The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

But how much of the game do they have to play again to see the new stuff? It's not like a total remake or anything. P4A at least is a different kind of game, and it's based around a new story. This is still the same case from before.

I remember people getting the game saying that they were getting a bunch of new scenes and stuff relatively early in.

From the Sounds and Shapes Quicklook:

"I put in an order for new TVs. Let's see what happens..." The guys are getting more more vocal about their red tape, I think. It makes me a little nervous about the future.

I would hope that people as cynical as them towards the bureaucracy of Corporate America would anticipate this stuff going in. But money has deluded better men than them, so it wouldn't be a shock.

CBSi just needs to give them a longer leash, they're strangling the site with all this bureaucratic horseshit. They're still lacking equipment and studio space, much of which they seem to have been missing since the day they were bought. Something is royally screwed up.

Dragging their feet before the Gamespot merger.

Somehow thought there was more to this game. It has a decent charm to it, but it's really just a light platformer with a largely inconsequential music gimmick. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but that was underwhelming.

I kind of feel the same way.

Who knows, it was pretty apparent that Jeff was still early into the game. New stuff he hadn't seen before was slowly being introduced as they played too.
Not my kind of game either way, though.

I've gotten over the fact that it's a 99% ripoff of Smash Bros.

My problem is that the game seems to be running in slow-mo, there is no real feel to the hits and the overall presentation seems pretty lackluster.

Thank god All Stars can get released so we don't have to hear about how it's a ripoff of Smash Bros. anymore. As if playing as Princess Peach beating up Solid Snake deserves this type of defense.

Yeah, it does seem like a really mellowed down experience. I'm starting to think they could stand to rip off SSB a bit more if it would make it more exciting.

Should be illegal to call that PlayStation All-Stars without Spryo and Crash. More like Playstation 2 and Newer "All-Stars"

Yeah, I saw that leaked stuff and, yeah I get that it's not that easy to get Crash back, but come on man. He is Playstation!

My recollection of Brawl was that it looked better than this, despite not being HD. There's too much bloom in this.

This game looks shit.

Jeff was confusing with the scores, he said how he thought it worked before a round, after the round, his score perfectly reflected what he said, and then he said he didn't understand how it worked.

It's just missing that... 'pop' that makes Smash Bros so much crazy fun. Maybe it's the music. Maybe it's the slow-mo. I get that they want to differentiate themselves with what they have, but that just... man. That just doesn't look fun.

Maybe it'll be different when I get my hands on it. Who knows.

/edit yeah, like Jeff says, you get hit and it doesn't matter. It's bizarre. The only things that really matter are the supers.

Backgrounds are cool though

I don't know what it is but it feels like it's just 4 characters jumping out mashing out attacks and hoping they hit things. Watching the Helghast (?) character whiffing the same attack constantly when he was right in front of three people in the first match they played gave me this impression.

From what I've seen of the game, which is very little, the content seems cool but the presentation just seems really bland and uninspired.

i think it the lack of ring outs is what does it fo me, the action looks subdued. also it looks really slow

also not being able to tell who is winning is a bad decision

Then why can't you see how singling out negative posts could look defensive?

You missed my complete sarcasm. I said the game doesn't look fun to play. My original post was about how the only thing people can say about the game that haven't encountered before is: "oh yeah smash bros ripoff bro, sony sucks." Which is an observation and has been proven over and over again.

I actually wish the game was much more of a rip off of Smash. Something about it, maybe the no ring outs or no actual damage being done, just makes it seem very unsatisfying.

You guys seem to be echoing the GB guys in saying they might as well have copied the game wholesale instead of half-assed.

I just look at these stages and think about playing Smash Bros, like the original Smash Bros when I was 10 or 12 or something, and loading into a stage to hear Kirby's Theme or something and just how much more active, easy to read, and just more... exciting that game is. Even though this has so many characters packed into it, it's just... bland.

Except for the backgrounds.

You kinda have to play it to "get" it. Watching a video isn't the same, imo. And the campaign doesn't really pick up until a bit later than what they showed. It's a really well made game that oozes style and charm. Also creating levels is just as fun as playing them.

To be fair watching jeff mash away with the bare understanding of the mechanics (or anyone really) always makes the game look bland.

Which is why I always find the fighting game quick looks on the site to be fun to listen to but not to watch.

I think that's probably a result of the super meter system. You don't get punished directly for taking hits, and you can only get kills through super moves that you only get access to by earning meter. Since you earn meter by hitting people, this means everyone is just wailing around trying to get a few punches in without concern for much else. It seems to breed a stale gameplay loop that is only occasionally broken by someone pulling out a short, intsa-kill super move. It completely lacks the frantic swings and pacing that makes the game it clearly wants to be fun.

Thank you for the correct words.

Like when you get hit the consequence is just too removed for you to really give a shit. Like in Smash, there's always the possibility you'll go flying into space. In most other games you're getting your health eaten or whatever. But this... it's just a whole lot of nothing.

Coming tomorrow

Quick Look: Kerbal Space Program

Oh boy

edit: Wow, that Sony Smash Bros game looks like a really bad version of Smash Bros. It even looks worse, which is quite an achievement when you're up against a Wii game. Hopefully this is just some pre-release alpha version which isn't polished yet.
