So I think I finally got my first abandonment today. Single Draft - Phantom Lancer was mid and mega fed. 0/5 in less than 10 minutes. Someone also got the courier killed twice - once in the first two minutes (SRSLY?) and again redirecting it like an idiot when it had consumables I needed on it, which led to my death.

So I was sitting in the fountain sort of AFK and I guess the game detected that and considered it an abandon. By the time I actually left the game it was 1/14 them at around 15 minutes in.

Also - apparently no one likes random draft? Queues for just that are extremely long, and I've never had it pop up otherwise.

Were you tidehunter? ...I think I was watching that match while waiting in line. Really brutal match, PA was destroying bottom and yeah, the score was fairly lopsided. Chances of a comeback were beyond not going to happen... so don't worry about it. Too much.

How does mTw go from essentially 4-0ing Na'Vi in a grand final yesterday to getting 2-0ed by Darer today, a team that has been struggling at best the last few weeks? They have some really strange ups and downs.

Different play styles, I guess. I heard that mTw and NaVi scrim together a lot and they seem to have found a way to counter NaVi's style but Darer like to do wacky strategies that might catch them off guard.

Went 6-0 with Keeper of the Light last weekend. I can't believe how good that hero is. Maybe people just aren't familiar with his abilities yet. That mana buff and mana drain are sooooooo good.

His spirit horses does so much damage and his mana buff allows for mana starved heroes to spam their nuke...He's just brutal right now to lane against...

The mana drain is awesome for laning and escaping. Keeps that caster harass at bay.

I also love shutting out a Sven or SK who are trying to land that stun as I run.

Sacrifice everything for last hitting, you bought re-gen for a reason, hopefully by level 6 you will have a Ring of Health and a Stout Shield. You can turn that into Vanguard/Battle Fury.

The important thing is that the more levels melee heroes level the stronger they get in the laning phase so if you can c/s as much as possible and using re-gen its worth it.

The above advice is for short lane, now if your long lane suicide lane melee, say in lane get exp and don't die.

Thanks for the tips.

I do stick to the safe line almost always and I used to get the Ring of Regen when Soul ring was part of the suggested items, but ever since they changed it this last patch, I just get Helm of Iron Will faster.

Anyone still have that script that turns a lot of the icons on playdota.com into Dota 2 icons ?

Nah, pretty sure I was PA (I go by the same name/avatar in Steam as here).

Anyway, had Dark Seer in my last single draft game. I can totally see why he's a top tier pick after playing him. Sprint is a great escape/chase tool, and being able to cast it on allies as well is pretty big. Wall, of course, is one of the best teamfight ultimates in the game if you position it right. Vacuum combos well with wall, and is otherwise a great control. And Ion Shell is more unusual, but again, can be used on creeps, allies, yourself - it has a lot of utility.

Pretty much everything you'd ever want in a support.

mtw's biggest weakness is their seeming inability to handle novel situations. Their core game is incredibly solid which allows them to trounce Na'Vi who haven't really changed their style since the first International. If I had to guess, they rely really heavily on Synderen's captaining so when Synd faces something he's unsure about they just sort of fall apart.

Lycan not touched.

NEW META GUYS

I'm hard pressed to think of a recent game that Lycan's actually won. I keep saying he's really not as bad as everyone makes him out to be.

Please don't nerf, Icefrog. Please don't nerf, Icefrog.

Yeah I was going against one with my sniper and it was brutal. totally not used to that horse spell yet. lol

I think if there were any nerfs they would have been in 6.73. AM got a slight nerf and lycan was untouched. He's probably waiting to see if the meta shifts again. Spectre use to be top tier pick and now no one touches her.

I really love the Eurogamer DOTA2 articles. Has anyone seen anything similar from a blog or gaming site? There's so much game design to be discussed with regards to dota, it could be really fertile grounds for smart writers. I find most games journalism vapid, and would perfer a smart design blogger.

Yeah I was bot lane as Dire against a Keeper and the horses are just brutal in that narrow space. He had huge harass early on which probably contributed to the other team winning the game. Just one cast of that could take half my life as a low level Windrunner.

People really underplay disruptor as a lycan counter in pub games. He's the ultimate ganker against blink heroes and heroes who run fast. I've had excellent success in pubs with him against lycan.

Hope dragon knight gets a lot of play at the international. I really love seeing him carry, something about a dragon just annihilating everything is pure magic.

And now MTW is going to the prodota2 finals, just beat Next.kz with 2-0. Kinda funny how it goes with them.

Edit: And now they're about to play another final? How much money do these guys win lately lol.

Watching that game I feel the Void lost it more than mtw won it.

In a party with Mike Ross right now, you may know him if you follow fighting games at all. Had myself quite a few laughs with the ingame chat.

dota2 maining evo stage is almost a reality... Team Umehara vs Team Wong with James Chen and Triforce commentating!

