Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Why do MEN play as female characters in MMO?

Because
a) I love dem curves on them
b) I have no problems identifying with a female in a story, that is a very basic toolset that is needed in order to enjoy all stories. I would have hated whole books of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time saga without it :P
c) I get nothing out of watching a men do stuff onscreen, if I have the option of watching an animated, good-looking woman do the same. :D

I am contemplating whether to make a norn or an elf guardian.

It's really bad, broken and useless at the moment.
You should not pick it at all.

Lol, you want to be the only Thief don't you? You shouldn't say stuff like that to him because he's not a regular here and won't know that you're not serious.

Men who play male characters are insecure about their sexuality... now I've heard it all.

Nobody has ever said that in this thread.
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affirming_the_consequent
with P = "playing female" and Q = "being sexually secure".

The fallacy is perhaps more easily seen here as:
if P then Q
not P
therefore not Q [this is a fallacy]

This is a common confusion from modus tollens, which is a valid argumentation:
if P then Q
not Q
therefore not P

It's really bad, broken and useless at the moment.
You should not pick it at all.

I like your style. :)

They're not like thieves/rogues in other MMOs. They weave in and out of combat, not go toe to toe like WoW's Rogues.

I'll just leave this here... *vanishes in a cloud of smoke*

I can't really say since nobody has reached level cap.

Something like Skrittsburgh requires more than one group to handle, as the invasions can come from different directions. Something like that increased to greater lengths would require multi-group coordination.

I have certainly gotten my ass kicked by DEs, but we haven't seen past level 30 content. Unless you count the Gamescom Dragon demos.

Bunch of leaked patch notes from the internal beta:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/y3y1n/patch_notes/

Several of these are actually in right now, like the skill tooltips.

Also, it seems you were right regarding the gold sending limit, it's determined by the amount you've earned, not what the receiver has earned. It's also only enforced for one month after the account's creation. I guess the idea is to combat account hijacking, then sending all the gold in it to an intermediary account. I hope this, along with the official way to buy gold, will help against such practices.

That mantra change for Mesmer seems so pointless. Mantra of Recovery for example had it's effect nerfed by 50%. So you basically need two button presses to do what one took before, after the initial charge.

The elite events are nerfed for the demos since for most people that was their first time with the game.

Going by what we have seen though the gloves come off at around 25 or so.

Defiant:
Defiant is the "Control boon*" that many champions have, as you can see in the image below, defiant grants indignant when hit by control effects. It also has the passive effect of reducing the duration of blind by 90% and lowers the duration on weakness and vulnerability by 50%. So in short when you use any control effects on this target it will gain a set amount of Indignant this can be more then one at a time.

*Defiant cannot be removed by any means, including such skills as the Necromancers Spinal shivers or traits like searing flames from the Guardian.

Defiant.png

Indignant:
again look at the picture below, indignant causes the target to become immune to all control effects, however using a control effect on the target will remove one indignant boon, but only one not the entire stack like it would if you where removing a condition from your self. As you can see next to the Indignant picture it has two stacks of it, meaning you will need to use two CC effects to remove it to allow you to land a control effect.

So I skimmed through that huge post made by Jira and it was very interesting :-) I do have a couple of questions though (that I might have missed since I didn't read all of it, sorry):

1 - So in the arena type PvP everyone's items and talents are brought down to a common level, right? What about WvWvW? Is that the place where having the best gear actually means something? I mean sure it's a huge battleground so individual people won't even leave a mark no matter how geared they are, but is that the place where to show off your "epics" and gear up your guildies for?
2 - Do the WvWvW battles last for full two weeks or are they over when someone "won" and then you just wait for the reset?
3 - In WvWvW can a single soloing dude playing alone do something for the good of the server? I don't mean like a hermit, but if it's in the middle of the night and not many people are on can I just fool around and gather supplies etc.
4 - Will the real-money stuff be available to buy day 1? Have they said anything about what we can buy?
5 - Are there daily... erm... motivations (quests in WoW) or is end-game just PvP and dungeons? Like I mean is there something related to daily quests or rep farming etc?
6 - Anyone know how awesome crafting will be? Like will I be able to actually craft awesome gear or is it just junk once I start getting PvP gear? Any craftables related to WvWvW like keep upgrades etc?
7 - No mounts, I guess?
8 - Once I complete a race's "starting area", can I hop on to other race's areas and do events and challenges there? How do I do that? Just run there?
9 - Are there any guild tabards, capes etc?
10 - Are there any tweaks or changes people have done to their .ini files or similar stuff? Like in WoW you could change the view distance a little further from there...

Nobody has ever said that in this thread.

It can be an implication. I gave them the benefit of the doubt with their responses because we're all bros here and because I don't think anyone is so obtuse as to make that claim.

1) Everyone is brought up to the level cap and given access to all skills and trait points in sPVP. WvW is more uneven, but everyone is still brought up to the level cap. Difference being that you have the same skills, traits and armor from your PVE campaign.

2) The server matchups will be two week affairs after an initial period of matchmaking and data collection to ensure the correct servers play each other in relation to skill/ability/size. When that settles, week long bouts will be the norm.

3) There are soloable enemies, supply rams, and hidden puzzles that give your server points. That's not all the soloable content in WvW, either. This mode is designed to make sure everyone can contribute to the cause at any time at any strength.

4) There is a gem shop which handles all real money transactions.

5) There will be titles to gain, daily achievements that give exp and other rewards, and dynamic events will be swapped in and out. Odds are good that every time you log in you'll find something new.

6) Crafting so far is pretty awesome.

7) No mounts.

