Breaking Bad - Season 5, Part 1 - Sundays on AMC

I'm not sure the shift was all that recently.
The interesting thing about this show is that the moment Walt crossed the line is entirely down to your own moral compass. I confess that I've been pretty much behind him up until he poisoned a kid. I suppose that says something about my own moral framework ;)

But in regards to his family.. I'd say we're only now into territory where he may start to value other things above his family. Probably, the later episodes of the series will have him choose power over family.. In an ironic reversal from what made him cook meth in the first place.

The question is does he legitimately love his children?

He nearly had them all killed and yet he continues to relentlessly press on with everything, even after realizing he's making substantially less money. Not to mention the cancer is not even a factor right now. I don't see how anyone can think he loves those kids.

Exactly. The old Walt would never have even risked it. He would've called the "cleaner" at the first sense of trouble, way before a legitimate death threat. He does not give a fuck about his family. If they were to die, the train would stop for nothing.

You Skylar sympathizers make me sick. Walt is full retard to trust in a woman like her with all of the surrounding factors. I knew she would be the one to bring him down.

I like how some of you believe that Walt is abusive, it is Skyler who is abusive mentally, & by her actions.
Fuck a guy get back with Walt only to use his hard earned money on a douche who fucked his wife & can't manage his business.
Honestly Walt should have took out the trash then & there.
Skylar has remained the sole blemish on this perfect show, her acting is great, you are supposed to hate her, She is the obvious Achilles heel.

I hope that now that she showed suicidal tendancy & is trying to take Walt's kids away, that Walt rubs her out soon.....

Excellent trolling

It's baffling how myopic some people are. Any tv show that is released, everyone will root for the protagonist; it's just some of you aren't open minded enough to realize the creators' intention and blindly try to rely on the protagonist to be the "good guy." Totally not the point of the show, but some of you persist anyway. You will always try to squeeze something good out of Walt and twist scenes so like Walt's innocent and Skyler's the bitch. It's like he brainwashed you guys, like Jesse.

don't forget that we don;'t know how far the flash forward is. the only thing we really know is that walt probably doesn't use the same date of birth on his new identity.

I like Walt a lot but I realize he is a terrible person. I sympathize with him though. He seems like a good guy caught up in serious mental issues. My only hope is when he loses it all he has his redemption and self-reflection. He deserves to die, but I hope he can at least come to terms with everything and find it within himself to die legitimately loving his family.

Also I don't think Walt will kill Skyler. It seems too predictable and his image is everything. He wants to be a happy family, at the end of the day. Having her go missing or commit suicide would tarnish the White name.

What a great episode! Things are heating up.

Walt and Skylar, holy shit. The pool scene was amazing. Their conversations were amazing.

There is a lot of stuff to talk about, but I'll leave that for later.

Walt suddenly realizes Jesse is the person who cares about him the most.

Just caught it and NOTHING STOPS THIS TRAIN, BITCH. NOTHING.

Skyler basically realizing she fucked up(her lawyer was right) and is way too deep in shit now plus that cancer line was the lowest of all low blows but she needed that to get him off her back a bit.

Lydia continues to show that she is a liability in this endevour and her actions will get them in deeper shit (next ep looks like a potential disaster already imo).

I'm gonna throw out a bizarre theory so be warned. There was that line about Skylar saying she is just waiting for his cancer to come back. I wonder if the reason she is chain smoking during the last scene is because she is trying to send out second hand smoke as possibly somehow bringing about Walt's lung cancer back. Just a theory is all.

Exactly. I still think suicide is an option.

Dude that is reaching for nothing. Everyone knows the cancer will come back he was only supposed to be living for a few months. She is just smoking just because she is a smoker and thinking about what she got herself into for the guy she thought she loved.

I doubt the writers would let us down like that.

As bad as the "MAYBE WALT IS GONNA GIVE HER A RICIN CIG" theory.

I couldn't help but think during the scene with Skylar on the couch....

Speculation, possible spoilers:
Skylar's chain smoking now, and Walt happens to have a cigarette loaded with poison.

Edit: According to the above post, I'm a moron.

