Show us your gaming setup: 2012 Edition

Chittagong and fellow interior design enthusiasts, I've finally gotten to the point where my debts are all paid up and I'm thinking about going into debt again to buy some nice furniture, and need your help fulfilling that :)

I need the following:

- An office chair
- A replacement for my couch, but increase seating up to 5+ people (so multiple pieces)

I was personally thinking of getting the following:

Aeron Chair $800ish
design_story_aeron_work_8.jpg

I have the Aeron chair myself since December for my home office which I spend 4-8hrs a day in, and am VERY happy with my purchase:
dsc00907fb.jpg

During Herman Miller's semi-annual sale I went into the dealer looking for the Embody and after trying both out, I found both were extremely comfortable, but for my 5'10"ish 175lb frame the Aeron suited my body more.

I also did a video review of my Aeron here:

Since you have lots of experience with the Aeron, definitely go into the dealer and try the Embody for a while too (at least 30-60 mins), just for comparison :)

Anyone have recommendations for budget desks, around $50? I want to fit a monitor and a keyboard on it. I do not want any moving parts (ie drawers). I'll probably use it for a just a year.

PureSolidness! Thanks to your review, I've been rocking a pair of XB500's since mid-June. Awesome buy at $50 on Amazon. I also plan on getting the BenQ XL2420T with my first build come December.

Keep up the videos!

That isn't clutter! Those are the controllers for each system I pulled out for the picture (they are put away now). And no, that is a letter opener since my computer desk sits across from it so I put it here and it just so happened to make the picture.

Here is my wife playing SMB3 today:

Awesome. I'd love to have the space to setup a SD CRT like this for the older consoles.

Current Game room / Office setup.

For Modern stuff - EVO Monitors with 360 and PS3 and Gaming Rig. Ikea Hacked desk.

Hey glad I could help! They're honestly the best basshead headphones I've listened too, and you got a good deal for 50 man :) And since the XL2420t is an upgrade of the 2410t, which I love, you definately won't be disappointed with your purchase. And though I don't use mine for 3D, the one your getting is supposed to be alot brighter with its lightboost if you plan on using the 3D feature.

Thanks for the support man!

I was kidding about the debt thing (well not paying off but going back into). I would buy a piece once a month or if it was debt, it would be some 12 month no interest deal to pay off well before.

I'm not a huge fan of the design of the 2 you recommended. Nice thing about Aeron is it's pretty cheap authentic and I know it lasts quite a while as we use them at work. The only other chair I would be tempted to use is:

heather-john-eames-chair.jpg

It's such an amazing design, I would just be concerned with the comfortability and the durability.

One option for the couch I was thinking would be to get those 2 barcelona chairs, and a knock off barcelona couch, and then an authentic david eames lounge chair ($4k+) for comfort:

file_8_13.jpg

To be honest, I would not get Barcelona, and definitely not a non-Knoll one. It's not a comfortable chair to sit on, ours goes almost unused. It looks amazing, but is just hard and awkward, better fit to corporate use imo. However the resell value of a genuine Knoll one is great.

The Vitra Eames lounger is certainly a much better choice.

As for working chair, I really love Arper's Catifa line, they look great and are superb to sit on. Also, in case you don't require wheels, Eero Aarnio chairs are amazing too.

I'm not a big fan of Aeron, even though rationally it makes sense. I just find the design a bit complex and corporate, ,and the back is hard and always seems to feel a bit too upright for my tastes. The Eames one is much better.

I'm meith Sean on Innovation, they have beautiful, affordable, durable and comfortable stuff. In fact, my oldest peice of furniture currently (after sending my 35 year old Aalto gear back to mom for refurb) is the Innovation futon in out guestroom, and our Innovation bed.

I want an arcade cab SO bad, I got the space (That I made room for) but being in sorry-assed Delaware, I got access to jack shit when it comes to Cabs ;(

Apologies in advance if this post is gonna be absurdly long. I can shorten it if needed. Please for the love of God don't quote the entire thing.

My current set-up. Some things have changed, most noticably the retro-corner, which is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Lack of space is definitely an issue, so it's a bit cramped, but the upside is it's damn cosy being surrounded by nostalgia.

I've also very recently gotten a new TV (Samsung 46ES8000 for those interested) which is a real step up from my last one. The game on the screen at the moment is Anna btw, a pretty decent little first-person horror adventure that was just released.

The next thing I'm gonna be changing is some furniture, specifically the little table with the Link on Epona statue, those 2 Ikea looking square things and the white one with all the figures on top. Those need to be classed up.

First off, the stairs leading up to the room:

At the gates. This place is a mess, I had to move all my boxes from inside to here because of obvious lack of space, but I like to keep them in sight. Ideally if I ever get a new (BIGGER) place I want to have shelves surrounding the room near the ceiling where I'd store all my boxes and assorted junk.

Can't really compete with some of those setups.
I'm a sucker for "now playing" displays.

