Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/b/325740823
This video starting at 20:00 shows a really REALLY cool Thief build with a guy who knows exactly what he is doing. Seriously, watch him play the tournament match, he plays 3v5 and then 2v5 and manages to never die and get tons of kills/contests. It's AWESOME.

Nice gameplay, but the stream quality is butts. You can tell that their stream setup is wack because during the loading screens it's totally fine.

Hey GWGaf, have you guys decided on a server yet? At the moment I'm really torn between which server/guild to choose since I think that's probably the most important decision come launch date, as it would determine the first few people you meet and level up with, compared to switching guilds a month or two down the road and being an outsider, essentially.

Anyone else having that dilemma or are most of you guys going with the Neogaf guild? I'm choosing between Giant Bomb, Reddit and Neogaf right now, with Team Liquid as a peripheral guild as well.

Hate to do this, but I'm asking one more (last) time....

If anyone has any War Supplies and Hero armor trade-ins they are willing to part with, I would be extremely appreciative.

Right now, I am sitting at needing:

8 Oppressor weapons for 3 more points
4 Hero armors for Xandra, Kahmu, Magrid the Sly, and General Morgahn for 1 point.

As for GW2 related ...

Thanks for posting the thief video :)

26 days!!!!!!

No server choice yet. Basically waiting to see where all the big alliances go and avoid them like the plague. I dont think there is all that much rush, especially when they are probably going to be announcing at least a few new servers.

I'm pretty sure that most of us are joining/joined the GAF guild. You could always join all of those guilds, find out which one you like best by a bunch of server guesting, and then go with that. Only downside is you cant guest for WvW, but guilds, leveling, and server swapping is very flexible so i doubt many will feel like an 'outsider' simply by not picking the correct guild or server in the beginning

I think the Mesmer is definitely going to be an investment class - might not work the way it should at first, but once I level one up and once the eventual fixes get applied, I'll have experience and a lot of levels with a truly wonderful class.

Even with its problems, I had a blast with my Asura Mesmer in BWE3. I put all my points and gear into +Power and got myself a Greatsword, and I felt quite powerful.

Whats all this about a greatsword with a mesmer? How viable is a melee mesmer? This has been my one HUGE Problem is that I want to go melee but with all the weapon swapping and different classes how good is a mesmer with melee weapons?

Melee mesmer is the only decent way to play them. Greatsword mesmer isn't melee though. You'd think that, but then you find out your auto attack is this retarded "shoot laser from greatsword hovering between your hands" bullshit.

Sword/pistol is good though.

So is a Mesmer a melee character? I figured Warrior/Guardian/Thief were the main ones and the rest "could" be but weren't very viable.

As much as I read about the "any weapon for all" type of gameplay I'm sure there are some limitations (like I've read about ranged and Guardian). But what exactly is the Mesmer class? Any basic MMO classes you could compare them too?

Mesmer can be either ranged or melee, but I don't think their ranged options are very good.

Mesmer currently is a...????

I don't think even ArenaNet knows what they're supposed to be. With Sword/Pistol you just play like a melee semi-spellcaster class. Your sword abilities are good melee attacks that do deal good damage and you have a cripple. You get illusionary duelist (which is big damage) and a ranged stun/daze/immobilized (it attacks 3 players). It doesn't really compare to any other class I can think of.

I've been watching a lot of Mesmer videos, and to me it looks like it is intended to be some kind of rogue/mage hybrid. If I had to boil it down that's probably how I'd describe it. Greatsword doesn't sound like it would fit that archetype, but really it's only for looks and operates as a spellcaster weapon ala the staff; the skill set seems set more for damage than the staff's utility.

Interesting. I really wish I would have tried out different classes but I was too caught up in just exploring and getting use to the general mechanics of the game itself.

The Mesmer sounds exactly like the type of class I want to be. I want to do Warrior because it's my "go to" and safety class ... but I want to try out some magic and different mechanics while sticking with my melee roots.

Where's the best place to read up on the class?

Have they said anything regarding the region switching? I'll be moving from Japan to Europe a month after the game launches and buying a second copy isn't an option.

i think you can travel to any sever as a "guest" and you can do everything from PVE to SPVP but the server you pick as "home" can only be for WvW

You need to have a EU copy of the game to play from there. I imagine you could proxy if necessary. I'm pretty sure they just filter by IP. What server you play on is unrelated.

Anybody pre-ordered from Sainsburys before? They have GW2 going for £30 which is the best I can find. Not too bothered about the headstart event since it costs so much more.

Btw, will EU have its own entire guild, or will it just be seperated for WvW? I ask this because we could have everybody in the main (US) guild, so everybody could guest over for guild stuff, but when people want to WvW then they can switch to represent EU GAF.