Walt suddenly realizes Jesse is the person who cares about him the most.
Walt saw he manipulated Jesse and can manipulate Skyler. He is shortsighted and narcissistic to think people are pawns and can be so easily won over. Skyler does not just FEAR Walt, like Jesse did, she legitimately HATES Walt, and that will be harder to change than Jesse.

Might be. I think it was just a subtle thing. Imagery too. In the last scene, she was exhaling the smoke over to Walt's "side" in the shot, even as he left. Her doing that is a relief for her, and an attempt to give Walt the cancer. Exhaling towards him is just a huge "fuck you, I hope you die of the cancer and I will help that bitch". I don't think she will seriously give him cancer though lol.

God, something like this is so hoakey for Breaking Bad. If they did this I'd jerryseinfeldimout.gif. It'd just be so stupid. Them killing Skyler in general would be such a stupidly safe and predictable route and not true at all to Walt's character, but instead really stupid and mildly exciting storytelling. No one would hate him more for killing Skyler, so it would achieve very little in defining himself as a villain to the viewer. This did more than him flat out killing her. Besides, she technically wished death on him first. That would be so fucking stupid to have Walt kill her. Ugh.

LOL

Guys am I am a bad person for hating Skyler? So tired of her drama!

Wish they would just kill her off at this point.

I know that is a very basic way to put things but every time I see her face I just role my eyes. She's the only thing wrong with this show in my opinion. Kill her!!! Kill Kill Kill. Shit have Mike do it I don't care, Walt probably could do it himself though at this point.

Yeah. I like your theory of it being more a fuck you to Walt showing how little she cares what happens to him.

Walt being a scumbag doesn't make Skyler no longer an unintelligent and boring coward who was greedy when she didn't have to see the negative consequences of Walt's actions but falls apart like an emo preteen the first second she hears about anything.

It's stupid. Walt would also be the first suspect if Skyler died like that, especially after the latest conflict that was found out by Marie and Hank.

It's deliberate imagery almost certainly, but yeah I'm sure she's not trying to kill him with second hand smoke. But she probably is trying to remind him of it.

And I would say that the plot has been generally neutral on him being a bad guy or a good guy, with a few key exceptions (poisoning a kid)

You are simly applying your own morality to this character, and saying "he's just bad". And that's a fine response. I'd say you are moral because of it.

But some people are going to actually root for this guy, and nowhere in the reality of the show does it especially say otherwise. I'd say he'll go down in a fire of his own making... But that never stopped gangsters from idolizing Scarface.

I've said many times, how you feel about Walt is largely a reflection of your own moral character... The show has mostly refused to telegraph "oh, he's good" or "oh he's bad".

I thought that too to be honest. She's banking on the cancer just killing him, and I could see her being desperate/silly enough to hope that her smoking could help speed it along.

Oh I think you give the writers too little credit. They are deliberately constructing a story in which you are encouraged to root for a person who's rotten to the core. I don't think it's reflective of anyone's moral compass at all, but a reflection of how carefully they've manipulated the audience. To the point that they've openly stated as much and people still don't believe it. What they've constructed is amazing.

Walt being a scumbag doesn't make Skyler no longer an unintelligent and boring coward who was greedy when she didn't have to see the negative consequences of Walt's actions but falls apart the first second she hears about anything.

Once again, you have to understand why Skyler helped Walt in the first place. Skyler believed that Walt would come back to his former self, and be normal (and not in the distorted sense Walt views "normal.") She helped to clean the money, and yes, did get a guilty pleasure as she admits, but would never believe Walt would kill Gus and become so arrogant in such a short time. It's the exact opposite reason of why she got into it. That's why she's like this. And to add salt in the wound, Walt buys himself cars, keeps talking about meth and acts as if nothing happened, because for Walt, this was his plan from the beginning; but for Skyler, this was a huge disappointment and failure for her last hope to restore the family.

Rational human being: "Walt, this drug business scares the shit out of me and I fear for our children's safety. I think it would be best if I took the kids and left for a while. We'll call it a vacation or something."

