently wrong) definition of the word. Towards the end of "Can't live" there's my idea of a relative high register with clear tones beautifully executed by Mariah. eh, enough derail, hehe. (Conclusion: I am nuts or wrong or both)

and Karen Carpenter = <3

The better question is:

How does one become a mod?!!? HM
You wait at this particular bar at a particular time on a particular day. If you're in, then EviLore will walk up behind you and give your ass a hard squeeze. You do not look at him or speak to him. You just pay for your drink, get up, go home and start sprinkling sawdust on GAF's vomit.

you have awesome powers as a mod :D, did we really have some communication in 2007? Can you tell me what was it?

Um.

Well, actually, if you go to advanced search, and then put your name in "User Name" under "Search by User Name" and then put another poster's name in the Keyword(s) box, you will be able to find any time you mentioned that person.

That's how I found those posts; it doesn't require any special mod powers. I occasionally use it to see if I have ever talked to someone. I sometimes find interesting things from years past.

I don't think you're completely wrong on the definition. I think that you're right about using the diaphragm to support and hold an extended note (though belting doesn't necessarily need to be extended, and a less extended but still properly produced note is better than an improperly produced note that is held for a long time), for instance, but that you aren't putting as much emphasis on the agility in the note, resonance, the freedom, the ease, how much of a ring they achieve on it, their placement, etc. which are also important parts of a belt. I think that I don't think that the McPhee examples were particularly good on several of those parts (e.g. not very much freedom (and by association not very much resonance), a slight lack of ease, little ring except ironically on the end of the AI clip, etc.). She did sustain the note very well, though.

And Mariah and Ken Lee is also a great example of belting.

and Karen Carpenter = <3

Mmm. Every Monday, every rainy day. I like sad songs.
