Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

We can try and see how we can combine our builds to compliment a solid team.

Hey, I'm sure me and Easy are going to be doing a fuckload of sPVP once things get rolling and I get over my wanderlust (so like a month from release or something). Here's the build I'll probably be running on my Engineer for both heavy condition damage and team condition removal, with the assumption that I'll have Easy on Elementalist for regular fire fields:

I expect the metagame to be extremely offense heavy out of the gate, both glass cannon direct damage builds and condition damage w/ utility builds. I feel like it accounts for most of the dangers of those two archetypes fairly well for a support build that still has good damage.

I really like how you're focusing on burning as I am. Will really help with traits that compliment it with duration/damage.

I actually sacrificed a significant chunk of Burning dropping the Flamethrower for Elixir Gun, but I still think it's a good investment because I still have my own source on top of fields coming from Easy. In a 1v1 it's going to be more about Poison and Bleed, with Burning just kind of being a bonus source since I have no controllable Burning sources. I'd run Pistol OH but I think it makes the build too weak in terms of control, especially in stopping a friendly stomp (I'd pretty much only have elite stun which doesn't cut it).

I will do everything in my power to be there. In this case, I'm at a party at a friends house. I'll be borrowing his computer tomorrow while more than likely nursing a hangover. I am truly an addict.

Cool. As long as I can get the odd hour to mess about as a Mesmer, then I'm all good. :D

Mesmer is AWESOME. I forgot that you could have two weapon sets with them...

The skill "The Prestige" is so much fun it barely seems fair.

Another stress test in the coming week is very likely, but not guaranteed.

Also: You guys are the biggest crackwhores.

GIMME MOAR

They are restricting the time so tight that they hope everyone in north america that has access is going to pound the login screen at 11:59.

Would make sense that that's the reasoning behind it, but for that to be more effective they should've announced it earlier :P but yeah, pretty sure that's what they're hoping for, to get a sense of what release day will be like.

I'm not particularly interested in playing for an hour, but I will login just so they can prepare for launch. Everything to make launch the best.

This is a good idea by the way. If you have the ability to log in for that hour, just idle and let your server slot be taken up. Can't hurt for them to have the info.

That's pretty much the reason why it's one hour on a weekend. The more people they can cram on the servers, the better it will be come launch.

Has the Thief's survivability been buffed a bit at all for PVE during each stress test? (not really interested in PVP) After trying out the warrior last time I found it a bit boring, I think I'll now go with a Ranger of Thief.

How do you deal with the relative lack of buttons, btw? Gamepad + keyboard?

I can see the general controls being enjoyable with my 360pad, but not sure how I'd deal with all the skills/etc.

You might want to have a look at this:

And this:

By the way, my next project is a program to let you easily create playlists for the music replacement function of Guild Wars 2. The idea would be to allow you to select from several soundtrack folders (clicking checkboxes next to each), which each would have to have subfolders for each of the music ambiences (I'll explain it better if I release it to the public). That way, you could, say, select "I want to hear Chrono Cross and Xenoblade music today" with a couple of clicks.

It's actually mostly done for my purposes (in Java; perhaps should have used C++ but I don't have Qt framework installed here and didn't feel like doing it right now). By which I mean that stuff is hardcoded to where I have my folders and such. Would there be demand for such a program in general?

I agree. You should get a double box up to click or two separate binds - one to revive and one for general interaction.

I actually like it's the same binding, but I'm biased as I use a controller and it feels more natural that way.

[...]Pardon the length of my spiel, but it's something that occurred to me and I couldn't help but marvel.

It's very appreciated actually. This is one of the reasons I'm having such a hard time "selling" this game to friends; most of the decisions make no particular sense or are unremarkable taken in a vacuum, or, worse yet, applied to a preexisting framework such as that of WoW. It's only taking them together and thinking about their interactions that you begin seeing it as a whole and why each one enhances the rest in such subtle ways.

To add to all you said, the recent change about allowing players to access their banks from trading stations reduce the need for travelling back to the cities even more, if you manage to find one in the town you're in. The ironic thing is that city-visiting is such a minor investment in GW2 compared to games like WoW!

Man, I'm so excited for this game... However, I still can't shake my skepticism about this game actually being as amazing as the four or so hours I've put into it indicate. Chalk it up to being utterly disappointed in every other MMO post-WoW, I suppose. Does anyone else feel similarly?

I don't, but then again I've probably spent upwards to 30-40 hours in the game and, if anything, it gets better. In fact my problem currently is that I find it hard to decide what I want to do, even in betas. Five characters x PvP, PvE, WvW + multiple directions of exploration in each (not counting "mini"games like Keg Brawl)... game of the forever indeed.

Just put this together, it is the setup I use - pretty sure other people are using something different but this is absolutely smooth for me.

Perfect for Couch Potato Computing!

Isn't having to let go of the left analog stick for using utility skills a bit awkward, though?

Didn't know you used mine, Piecake! That's awesome! :)

Yep that's my dream game. An empty world... nothing in it. People create civilizations from the ground up.

Isn't that pretty much Second Life? The more freedom given to players in an online game, the less directorial control and therefore the uglier it gets.

Pigeons bring your mail to you in GW2.

The sound of bullet casings hitting the floor is different depending on the floor's surface. Wow.

I'm having trouble deciding on a profession and wanted to ask about traits, unless gafguild.com is a better place to do so.

Basically, do we have any idea just how much the trait line stat bonuses will make a difference? A durable thief focusing on Shadow Arts and Acrobatics (with some of the power line) sounds very appealing but with no "heal ally" skills the compassion stat seems a bit wasted, unless it's on self heals.

There's also this:

And these two Shadow Arts traits:

If you're not taking any of those traits, however, then Thief is probably one of the classes that benefits less from +healing indeed.

Still not sure about civil clothes. I loved how Lotro did it (yeah, I kinda always refer to that game :/ ) and I'm not really digging the GW2 way.

a) Civil clothes can't (or shouldn't) be equipped outside of cities. Makes the whole "bragging"/styling part pretty much obsolete, 'cause no one will ever notice what I'm wearing.

b) Civil clothing seems not to be craftable, just buyable from the item store. That's.. dunno. I don't see a lot of reasons to buy it, together with point a)

c) there's sooo much opportunity for awesome racial civil clothing, and all the shop got was a pirate and chef outfit. Wat. I know, they will probably go all out with this after launch, but still.

I had a d), but forgot it :(

edit oh right: d) Civil clothing appearantly can't be used for transmorphing. Another point of having it in wasted. Really, I don't see any incentive to spend cash for this, and usually I'm a huge sucker for these kinds of things.

If you played as a Sylvari, the chef outfit was a Sylvari version. Was pretty cool.

I forget what it's called, (Not Second Life), but there is this game that's out now and EVERYTHING in it is player generated. they started out with blank land and planted trees, built houses, etc. Seemed cool, but when I played it, it was still way early.

Ah! found it.

Wurm Online.