Skylar: "I'M MOODY BUT I'M GOING TO BE REALLY VAGUE ABOUT IT THEN I'M GOING TO ATTEMPT SUICIDE IN FRONT OF OUR FAMILY AND IF THINGS DON'T CHANGE I'M GOING TO CUT MYSELF AND IF THINGS ARE STILL THE SAME I'M GOING TO TELL EVERYONE YOU BEAT ME! THESE ARE HORRIBLE IDEAS AND I WANT YOU TO GET CANCER AGAIN." *chain smoke*

Not if Walt made it look like a suicide somehow. Hank and Marie already know she jumped in a pool and tried to off herself.

Detective Jesse gets caught.

Skysky poisons Heisenberg with the ricin.

Heisenberg busts Detective Jesse out of jail since he's gonna die anyway.

Hank and Marie eat Holly.

It's so easy to be rational when you're sleeping with a murderer, I'm sure. You should try it some time and report back on how easy it it.

Basically, I think Walt should just live on his own .... it would improve everything

But Walt's a dick so that will never happen. At this point though Skyler just annoys the shit out of me, if they killed her I would not mind one bit. I really liked her the first 2 seasons too : (

And to all the Skyler defenders, she made her own bed. She could of went straight to the cops/DEA/or hank, she chose to participate in this. And now she's scared? Tough shit lady, you made your bed. She chose the wrong path, now she does not want to deal with the life.

Then again I could not be remembering things correctly, have not seen the old seasons in a while lol.

Can't wait to watch Skylar's downfall, if it doesn't come I'll be sad :(

edit: And it feels good to be fully caught up with a show again, caught the first 4 seasons when AMC was showing 2/3 a night last few months but only caught up yesterday.

He is 100%, irrefutably, factually bad. Not neutral. Bad. This 5 season show about Walter White and his transformation has provided enough examples to show why he's bad. It was Gilligan's intention from the start of the show.

Up until recently she was always the wife you hope you never got, a total bitch, so I don't really blame you for not sympathizing with her. But considering how sparse deaths are on this show (really, other than Krazy 8, Tuco, Victor, Jane, and Gus, who has died and made an impact? And most of those were gangsters), you can't be serious to expect that Skyler would just die. Even with the threats she made against Walt, there is little Skyler can do to hurt him, so haters gon hate basically.

Walt being a scumbag doesn't make Skyler no longer an unintelligent and boring coward who was greedy when she didn't have to see the negative consequences of Walt's actions but falls apart like an emo preteen the first second she hears about anything.
She was a greedy bitch who got in too deep but still has a shred of humanity to realize what they were doing was morally wrong. That Walt wasn't going to some day job in a factory and bringing home a couple million dollars without a risk. Having learned that your husband is a murder and your entire family, including your newborn daughter, were inches away from death, I'd say she has reason to "fall apart". Not everyone is delusional like Walt.

Haven't seen any replies to this episode yet, but to me the opening was just atrocious. Thought it was a dream sequence. Thankfully rest of episode made up for it.

Not saying there aren't insane levels of stress, fear, and mistrust going on here, but Skylar's going about things in probably the worst way possible.

edit: And Skylar didn't seem to have any problems sleeping with another criminal. Maybe Walt should switch to white-collar crime so they could install heated bathroom floor tiles and she could be happy.

Not if Walt made it look like a suicide somehow. Hank and Marie already know she jumped in a pool and tried to off herself.

It's still gonna be out of character for Walt. His ego is fed by his family and showcase of power, as moooose stated.

Great post.

I mean the only thing she can really do is say fuck it all, and go to the DEA/Hank and admit it all. Ya her life will be ruined, but if she really cared about her kids safety then that's what a good person would do. Sacrifice your life, pay for your mistakes, and know your children are safe. But yeah .... that is not going to happen probably.

And Eggman wtf? You post all good n shit in here. <3

I agree 100% Walt is very bad, basically becoming evil. But I still root for him since it's all pretend, I just like him anyways lol. In real life I would wish him prison for life, but in this show I want him to get away with everything!

I see this happening before Walt kills Skyler. This would actually be interesting and typical of Skyler. Desperate enough to disrupt peace because she completely cracks under pressure.

Too late for that to happen. If she would have done that, it would have happened before she got into the whole money laundering thing.

EDIT: It also wasn't one of Skyler's "plans", when Walt asked her on today's episode. It remains impossible to happen.