I don't know. The commentator for that game wasn't really knowledgeable and I don't think he showed the gold/xp graphs at all during that match (albeit I was distracted while watching).

But I really got the feeling that it was mtw starting to throw than it was Next.kz with an advantage. Yes, Void was starting to get going but the rest of the team was so far behind they couldn't support him. And between all the stuns and negative armour, it was pretty easy to lock him down and destroy him despite his items.

Funzi's steal was pretty well done though.

I have a question about Sven, but it probably applies to a lot of strength heroes. What do you guys do for health regen mid game? My problem is that once I've used my tangos and health potions, I struggle to regen health. Is a Vanguard a good option on Sven? I didn't really like getting it in the games I played, but are there any better options for him or is Vanguard the way to go? It just seems like I'm constantly having to head back to base mid game after every skirmish/fight and wasting time when I could be ganking.

You or someone who is ganking a lot with you should buy an urn.

Played a visage game today. Did single draft or whatever and had undying, sf and visage. I can't play sf if my life depended on it. I didn't do well with undying the 1 time. Tried visage.

That dude can rape lol. Once you use your q to steal speed and then you get max charges and use a max leveled W. holy shit. Pure nuke. So good.

Keeper of the Light, what an ass. Blowing up my carry's creepwave with his gaddman horse stampede, over and over again.

Vengeance was sweet, however. Managed to steal Illuminate whilst we were pushing up on their middle T3 tower, and it was no less than the souped-up ultimate version! He was blasting the creepwave regularly, and I responded by aiming my own Illuminates not at the tower, but at the staging ground to the side and behind it (and thanks to the Ultimate's spirit form, I could immediately run back to safety while it channeled to maximum). Kept pinging their heroes with it and kept them from sitting in easy defensive positions, and we were at last able to take the high ground and begin chipping away at the tower and barracks with the remains of a creepwave. Earlier in the match I had also stolen his Chakra Magic, which made my lack of arcane boots a complete and utter non-issue (opted instead to build power treads so that I could get the extra health or mana when I needed it).

Oh Keeper, you're the best enemy I've ever had.

Man, the amount of fucking buttons I'm using as Keeper is insane. My fingers get a workout all day. He also has one of the most armored up builds I have ever seen.

Got the Fireborn Odachi mythical Juggernaut sword this morning from my last match. Pretty neat, though I may trade it for something down the line if there's an good item for a hero I really like. I may have to play some Juggernaut now between that and the rare helm I also got for him last night. I had the uncommon cloak from earlier as well.

How disconnections (from others) affect wins?

I've played three games, one lost, two won. The game says I've only got one win and no defeats, so I guess it's got something to do with disconnections.

If they leave the game early enough (not sure how early it works until) the stats aren't recorded

That's awesome. I'm researching what it takes to try it out but I'm really new to 3D modelling. Not sure if it's going to be worth my time.

I learned in the span of a month or two about a year ago just to make TF2 items. It doesn't take too long to learn as there are so many tutorials out there for 3D modeling for the source engine. I've moved on to making Dota items now. Much higher acceptance rate, so many more characters to model for, and you can get a lot more creative since it's all fantasy armor and weapons. Fun stuff!

Lots of helpful tutorials for TF2 items here, and Dota items are very similar to model/compile etc: http://www.kritzkast.com/tf2_mod_guide

Hey, new to this thread! Been playing for a few days, but hope I can contribute somewhat ^_^

Anyway, I've been sticking to ranged heroes so far but I want to try out melee based ones. However, it's really hard to stay alive early game since while farming, it's so easy for the enemy to get a good stun and it's over for me in a few seconds. Was using Sven and I fed the enemy so much :(

and also is it better to focus on last hitting or denying?

I think we should organize some sort of mini community for those who are still fairly new to Dota... It seems that there are a lot of super hardcore players on this board, but also a bunch who have recently jumped into this game.

I usually have no problems with Sven. He has an amazing stun and his attack speed buff is great too.

I seem to remember someone creating a neogaf noob channel. Not sure if it is still active.

go to the dota 2 reddit and look at the right side of the page, says conversion script or something like that

it's in the OP.

Most of this game (more or less) is about understanding what the enemy wants to do to you, anticipating when they would want to do it, and recognizing when they've positioned themselves to do it, so that you can (a) avoid getting fucked up or (b) beat them to the punch and fuck them up. You won't have a grasp on either until you have played enough matches to understand each character (their early game and mana limitations) and what certain combinations of heroes want to do.

that will take time. Until you get a grasp on it, I'd recommend either sticking to ranged heroes with a decent range and reasonable last-hit animation (Wind, Death Prophet, Lich, etc.) or choose melee heroes that have an escape mechanism (like anti-mage, though I wouldn't recommend him if you're new either).
