Bloomberg: 7-8" iPad Mini in ~October

7.85 puts less strain on app developers iirc.

Yet when they were designing the original iPad they didn't just scale the dimensions of the iphone so as to make it easy for developers to port their apps.
*shrug* 8" is just a lazy ass solution to take advantage of their already setup factories that produces those screens.

By bumping the size up to 8" you loose most of the portability advantages that was the reason for the smaller tablet in the first place.

Time will tell if it's just small enough.

It's not all about portability, either. I rarely leave the house with my Kindle. But its smaller size makes it more comfortable to hold on the couch and rest on my stomach while I read in bed.

A more comfortable iPad -- at $250 -- is very attractive to me.

"small enough." ha

It'll obviously be more comfortable but will it be significantly more comfortable? The Kindle is significantly more comfortable but this is at least 40% larger. So I think not. If you're not taking it out the home then you might as well get the larger one, especially considering this 8" one is unlikely to have a retina display (c'mon Apple, just use the iPhone 4 screen factories :|)

Kind of funny that discussion is on an apple screen being too big suddenly. :)

I don't think many people would pass on the Nexus if the screen was less than an inch bigger.

The price and weight are probably more important. Nexus at .75 pounds and Fire at .91 while the larger iPad 2 is at 1.33 pounds. I think its much more important where this mini would clock in at. One would think if it stays with something like iPad 2 specs Apple may be able to get the thickness and weight considerably smaller by now, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I can't imagine gripping that 8" inch with one hand would be comfortable. The n7 is pushing it is as is.

The smaller iPad will be great to have around the house and kitchen for facetime, general browsing, cooking, controlling music, Sky HD (coming in September) and so on. Total luxury item but whatever :D

I really want one of these 7 inch tablets, but as a designer I'm stuck with the full size one to keep my portfolio on it for interviews and such. That iPad 3 resolution...

If you hold it like a book it would be fine, this is where weight matters. The lighter the better. If you're a weirdo that holds a 7" tab with your whole hand grasping the back, then I could see how the iPad Mini's size would be an issue.

But that is how I hold books.

;_;

I want to see Apple go all out and put a retina display in the mini, but I know that's not feasible until 2013/2014 if they want to hit low pricepoints. I can't go back after the retina display on the iPad 3.

My ideal iPad would be:

-iPad Mini size (7.85")
-Weight at .7ish lbs
-As thin as an iPod Touch
-3G/4G option
-Looks and feels similar to iPad 2, just smaller
-Retina Display
-A5X or A6
-1gig ram

Price: $250-300 for base model.

A man can dream :(

Wait a year or two.

Why would anybody get excited over a decrease in size? Especially if you already have an ipad. Not like the new model is any more pocket friendly.

Price.

It's got a place, the iPad 3 is tiring for a lot of people to hold with one hand for long periods of time. Price is going to be the real important factor to american consumers though

Because, when you're using an iPad the weight is hard to deal with. When I'm holding up the iPad my hand gets tired very quickly. One day when they can make an iPad size tablet that is featherweight, it won't be an issue. But that day isn't here yet. So small tablets is the only way to to get something with a large screen that is still comfortable to hold for extended periods of time.

Do people actually hold it like this? I know you can, but is it really a comfortable enough position for actual use? If an iPad mini were too wide to hold like that, I doubt most people would give a shit.

Price and portability factor. This'll be great for kids who use iPads, for example. Sure it can't fit in your pocket, but general use would be easier.

I still would never get one. The screen real-estate sacrifice isn't worth the above factors imo, but we'll see..

The ones bolded are my predicted feature set. The thing better have identical cameras (at minimum) to the iPad 3, too. That said I would prefer a better facetime camera to a better rear-facing camera any day. I've never snapped a photo with my iPad on the rear camera. That's what the iPhone is for.

Weirdos, the lot of ya.

Ahh, there we go.
Er, that's the whole point, that's why I'm complaining. You're looking at those hand grips for a 16:10 7" tablet. The iPad mini is going to be a 4:3 7.85" tablet i.e. much wider. You definitely won't be able to do first grip and you won't be able to do second either. The weight isn't distributed like that.

That's the defining difference between a the big tablets and the small tablets, that you can hold and support it in one hand for long periods of time.

Do people actually hold it like this? I know you can, but is it really a comfortable enough position for actual use? If an iPad mini were too wide to hold like that, I doubt most people would give a shit...
Of course most people won't give a shit. They just buy the latest cheap ipad.

It depends on what you're using the tablet for at that moment. If you're doing a lot of interaction with the tablet, using a second hand, then the first grip is better because it provides a backing at all points of the screen so you don't touch the edge and unbalance the tablet. The second grip is fine if you're just reading a book and flicking pages. It's good to have options and adjust depending on the situation. But of course if it's not the apple way it has to be described as wierd...

I expect the same shit-ass cameras that the iPad 2 has on the iPad mini.

Here's hoping they actually ditch the terrible 4:3 ratio.

I can't fit the giant size tablets in my bag. The smaller models would be less of a pain to take around.

Yeah, I almost laughed a little inside when I saw my uncle bring up his iPad 3 to take a picture in the living room, that was awkward. :)

I have an iPad 2 and will be in he market for a new one next year, but would not be opposed to a smaller iPad if it's still usable. I can't wait to see what they release. I love my iPad size now but would gladly get a smaller model for what I use it for anyway.

That is never going to happen. Apple isn't going to try to actively fuck over the iPad third party developers by throwing in another resolution to put into all their apps. Sloppy fragmentation like that is why Google Play has far less third party support, even on the smartphone side of apps.

my GF has been using my ipad for a couple weeks now and she likes it over a laptop but thinks it's too big, so a mini would be perfect for her. Really would like to buy her one in the next couple months

Isn't it likely that an iPad mini would be adopt the 3:2 ratio (read:iPhone/iPod)?

With the new iPhone (and probably new iPod Touch) shifting to 16:9 4", I wouldn't be surprised if they retain the 3:2 ratio by breathing it into a 7.85" iPad.

If they did that then it would only run iPhone apps. It will be 4:3 if not 16:9. It'll either be 4:3 and retain compatibility with all existing apps. Or it'll add a third aspect of 16:9 just for the smaller iPad. I'm leaning more towards 4:3, but it will not be 3:2. Because with 3:2 it would literally be "an oversized iPod touch" and not a tablet.

The new longer iPhone is going to need some UI tricks to make the old 3:2 apps work properly. I doubt that UI design will scale well up to a 7.85" tablet.