Retro corner is sporting an AV Famicom, a Sharp Twin Famicom, a US SNES, a modded PAL SNES w/ cloneCIC chip, a PS2, a Gamecube, a Saturn and an R7 Dreamcast on a Sony PVM 23" Monitor. Will post a picture of that later, but it's messy now. :D

Haha, very funny review dude.

The Vitra Eames lounger is certainly a much better choice.

Whats the deal with Vitra vs Herman Miller regarding the Eames lounge? There is like a $3000 difference, but it seems that they are both legitimate. Is the HM version really that much better?

Edit - hm, I guess I was looking at a fake Vitra, it looks like the price is more similar than I thought.

U know I though about editing the post out but it was so epic I wanted everyone to see it again. Its not that hard to scroll good sir.

Just a heads up, you might want to abide by thread rules or you probably won't be around for that long. Rules are rules ya know.

And use complete spelling when posting, I don't think abbreviating words like 'You' to 'U' is allowed either.

There's 2 company's who have an official license to produce Eames furniture, Herman Miller in the US and Vitra in Europa. Prices are pretty much comparable, don't think there's much of a quality difference either.

Everyone ignores my advice here, you tell em' Chitta!

Got my new Panny PT-AR100U projector in last week, just in time for Darksiders 2. The sucker is so bright, I can have the windows open and all the lights on. Really cool.

Since you guys seem to know a lot about office chairs, what's my best bet for ~$200? I'm a poor college student. D:

EDIT: And hours of research are just making it more apparent that $200 will not get me a good chair. Why is it so expensive to be comfortable?

That looks absolutely amazing, and the room looks quite nice as well.

Thanks! Definitely the favorite room in the house. While the wife doesn't game, she shares my love of football, so building a family room around a projector was a shared goal. On the wall behind the couch we have the entertainment center with the consoles, receiver, etc. Makes for a clean look.

I wanna do this when I have a place and the money. I just want to make sure I get a reliable projector. Would probably use it sparingly as more of a movie thing unless replacement bulbs are easy to obtain and cheap. -sigh- I'm just looking into the future. lol

Can you please take a picture with lights off / curtains closed / at night? I want to see the full effect of this setup. Thanks!

Sure! I know I'll be playing a bit tonight so I'll post then.

Can I come over?

With a name like dehydratedbabies, why wouldn't I have you in my house? :)

A few items of encouragement:

Getting a projector in this day and age is not bad. 6 years ago, when I picked up my first one, it ran me $1600 for a native 720p. Now, you can get a decent 1080p for under a grand. I know, not exactly cheap, but a lot more affordable than people realize. My current Panny is going for $1299, but if I had bothered to looked in March I could have got in on a $300 rebate...ah well.

Once you get past the projector, the rest is reasonable. I built the screen with a friend for under $100. We even used acoustically transparent material so I could put the speakers behind it. Easy stuff.

We use the projector for everything. The original plan was for movies, sports and gaming only, but once you see Jon Stewart on an 11 foot screen you just can't go back. As for bulbs, most are guaranteed for at least 4,000 hours, however you should be able to squeeze more than that out of them if you run in eco mode.

Bottom line? Yeeeaah...not cheap, but not 1% outrageous either. Totally worth saving up for!

Very nice! How far back are you from the screen? And how big is it?

I need to get myself into gear to finish the basement so that I can FINALLY set up my projector.

You will see a darkened room with barely illuminated surfaces giving you a terrible impression of scale against the only other feature - a brightly lit screen.

Really... the effect of a large projector screen (or a large field of view irrespective of device used) isn't something that can be properly captured with a camera.

Ya, I tried to capture my 244" behemoth and it just looked horrible.

This is good stuff to know. Yeah I was gonna say "seems like most places seem to offer a free screen when you buy projectors" but yours sounds special. lol

4,000 hours isn't bad I guess. Lemme see...that's actually 166 days worth IF you left it on 24 hours a day. And there's no way you'd be doing that. At 8 hours a day it'd probably last a year and a half. I guess that's not bad really as long as the projector itself doesn't go boom. lol.

Thanks! The screen is about 12 feet from the couch and the projector itself is another 8 feet back. Not horrible, but 20 feet is a bit far. I'm sure I'm losing some quality, but I'm cool with it. I ended up building an 11 foot screen for it. Fits great in the room!

I was originally thinking basement/man cave, but the wife uses the projector as much as I do. It became our regular television.

Hi5 for projector setups!

Here's my area/setup, I finished one half of my basement last year and have been continuously updating things here and there, I'm sure it'll look different in a few months but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

Epson 8350 1080p, 120" screen. 5.2 surround sound through Pioneer receiver and Jamo speakers. It's more a living area than a "home theater", eventually I'd like to scrap the office nook and fill that with 2-4 stand up arcade games or a bar, I still have another section of the basement to finish though that I might use for something like that.

I'll second what CousinLump said though, it's not that expensive nowadays to set up a projector/screen combo and you'll never go back. I have friends who've paid 2500 bucks for a TV and come over and kicked themselves when they see this thing on.