8) You go to the hub zone called Lion's Arch, which connects directly to every single starter zone and is available right after you complete the tutorial/starter quest. It's pretty, too.

Gimme a sec, check back for an edit.

Planning out some characters I guess. Have any differences been found between bags boxes and the other type for inventory? I am looking at crafting options to spread across characters.

Oh I knew several of those.

I may be guilty of it myself, but it was just a RPPVP server so I mean you know I didn't actually ever RP as a girl.

that game has a lotta icons

After GW2, that WoW skill bar is absolutely hilarious. the entire damn screen is taken up!

Personally, i dont roleplay, and see my characters as separate, so i have no problem with picking a female character. I simply go with whatever gender looks the best to me

I've heard people say that you don't play WoW, you play its interface. I used to think that was simply being unnecessarily hostile towards the game, but holy god, that's hideous.

At the Cataclysm levels my Warrior tank had two full bars (totaling 24) and a few extra skills that were all required to tank. I could not take even a single skill away or I would fuck up some encounter or pack of mobs somewhere. It was really annoying although it helped that I was decent at binding keys to my will (hehe ;-)

8- You can and should do that at level 1 if you feel like it. It's a blast.
9. No tabards or capes; instead, you can put the guild insignia on your actual armor and weapons :)
10. Haha... you should see the file structure for this game. Nah, there's nothing to tweak from outside the game options.

The WoW shaman screen shot got me a bit nostalgic to check out my old WoW guild. My character went bye bye (quit during Lich), but quite a few people I knew are still playing and the guild seems to be doing decently, though a bit worse than before. Kinda crazy to think about

Actually, there probably will be capes. Capes have been seen in the game on NPCs and they are very well-animated, so it would be silly not to apply them towards players as well.

If capes provide statistical bonuses, i hope they can be hidden. I honestly dont picture my asura engineer wearing a cape. That just sounds weird

Hahaha almost straight out of my old guild. We had two leaders, both guys, but one was a female Night Elf. The amount of times that he would get whispers of affection were priceless when you told them OOC that it was a guy.

He tried to RP her decently in the mold of the stereotypical female warrior, but compared to some of our females officers he was quite tame.

I see that this has already been answered, but since I already typed this up I'm going to just post it anyway.

1. In Structured PVP, everyone is level 80, and has access to all all skills their class can use, all weapons, and the ability to obtain the best stat equipment in whatever spec you choose at no cost. All rewards in PVP are purely cosmetic. In WvW everyone is leveled up to 80, but you retain your existing gear, and only have access to skills you have alread unlocked through leveling (though you can level up in WvW and unlock stuff that way). So gear does matter, but not that much. Legendary gear has the same stats as all of the rest of the max level gear, so there is not really any advantage of obtaining it other than looking cool. "Gearing up" for WvW will not be a big task, and will not require dozens or hundreds of hours of grinding.

2. WvW battles do in fact last for 2 weeks. You get increasing rewards as you take over more territory, so there is an incentive to keep playing even when you take the lead (aside from just maintaining your lead of course), and similarly even if you are losing, there are benefits to losing by less. I suppose if you take every single point, there is not much point in continuing to play, but if you stopped defending them, somone would steal them back. In the first few weeks the matches will only last for about a day each, in order to help the matchmaking system get more data early on and get more accurate matchups.

3. Its hard to get much done with just a single person, simply because there are some tough NPCs defending all of the capturable points, even the supply camps. A group of 5 can accomplish a lot though. If you are just trying to jump in and play without finding people to play with, it is usually easy to locate a battle and join in. Just try not to get into the lemming mentality and follow a huge zerg in a death march.

4. We have already seen basically what will be in the cash shop, and its mostly innocuous. Some costumes, exp boosts (which are really not very effective, and will definitely not be something you will feel obligated to buy), minipets. Nothing in there that really gives you any kind of advantage.

5. There are daily achievements, that will grant you some exp and cash rewards for doing basic things like killing enemies, doing events, and gathering. Its definitely worth it to try and get them if you have time, but they are generic enough that you can obtain them doing basically whatever you were going to do anyway.

6. Explaining the crafting system would take an entire post and then some, but basically you can craft the best gear in the game stat-wise if you so choose. This game is not really loot dependent at all, but crafting is a good way to get gear with the exact stats you want without having to buy them on the trading post. To my knowledge you can't craft any WvW specific items.

7. Nope. If mounts are ever added, they will do them in a way that doesn't exist just to speed through content (possibly a jousting mini game?). Flying mounts will never exist.

8. Yes you can. All of the major cities are linked through Asura gates (teleporters) to the hub city Lions Arch. It is fairly simple to warp to another race's starting zone as soon as you complete the tutorial mission (first 10 minutes of the game). This is a good way to get exp if you need to level up (although I personally never had trouble with this).

9. None at the moment, but I believe you can still have your guild emblem show up on armor.

10. No idea.

Shaman life yo =(

ANet would shrink Shaman abilities by like 70% and manage to retain all functionality.
Speaking of Shaman... anyone notice when dual wielding axes on a warrior - #4 which is your dual strike has a tiny electrical sound... much like Enh Shaman's Stormstrike... which is a dual strike. Same type of attack - same sound ;)

They just need some facial hair options that aren't thin, douche-baggy lines of scruff. My goatee is thick and manly, not a couple wispy hairs clinging to my upper lip. Almost all of the human male options are like, middle school face-pubes.

Perfect comment for the top of a new page. 12 days, 10 hours, 38 minutes!

That pisses me off too. I couldn't find a decent goatee at all to match my real one.
