Fighting Games Weekly | August 6-12

HAY GUYZ, LET'S DO THAT THING THAT WE DO EVERY MONTH AND MAKE LISTS FOR A TOURNAMENT THAT'S SCHEDULED A YEAR FROM NOW WHILE MAKING SUBTLE JABS AT GAMES WE DON'T WANT TO LIKE WHILE HAVING NO CLUE HOW POPULAR SAID GAMES ARE GOING TO BE 8 MONTHS FROM NOW! YAAAAAAAY!

/clears throat

So yeah...

I'll be surprised if this isn't the list for EVO 2013:

SSFIV: AE 2012
UMVC3
TTT2
KOF XIII
Injustice
Persona 4 Arena

Looks pretty dead on, though I still think that the MK crowd will be vocal and trying to push.
I personally would love to see the new Blazblue instead of either MK or Injustice but I will have to hope for a side event because NRS will definitely put money out there.

Can EVO do 6 games in a reasonable amount of time?

Not sure if this constitutes this week or next week for this thread but thought I'd mention it.

Melee-FC Legacy is this weekend, Sunday-Tuesday, and there will be a livestream for all those days. All Smash games pre. much. Decent sized turnout too (over 160+)

Looks like Japan does have a SF25 qualifier. Taking place after the Taiwan tournament. It's going to be a ppv stream, sadly.

Is Japan that bad when it comes to finding a good place to hold a large tournament that won't break the bank? If you read the details at SRK, the tournament will be online until top 8 for each game. And it will also be single elim 2/3 until top 8 as well. I mean it's online, the least they can do is make use a 3/5 format or 3/5 rounds. Looks like the random factor will be rampant over there again as usual in Japan. Not what I nor most people wanted to see after the SBO debacle, but I guess they're lacking in man power to oversee all these online matches.

I wonder if some of the big names will really wait till this tournament to try and earn their spot because their will be only one more qualifier after this one with another one taking place in Japan on the same day.

BlazBlue 3 won't be on consoles yet, so it'll have to wait for '14, I think.

Injustice is definitely the one on that list I have doubts about. SCV pulled 500 people this year, so it getting a callback isn't out of the realm of feasibility.

I think it's silly for MK9 to take up another slot. It's numbers were solid enough for 2012(300 something), but it's gonna drop and it's gonna be at or below BB's EVO numbers. There are a ton of games with a guarantee for high numbers than MK. Hell, VF got 195 at a SIDE TOURNAMENT and games like BB and Skullgirls would definitely draw numbers from Persona. I don't expect to ever see BB at EVO again though. Injustice would probably(and rightfully) get next year's slot if it's solid and the MK folks have another resurgence near 2011's numbers.

The rules for SFxT were practically changing bi-weekly all the way up until EVO and that game came out pretty late. I don't expect to see BB at EVO anyway. Japan loves it, but that series will never resonate with the US tournament scene outside of fans.

SCV coming back would be real nice. It got solid numbers, lots of international players and top 8 was actually pretty exciting. Pretty good overall performance for a game that was nearly sent out to die.

I'm not sure about that- it depends how much Atlus's improvements in promotion help. They've done a very, very good job getting P4A exposure that's helping to grow it outside of its natural niche.

Are we operating under the assumption that the people who provide this streamed fighting game entertainment for everyone do not have a right to charge for it?

It's not really that. It's that they seem very much behind the curve in terms of pricing and accessibility.

Ok, this MLG thing is the most boring thing to watch.
I LOVE Soul Calibur, but the presentation is just so anti-hype

I think Marn is going to die and take ClakeyD with him.
He is tired and bored driving to the event, and twittering pictures of anything he can come up with.

Sounds like Marn.... no wonder Justin hasn't learned to drive he probably saw Marn driving and ran away from the car ASAP.

If you are up tonight, there will be a KOF tournament in Japan hosted on Nico.

Just copy and paste what Professor posted here

Repost as a reminder.

KOF wasn't at SBO, but it'll be getting its good share of the summer heat. Tomorrow, there's going to be the largest tournament in Japan hosted by Dune and KCE. This is the first time that East Japan and West Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) players are facing each other. This has never happened before. It's a 3-on-3, but we'll essencially be seeing who's the strongest in Japan. Kaoru will be attending the tournament, as well as Kyabetsu, Dune, Ogosho, Keykakko, most likely Woo, and a lot of other players. This is going to be big.

The tournament (in US time) will be taking place on August 10(Fri) around 11:30PM Pacific, 2:30AM Eastern, 1:30AM Central. (JP time August 11 starting 3:30PM JST)

Quick overview of top contenders

Dune "Godfather of KOF" - Well known for his KOF activities and being top at vanilla KOF13, Dune has been MIA for this full year due to bar exam studies. Will he be able to take on the other top players from a short rehab? Teaming with Ogosho and Picnic. Main characters: Karate, Kyo, C.Iori.

Ogosho - Former SBO champ for KOF and SF4. One of the very few Billy users in Japan. Main characters: Billy, Goro, Chin

Kyabetsu - 9th place winner at EVO. Won over Kaoru 2-1 and sent him home at EVO despite only learning the game for a week. Main character: Karate, Kyo, Iori

Kaoru "Kansai's strongest legend" - Lady luck wasn't on his side at EVO. Kaoru has been a mystery to the East Japan players, but they'll finally get a chance to match up against him to see who's truely the best in KOF. Main characters: Ryo, Daimon, Karate, Raiden

Woo(Uuu) - If you've seen the "vs Woo + Kaoru" vids back with vanilla KOF13, you know who this is. Woo normally doesn't attend tournaments so it's unknown if he's enterting this one, but rumor is he's teaming up with Kaoru and Kyabetsu. Main characters: Mai, Kim, Goro.

Picnic "The last supper" - Despite his cute name and being practically unknown in the English KOF scene, Picnic is around the same strength as Dune and is reportedly good enough to get wins against Kaoru.

Keykakko "Mr.Framedata" - Provider of valuable frame data, Keykakko is entering this tournament. Main characters: Hwa, Raiden, Chin

Other good contenders probably entering tournament-

Shoki - Seasoned player, one of Japan's top contenders.
Itimu Mari - One of Japan's top contenders.
Haregoro - Renowned Joe player.
Tenkawa - Renowned Ashi/Duolon player.
Yukichi - About the only Terry player in Japan. Loves KOF so much that he dreamt of playing a character in the series and decided to become a voice actor.
Shizuoka King - About the only King player in Japan.
Myu - Renowned Clark player, amazed Orochingi's Gunsmith.
Ringo - Less known player, Strong enough to send Kaoru to losers in previous Jp Tournament. Jp Tournament.

How come F.Champ is not going to the Capcom tourney?

Maybe he will go to the SoCal one just because it's close. Is there one in NorCal right before the main event like a last minute thing?

He isn't exactly a tournament winning contender in AE anymore (still top 8 contender), and he hates SfxT. He doesn't play ST or 3S...
I don't see any reason for him to go either.

Has there been much to indicate that Injustice is a game that is worth playing in tournaments? Seems deliberately not tournament friendly. For what I know, it seems more like MK9, BB, SCV, or VF5:FS could take that spot. Persona 4: Arena and FS being games at EVO would be pretty exciting to me. Haven't played P4A yet, but I think those two will be my main games for awhile. Unfortunately Skullgirls seems doomed.
