what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

I have one more interesting case from the archives for the mods

do you guys remember that one time (quite a while ago) where a guy opened a thread about self-mutilation, at first he'd post pics of his chest cut with a knife and then would also encourage people to show their self-inflicted "injuries"?

of course the guy was banned, thread closed and no further comment was done, everyone who saw it was terrfied. I know it may seem self explanatory but upon reflecting on that matter, what exactly would be the TOS rule that he breached? or was it something so discusting that there was no need to go into a moral debate there?
I don't know which thread you mean but it's obvious the guy needed serious profesional help, not a random internet forum. Hopefully he talked to someone irl instead about it but we'll never know.

yeah but he's right, not that guy.

I think it was very long ago, around the time my GAF-account was accepted (2006), before the newer wave of mods (charelquin, Stumpokapow, et all) arrived and the guy seemed to be into death metal and that kind of hardcore gothic (or hard rock? don't know the terms) stuff and such. I do remember the thread reaching a couple of pages before being closed. it's the kind of stuff you really don't want to know or learn about in internet forums... I was just curious as to how can a moderator deal with that. At that point, it seemed to be a measure of "you are disgusting and don't want to see anymore of this, seek help and good bye" kind of banning, understandable but hard to deal with.

I guess it fits into some kind of unsocial behaviour that would get you banned anywhere.

What if banning him pushed him over the edge
True, that's always a risk but I'm pretty sure the mods view it in a similar way to how it's not generally a good idea for amateurs to give out medical advice. I mean "go see a doctor!" is basically a gaf meme by now. Seems like the same ball park to me.

Sam with the guy whose brother was charged with a sex crime and he started posting about pending legal matters.

This is a great thread, I love how we're just discussing.

To be honest I guess if you're posting images of your mutilated body that's ground for a ban, but you do have to worry about what happens when people lose their outlet on the internet to show their pain. It's like putting people in prison for minor drug offences, you know? You run the risk they'll become hardened criminals and/or suicidal.

What happened? :O
I have no clue, it got locked and possibly deleted. Some guy found out his brother who lived with him and his family (or was around them at least) was arrested from some sex related crimes. I think it was a European country, me and most of legal GAF told him to shut up, and get an admin to nuke the thread and consult a lawyer.

You should probably delete this post tbh

I don't know if it's just me but the batches seem to get progressively worse.

Forums have their own "culture" that evolves over time.

When people start to read a forum and want to join it, they probably absorb and mimic certain behaviors.

There's definitely a few people who are PROUD to be cruel assholes (or just plain ignorant) and, as such, the 'crop' seems worse since they're just emulating what they expect.

That's the role of mods, to crackdown on those who are detrimental to the community as a whole. Another forum I know of cracks down on LOL and other lamespeak and new posters generally know better by the time they get an account.

you should post about things that you care about. really just post and be true, and don't be a dick hole.. only post when you feel the calling.. the calling of NeoGAF.com

I rarely do. Usually light hearted stuff. I like reading but I know if I get involved in anything I have any passion about it will just turn to some cyclical Internet arguing nightmare. I'm not interested in that.

Maybe you can find a circle jerk thread about a topic you like. Do you like My Little Pony, humans of the same gender or Nintendo consoles?

Nintendo threads are circlejerk threads? To me it seems like the only bastion of common sense in gaming threads especially when Gaming tends to make more troll threads.

I try to never post in debate threads and I make extremely middling and boring posts. I doubt I'll ever get a ban
or a tag
, but you never know...

what the hell is this

I just figured it out.

p.s. PARTY ON DUDES

Really any thread where there is a fanbase there will be circle jerking.

Yeah, but so far that WiiU thread seems to be more controlled, like say, due to mods and having level-headed posters and what not, compared to that Vita thread (which mind you, makes me surprised that it's still not moved to community).

Any thread in "community" is a circlejerk. It's a bunch of bros talking together not wanting any outside voices disrupting their jerks.

The Vita thread really should be in community.

I don't know why it isn't.
