The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I wouldn't say nothing. Probably once people learn about the supers alot of the game will probably be meter management and learning tricks not to be KO'd by them.

It is not as active as SSB try-not-to-fly-off mechanics but I'll wait and see how it developes instead of the early stages where it'll take awhile before people learn which super does what and not be mashy like crazy.

I think if Sony doesn't push this game really really hard, it's going to be a dud.

The concept is good, Sony bros smashing it out and all, but the execution seems lacking. Seems like it'll appeal to super fans only.

The system seems like it would work a little better in a 1v1, since the only way for your opponent to gain meter would be to hit you. So you can actively deny them the ability to score. In a 4 player FFA there is always going to be someone to hit and the other players are always going to be gaining meter even if you have the greatest defense of all time.

I don't know what black magic they used so that twice Slys lvl 3 super didn't glitch the match lol.

Im confused, can you not block or evade lvl 3?

Parappa style lvl 3 kills everyone and can't be evaded. He can only get max 3 kills with it.

Kratos and other active lvl 3 supers can be evaded (tho it can be super hard). Can net more than 3 kills.

You missed my complete sarcasm. I said the game doesn't look fun to play. My original post was about how the only thing people can say about the game that haven't encountered before is: "oh yeah smash bros ripoff bro, sony sucks." Which is an observation and has been proven over and over again.
That's fair. I'm just making sure everyone hates what I hate, it's only human.

It's just missing that... 'pop' that makes Smash Bros so much crazy fun. Maybe it's the music. Maybe it's the slow-mo. I get that they want to differentiate themselves with what they have, but that just... man. That just doesn't look fun.

It definitely is the music. At least for me. But hey 25 years of legacy iconic music vs. Playstation.

Still on this title day 1, the fact that it is Vita compatible is great. Smash Bros isn't portable yet so I'm really interested how the portable version of All Stars turns out, especially with cross-play.

Since you earn meter by hitting people, this means everyone is just wailing around trying to get a few punches in without concern for much else.

This is really the worst thing that you can do in All-Stars if you actually want to win a match. It might seem like it's a good idea since gaining meter is the most important thing, but grouping together and just going crazy will put you in a bad position for someone (usually a Scumbag Sly player) to just throw out a random Level 1 super and kill 3 characters at once. There's definite strategy in picking your spot as you never really want to be grouped with another character for too long.

The style of the music is definately different from Smash for example. In PSASBR it's very subtle and ''in the backround'' at least for the 4 stages in the beta. Clockw0rk has confirmed that sound is still being worked on but I don't know if music will be changed. I don't think its bad but it is very different to be sure.

Edit: Maybe smash fans can use custom soundtrack if its included in the final release lol ^^. Bramble blast in every stage.

The score system doesn't sound very motivating. Maybe once I play the game I will get into it and make sense of everything.

The more I think of it, the timing of the game's existence isn't really gelling with me. If the game came out a few years ago or maybe as a launch title for the Vita or the next home console people would be a lot more forgiving. But right now at this stage of the current generation, what looks to be the whole package (including the leaks if they are true) doesn't seem very fulfilling.

New Smash Bros is coming to 3DS as well.

I've never seen a game with such polar opposite opinion from people who actually play it and those who are just watching videos.

kinda wish there is an open beta, or at least a demo in the future :x

Any links to 'higher level' gameplay? Is there even any defense stuff going on? I know that there is a block button.

Not really any links for those videos. I'd imagine 1vs1 would be more higher level focused. There are air dodges and rolls too. Some characters have counters.

Maybe it'll be different if I actually play it, but the game looks really ... bland. I don't mind if it's a Smash Bros. clone, but this just lacks the intensity and hectic nature of the Smash games. On top of that, for a fighting game it comes across as really boring.

Then again I don't know, I haven't actually played it but from the videos I've seen since it was announced and this quick look - I don't know why some people are excited for it beyond seeing all the Sony characters fighting in one game.

Didn't giantbomb make Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 look boring? At first I wanted to see scores but now I'm happy without them. It would just give you too much heat, or make you feel too confident/pressured to get points. I kinda keep score depending on how the kills look. When a guy get 3 kills with level 1 he's my enemy the whole match.

Isn't that the point though?

Like the person who had a level 3 Super as Fat Princess and didn't know it.. probably didn't realize wasn't scoring any points. But if you saw an indicator on screen, would be helpful.

Also kind of weird not knowing who is winning in a fighting game.. can change up your strategy.

I do think the general feedback the game offers is weird from playing the beta

There seems to be no real ump when you kill someone.. sometimes, I wouldn't even realize I had.. or that I died
There's no real cue to tell you that your meter has increased or you've reached a new level. Maybe something like a meter that grows bigger and pulsates more as you meter goes up

I have a feeling that fat princess didn't know the button for super, or got confused when he was locked out from using a super during another level 3. In the final game I bet they will have a interesting tutorial, or whatever. I also wonder if the no score games will be more popular than the show score games in the final.

Played and it's not good, feels really cheap and lacking. Graphics are a clusterfuck. What's worse is that the game is just a vehicle for product placement.

I can totally see the game not reviewing well at all, most people are just too nostalgia struck to admit how underwhelming it is, and it doesn't help that Superbot has an interest on official thread here so certain Gafers feel obliged to like it.

I actually wish the game was much more of a rip off of Smash. Something about it, maybe the no ring outs or no actual damage being done, just makes it seem very unsatisfying.

It's not particularly fun to watch, either. Because you can't see who's winning, there's zero tension.

I know they did it on purpose, but it makes spectating totally pointless.

Playstation Allstars looks really underwhelming and boring. Nothing snappy about it, and looks unsatisfying to play (no feedback or damage was a bad move). The shuffling background thing sounded cool on paper but it looks kind of tacky, and the stages themselves are super basic.

If they were going to be inspired by SSB they should have taken it all the way.

For PS All Stars... Someone tell me the UI, menus, menu music, character select screen, all of that stuff is just placeholder. Because holy shit all of it is atrocious.

I dunno about menu music (sounds placeholder) but the rest is indeed placeholder. One of the devs commented on it in the main thread.

In the first match with jeff, towards the end, there was a 3rd parrapa just stuck in the wall on the side running forward constantly, does he have some kind of clone special or was that a glitch?

I don't know how fun the game is, but it has terrible presentation, bad menus, music, artstyle, graphics, hit effects, it all looks so generic and bland. The stages are the best part, and even they don't look that great.

I'm also in the camp that they should have ripped off Smash even more, not a huge fan of that series, but the ring out and percentage system worked so well, and created some awesome tense matches.

I think it'll sell decently at launch, being able to ride on the fame of the game's roster - but it will not have legs. The game just doesn't look like fun. It's never going to be Smash Bros, the game you immediately pick up along with the console - and that you see crowds gather around at parties. It will launch, get a bit of attention, then die off within a month or so.

It's a beta, a real one.

The fact that there's literally only one way to kill someone breaks this game.

What do you mean? There's 3 different ways for each character, all of which wouldn't happen if you weren't building up meter using the like 16 moves each character has to build up ap.
