The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

It's not particularly fun to watch, either. Because you can't see who's winning, there's zero tension.

I know they did it on purpose, but it makes spectating totally pointless.
Interesting, I didn't think of that. The question is: how to fix it? I guess they could have overlays on livestreams when there's going to be tournaments and stuff, but those usually can't be updated quickly enough...

Can you spectate other people's matches within the game? Should be easy to provide a scoreboard/tally in that mode (SC2 style). But if you're just watching the screen in person, there's obviously not much they can do.

You mean like emptying the opponent's lifebar in 90% of fighting games or knocking people out of the stage in smash?

I think he means.. like in a fighter.. you can finish your opp off with any move in your arsenal.. you can knock someone out the ring with any move in your arsenal in Smash.

But you can only KO people with 3 moves in PSASBR.

No, he obviously means like in only being able to use a super. Of course there's three ways to kill others, but it's still less options than in pretty much every fighting game I can think of. Think of every possible move that can kill an opponent in other fighting games - it's your whole moveset.

edit: ^^ what Penguin said

A lot of wrestling games have finisher only matches. Seems like they should just make it an option and be done with it. But I'd be willing to bet that the game would be even more unbalanced with health bars.

Gotta echo everyone else's sentiments on Playstation Battle Roale. Only being able to get KOs with supers is not the kind of fighting game I want to play.

Isn't that not true though? Weren't some players killing others with normal attacks? Or maybe I'm just mistaking the underwhelming Levels 1's for normal attacks.

Watching that QL made me think the core mechanics looked fun to play, everything else around it not so much. There is a lack of communication there that needs fixing, like they said, but also some of the Lvl. 3 Supers look unbalanced. Kratos' easily looked the best, Fat Princess's is incoherent, and Sweet Tooth's was completely nerfed by the small stage it was in. Differentiation between the levels the Supers have and how good they are between each character may be a factor, however, that wasn't conveyed very well there.
One thing I will say in favour of it, the netcode looked really stable. Didn't see a hint of lag at all anywhere.

The weirdest thing to me about this is that I'm not sure why the stages need to have platforms and such when the only hit that matters is the supers. It's like they got the aesthetics right but didn't understand some of the practical reasons for the layout of stages.

Plus, It feels very B-tier because aside from Kratos and Nathan Drake the characters are very B-tier in general. People found fighting against Mario as Link fairly novel because of how iconic they are, but Sweet Tooth fighting Sly Cooper doesn't quite have even close to the same level of nostagia attached to it.

For a game made by 'fighting game fans', it sure doesn't seem like a game for fighting game fans.

Is there no dev gameplay footage yet of potential high level play? I might be a minority, but I try not to just judge a fighting game played by someone that just started playing it :P

If the game has depth, don't promise, show.

Well WWE Attitude.. was trying to be a fighting game with all it's Street Fighter-esque combos and the likes. But feel like you could still win without a finisher.
The games that do have that feature typically have it as a match option. So you could still win without a finisher in Attitude, if you didn't turn the finisher only option on. It tends to make for longer matches, which is fine for wrestling.

If PBR is shooting for something that casuals can play with more experienced people then maybe it's not such a bad idea. Uneven matchups tend to be over pretty quickly in fighting games. But purists would prefer to play with health bars.

While I personally agree with this sentiment, I can however imagine the Playstation generation embracing Twisted Metal and Sly Cooper with the same nostalgia the older Nintendo generation do with Mario and Link.

Sony Smash looks really unexciting. Whoever thought of not having life bars fucked big time.

It's fun to play though.

Beta will come during the end of the feel.

I dont know how much the leaked data is true but i am looking forward to know the free mode

I'm not sure if I can see it, honestly. Twisted Metal has had a pretty long period where it wasn't relevant, and Sly Cooper has been a solid but not amazing seller, so I have a hard time believing that a considerable number of the Playstation Generation have Mario/Link levels of nostalgia for those characters. At best maybe they're like Kirby level of popularity or something.

The biggest problem is that the face of the Playstation in terms of nostalgia is Crash Bandicoot, a character no longer owned by Sony, and probably the most popular character spawned during that era is Cloud, again a character not owned by Sony.

No doubt the team making the game have already thought of this, but to me the big problem with Playstation All Stars is that since supers are the only things that kill there is going to be one character with the best super and that's all anyone will ever play as.
I mean, in that quick look alone Kratos' level 3 looked way better than anyone else's since you can get people after respawn so you aren't stuck to a maximum of 3 kills like Parappa and he seems way faster and easier to control than Sweet Tooth's robot.

I love it when Vinny, Drew, and Dave all get together and Quick Look a game for an hour. Especially when that game is Kerbal Space Program.

The problem with some... like Kratos and Sweet Tooth's...and even FP.. is you aren't necessarily guaranteed any kills. I mean I've played against Kratos.. and I just take the high ground during his state... since he has to make contact with you. Same with Sweet Tooth.. and FP.. could be wrong.. do you get to aim her?

That Kerbel QL is great.

The way those dozen Snidler stage 1 rockets start oscillating and moving around like spaghetti had me cracking up. I got my eye on this game.

Kerbal Space Program is fucking amazing and believe me, they didn't even scratch the surface of what you can do in that game. The first time you managed to get in a stable orbit around Kerbin is so incredibly satisfying. Same when you finally manage to get to the Mun and land on it.

At 15$ it's a no brainer.

It's a little more complicated then that kratos level 3 can be dodged, ive seen a few people only get 2 kills at times. Moving kratos during his lvl 3 feels heavier then normal. It's hard to explain

man that game looks great

they mentioned mod support, is there a lot of it? is it just more parts or other things? (like maybe land vehicle support, something that changes the gameplay?)

What wrestling games have finisher only matches?

They might be referring to being able to KO a win on WWE All Stars if you hit your finisher when their health was flashing, but it wasn't finisher only. Though it might as well have been because you could kick out of just about any pin

EXACTLY.

I mean, they have things like items and stage hazards, and attacks that do a crazy amount of knockback, because hey those things are in Smash, but they don't really have any point when a super is the only way you can kill or be killed.

It is mostly parts but there's a lot of actual plugins too. Like you can get "MechJeb" which is a kind of auto-pilot. You can get mappers that will scan the planet under you and map the terrain. Ton of stuff on the forums.

Well, one of reasons that those platforms are there is to help you escape from supers. Kratos' L3 and Fat Princess' L2 would be a slaughter show without those platforms. But with them you can generally escape from them as long as you're fast enough and not right next to them when they go into it.

Getting hit by stage hazards will cause you to drop AP that others can pick up and using items will allow you to cause your opponent to drop their AP that you or others can pick up. Getting hit by the rocket launcher for example can cause you to lose a lot of AP.

Man, the netcode in All Stars really does seem as smooth as butter. It's a shame that Smash won't likely come close to delivering an even decent online mode, but we'll see.

Looks like a fun game to me!

the only thing usually wrong with Nintendo's online stuff is that it's clunky to get into, but once you're actually in the game stuff works fine.

Well.

Except for Smash, but whatever went wrong with Smash's online got fixed in their later online games.

I usually don't like videos with people sucking at Kerbal Space Program, because watching people do cool stuff is much more fun (and inspiring), but that QL contained such spectacular failure that it was worth it.

KSB is such an awesome game.

Watching their monstrosities explode in spectacular failure while those stupid kerbals in the bottom right have dumbass grins is a thing of beauty.

I watched the Playstation All-Stars QL, and man, I'm trying to keep an open mind about this game, but every time I see it, it just looks so boring and uninspired as fuck. It's not even any fun to spectate
