Fighting Games Weekly | August 6-12

Jeez, how does a game inspired by American cartoons get accused of being Anime? Daaang.

Because there are far too many morons in the fighting game community. Lets not be silly though only one character in Skull Girls was inspired by tex avery cartoons. Parasoul was inspired by Mitsuru and Fillia is basically you typical Japanese school girl/Sakura

It's more like if it's not a capcom game, I'm not playing. If a pro player actually stopped being a pussy and actually took one of these games seriously, they would show why some of these games are awesome.

The Capcom "pro" players aren't really that relevant anyway. In the end, P4A's offline popularity is still going to be primarily determined by its own sales and the likelihood of the consumers to attend offline gatherings.

Seriously. I have no idea where this idea came from.
Skullgirls is very obviously a love letter to the golden age of American animation (albeit with a healthy smattering of modern pop culture references).

I ONLY PLAY THE GAMES THAT MIKE 'MIKEROSS' ROSS PLAYS.

Same thing with Mortal Kombat. All those Capcom guys bailed out once they started getting blown up in pools.

If they were serious about money some of them would have gotten back into MK when it was announced as an MLG game. The weird one with this is Chris G, who is still pretty good at MK but doesn't enter the MLGs.

Chris has stated a couple of times he doesn't like that game. Some Pro's don't play games just because the money is there.

You joke, but the only character that remotely interested me was Parasoul (or whatever her name is). The rest of the characters didn't interest me so I had no interest in the game.

That's fair enough. Personally I actually give every game a try and see if I like how it actually plays and if I like it then I don't really care what it looks like.

Why do you guys care if Mike Ross or anybody known plays skullgirls or not. Maybe he just doesn't like it. His right. Anybody's right.

Mike Ross, play SC5, please!!!

#kappa ;)

I think its because Chris G loves the capcom community more. We can all tell he isn't really a part of the TYM community at all. (and hi 16-bit =P)

Ya, but you better believe people will play a really shitty game when there's a car for the prize. :)

Because the entry is free and they are probably going just to enter into SF4 and etc

edit

Btw anybody in Socal planning to go to WNF? I want to go to the P4A tourney next week =(

I wonder if there are people who really think this. It just seems so strange of a concept to me that I can't imagine it being true.

Word of mouth, and conformity to social norms is a reality. There are people who don't buy games because of their metacritic score. They can't think for themselves, and must play the only the latest and greatest. It applies to so many things in society. All fads stem from what your friends are doing, and if you are doing something else, you feel like a loser.

That "crazyguy" Crazy Guy is buying Persona. If I don't like it or don't have fun with it, I will not keep playing it. If I do, I will keep playing!

Follow my lead people!

Shout outs to far too many in the FGC being so close-minded that they have no desire to try out games in the genre they supposedly love.

I guess it's easier being a stream monster than figuring out if you like or dislike a game through actually playing it.

Or maybe I'm just too accepting.
I mean, what kind of lunatic plays Marvel 3, is hyped for P4A, is still waiting for ports of the Killer Instinct games, and is still annoyed that Square didn't localize Tobal 2?

No use listening to pros, when your friends who you play with in real life matter more.
I hate playing online so I beg my friends to play games they aren't completely fond on and vice versa. We grow as a group solely because we compromise and learn new stuff about FG's as a whole.

Luckily this time we agree P4A is gonna be good.

Word of mouth, and conformity to social norms is a reality.

I feel like most games (outside of really niche ones like Aquapazza) get enough attention that word of mouth isn't really an issue. Social norms, I guess, is a more important thing. It's hard to play a game that has no players within 3-4 hours of you, after all.

I don't know. It feels to me like more of these have to do with your scene and competition in your area, rather than what pro players are playing it. I guess it does have an affect in a sense, because "pro players" will be the players who help level up a scene and keep providing a goal and competition for a player, so what you play will be influenced by what the other good players in your scene play. Beyond that, though, I can't really imagine people picking it up because some guy across the country is going to play it too.