Also, I registered on gafguild.com but used a fake email lol :(

I'm getting excited to try this now. Almost every time I buy a game for $30+ I do some research on it first and at least read about the main features, classes (if there are any), skills, combat, etc. For GW2 I just blind bought today, never played GW1, have no idea about the classes or combat, nothing. Not gonna play in the beta either, I'm going in like a total noob and will love every minute.

In PvP, my Mesmer felt like a Troll class when going clone heavy. I found that giving myself blink and invisibility did a great job to throw enemies off attacking me to attack my clones instead - it was a great feeling to watch enemies go a few moments attacking a fake me while I pelted them with damage. Blink seemed to throw enemy players off even more than invisibility in practice, but only if 2 or 3 clones were up already.

So two builds I'll go with on my thief.

The condition build which I've done before... and a backstab/stealth build I've never tried. Never even tried backstab either... I didn't learn about the skills you get w hen stealthed until after BWE1, which was the last time I tried thief.

I'm thinking of starting with Thief myself after watching a lot of videos from BWE3. I'm a sucker for high mobility classes, and they've got some crazy shit on that front.

I wasn't a fan of their teleporting crap, a lot of it seemed gimmicky. Ya sword allows me to teleport in then back out... but then what? I guess switch to gun? Well fuck I was just in the guys face.. why do i wanna teleport out? Hardest thing about this game is getting in range.

I assume that is meant to close off that direction of escape for the target, or give you an out if you teleport into some shit you can't handle.

The fact there's a utility skill that does the exact same thing doesn't make me happy either. Talk about running outta ideas, any other class have a weapon skill that does the exact same thing as one of their utilities?

Can anyone point me to some info about how big the world is. I am very much into exploration and poking around all corners of a map. Curious how big this game is vs WoW, or Tera, or other MMOs.

There's items devoted to poking around. There's a flag item you plant, and the farther away it is from any other planted flag the higher you will be on a scoreboard or something. Haven't seen the item itself, but data digging has found it. So ya, exploration is a big part of it. There's vast jumping puzzles (with chests at the end) as well as getting rewards for exploring the entire section of zones.

I know for a fact that zone sizes are larger than say WoW's as I've done direct comparisons, but not only that, space isn't wasted and is filled with content. If you like exploration, there really isn't a better MMO in recent times.

Between hidden DEs, hidden merchants, Jumping Puzzles, Vistas, mobs grant more XP the longer they're alive, exploration flags, and other things we may not know about, you will absolutely love this game if you like to explore.

As an example, inside one of the cities there's a hidden jumping puzzle/maze with deadly traps that is EXTREMELY well hidden and at the end of a perfect 13 minute run of it it ends with a
karma merchant that sells pirate weapons

That I know, but when they've announced the locked, they've also said something along the lines of "We get that people travel. Stay tuned for more info." and I was wondering if we're still in the dark about that.

THIS is what will make me buy this game...hehe.

Rata Sum? It's only city I know that has a jumping puzzle.

You might like this video (or listen to it if you dont want to spoil the visuals of a zone). Total biscuit seems quite pleased with the sense of exploration and wanderlust that the game offers.

Im confused on how this will work. I mean, what the hell happens when you go back to that area? or an area close to it? Seems like a very weird system if its not some zone event where you have a certain amount of time to run away from it and the person farthest away at the end 'wins'

Or maybe im just missing something

The theory is you put it off in some remote spot. Like getting to some odd spot in a jumping area. Guessing the flags won't be a common item either, or people could just flood areas with them.

Well it shouldn't matter where you go after you plant the flag, only where the flag was planted in relation to where others have planted theirs.

I think a cooler idea would be if you got a flag and planted it anywhere in the world. The longer it takes someone to find it, the better reward you got. If no one finds it in [insert time period here], it resets and you gain the maximum reward. Of course there is a reward for the person/guild that finds the flag.

Of course AN would have to limit flags so that there's not thousands of flags around the world (maybe one per guild or something, make it a guild flag).

So all you have to do is login with your guild, put flags before each other and get insane buffs. Sounds great :3

Nah, it's a stroke of genius as it is now, can't wait to find one of those things.

Ah, i get it. For some reason I thought it was taking your player into account. Its simply all about the flags, and if your flag is the farthest one away from everyone else's flag, you win. Well, that makes more sense.

I like it!

Guild Emblems video

So what exactly is/will be GAF's guild emblem? (never got invited to the guild in beta so dont know if we had one)

Seems like a decent amount of options in there. My vote would be the turtle, cause turtles are awesome

There's something like that actually.