It's never just one reason. Look at the community that the FGC is really made up of. It's amazingly racially and culturally diverse, which is great, but also if you look at it...except for dudes like Floe and Marn, they're NOT the stereotypical video gamers.

They're going to have some cross over with the anime (show, not necessarily fighter) crowd, but it's not enormous. And anime isn't exactly the most accepted of all cartoon styles.

So the resistance to it is completely normal whereas everyone gave MK9 a shot.
In my personal experience, a lot of players I know didn't really give MK9 a shot.

Hi. Nice avatar. When I found out there was a chick that uses a fan as a weapon I actually wanted to try out P4.

good decision. Zone all day every day. I wished more MK heads tried out other games and vice versa. Too many cliques.

O yeah fanatiq revealed that he is going hard on injustice just for the money. He think it looks god awful but he thinks he can destroy the competition and get in that MLG money.

I don't plan on playing it because fuck anime

international competition seems like its as big as its ever been and only seems to be growing. online because of better netcode, offline because of sponsorships and overall just increased motivation to travel.

Time is a limited resource. People will invest it where it has the most payoff for them. Margins matter.

Modern fighting games require a major time investment to get really good at them, so it's not surprising to me that most people don't spend much time with the latest releases. Once you've invested so much in one or two main games, anything else just becomes a distraction.

MK players are fanatical and won't lose to someone without the love of the game.

Capcom guys did well in the first 2 months of MK9 because most pure MK players were new to tournament play.

I definitely see that point, but that isn't the same as the top player dick riding. A big part of the fighting games is competition, if there isn't a scene it isn't particularly fun to just play against the computer.

He might but his SFxT was really weak. I doubt he has the same fundamentals that allows Justin to get those "early victories before the community levels up" wins. Injustice doesn't look quite Marvel enough yet.

I think it's related kinda to how crowded the FPS console genre is (obviously the scales are different).

My brother plays nothing but COD, and some Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 on the side.

He knows BF3 is good, he played the demo, but he doesn't have enough time for it (job, family). We all only have so much time to dedicate. Not to mention, he doesn't even have time for all the the smaller FPS that come out.

I think alot of people fall in this boat. They don't have all the time. The casuals just have a couple hours at night after work? Like fighting games? Already know and like Sf4 or marvel? I guess I will play that.

Just the way it is I think.

That's me. I feel like a minority even within FGC-GAF. I only have time for one fighter, even though I know plenty others are probably good games.

And even still I don't put as much time into Marvel that I wish I could.

From my experience MK people are very loyal to their game, so much that they will hate on everything else because they believe everybody else hates them and they are very vocal of it. Lately it has been better with some of their community leaders stepping in and saying it needs to stop (storms, jugg, tim static).

But on the otherhand, capcom players mainly play capcom games because of how big the scene is. They might hate the game but they will still play it because it is the most played game. Some will hate other games because its foreign to them gameplay wise and will obviously use the whole "Our game has more numbers therefore our game is better than your shitty game" argument.

Lastly it doesn't help that anime players have this stigma towards them which is "weaboos" with waifus and that they never go out. Magus even mention this a few days back.

I play competitive M:TG, which has events nationwide on a weekly basis. I don't invest time in the WoW TCG for exactly this reason- I don't have the time/resources to play a second game with less resources.

I really need to write a big thing up on how the FGC should be looking to partner with the TCG-based stores. They can really help each other, and the TCG market actually brings a good income stream to the table. (Xanadu hosts both games, as does Next Level.)

Serenity Games here in St Pete does also

Maybe just maybe Capcom players play capcom games because they like them?

Just maybe?

I'll admit an affinity for Capcom games since I grew up with Street Fighter II, so certain conventions favored by Capcom such as hold back to block just feel natural for me. But as a total Marvel 3 junkie now, I can say that I never really played any of the Marvel games in the past and only got into it because of my pre-existing love for the characters involved as well as the gameplay experience being completely novel and entertaining for me. I think there's a reason that Capcom titles continue to be so popular. Their design philosophies tend to be very satisfying to players, and nobody has more nostalgia on their side.
