Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

All these "internet celebrities" it's actually quite hilarious ^^

Sometimes I think "Man, maybe I should make a video too!" but then I remember that everything I could show is/was already being shown by 100 other people who are way less lazy than me and will put huge amounts of time and effort into being "the next big thing".

total biscuit's series of videos are very enjoyable. Someone might want to post a link for me, don't feel like digging them up.

Here's all of TB's stuff

http://www.youtube.com/show?p=VB1pLPfcJI0&tab=videos

Though if I'm entirely honest, someone going in blind just watching videos doesn't really explain a whole lot about how the game works and the systems underneath it. There's many things big and small that the game does that no video can really layout for people in one go.

So new guy, if you watch some videos I highly suggest you then read my thread:

If that's what you're looking for sure. However if you really want to know more about a game they're horrible to watch/listen to.

The reason I watch Giant Bomb's quick looks is because I can learn more about a game by watching someone play it for 15 minutes than I can reading a 1000 word review. Same thing here, I'd rather watch someone play a game and have fun than listen to someone ramble on about fiddly details (woodenpotatoes.)

But I think Yogscast Minecraft videos are boring and generally shit. :p

I've kept track of the map files and I'm pretty sure the HoM area was just added in last nights patch. If it were there previously then people wouldn't still be wondering how we were going to get our HoM items.
All I'm saying is this map has been around since May and has the EotN location on it (look north of Raven's Point). It's not properly positioned, but the look of it is clearly the Eye and the surrounding ICC area. I will say that the EotN structure itself looks more clearly defined in your map, so there have been changes for sure.

Is it wrong to say the major focus by ArenaNet when it come sto GW2 is going to be the PvP? Does anyone think a purely non-PvP (I'm not that but the sake of the question lets go with this) would be happy with the game based on the PvE content you've played? Was never in the beta and only have my experiences with GW1 which was boring after a while even with the new expansions as it was just a constant dungeon/area crawl, one after another.

THe focus of GW2 seems to be PVE first, WvWvW a close second and sPVP third. If you compare features and scope, PVE gets way more attention than the rest. sPVP is like three maps and one mode.

I don't think a small number of maps means a lack of focus, if anything it helps them focus on the most important part of sPvP first - balance. I mean, think about it, how many MOBA maps are there really? Now, this isn't a MOBA PVP game, but they want it to be on par with games like that, competition-wise, so it's all about balance.

Quality > Quantity for PvP. If you add a ton of maps, players will just decide on the ones they like best and only ever play those. If you measure "focus" by amount of content then PvE will always win, because PvE players demand a huge amount of content in comparison.

Balance isn't just a sPVP thing. They need balance for the whole game. Everything about sPVP is a bit rougher than the rest, and they do have a fourth map that doesn't seem to be finished yet. Though I think it's not in yet because they're still balancing and refining water combat.

I've already started to tire of the sPVP maps. The combat keeps it fresh for now, but they really need another mode or something that fresens up the experience.

Yup, very true. But his enthusiasm in a lot of the videos is a bit infectious. I've gotten a number of people interested in the game that had no idea what is was about, because of that.

Isn't having to let go of the left analog stick for using utility skills a bit awkward, though?

So I spent the latest stress test trying out a couple of different controller configs including one of yours I found via GafGuild.com , just to see if any of them feel more fluid than my current setup.

Maybe I'm too comfortable with my current config but I just can not use anything but a right bumper for left mouse-clicking. Something about it just feels natural, and scrolling through the mini map was such a pain when assigned to sticks. As result, gonna stick with my current setup. Also tried adding another shift button, to keep all skills to the face buttons. That didn't end well

How many hours did you guys spend getting your GW1 -> GW2 items? Is it going to end when GW2 launches or can people farm for that stuff even at later time?

FYI, as far as rig and performance go, I am on a:

Phenom II x4 @3ghz
4gb ram
GTX560 SC

And on the current stress tests I'm getting 40-70fps in just about all areas with graphics set to max. It bounces around a lot still, and is inconsistent. Sometimes the same area would be on the low end, sometimes towards the high end. It virtually never dipped below 40fps.

If there's even a little optimization left to go, I would image it will be possible to hit 60fps on mid-range systems without having to turn off every single thing that makes the game look good.

I just wanted to chime in and mention that on my rig (same cpu, but 8gigs ddr3 and on a GTX570) I was getting was worse than that on max settings. Like, almost unplayable at times.

So yeah, some weird consistency issues going on with it. But that was in the beta weekend event, not the stress tests. So if it improved that much, I'll be a happy man.

Isn't that the engine that's currently bugged and makes half the world disappear when you move your camera around ;)

Yes because that totally happens in GW2 *rollseyes*

It's taken me 100 hours to get to 20/30 and I'm guessing it will take another 100 hours to get to 30. From here I need to finish EoTN/Prophecies and NF.

Yeah it's totally weird. FYI, as a test I tried parking it in various areas and adjusting the settings to watch the FPS counter. Crazy: sometimes, in an area with nothing going on, turning everything down would make the framerate jump up. In other areas, with lots going on, turning everything down would not cause a single frame's worth of increase.

It does. You don't know? It totally does.
There are tons of bug reports about it and I myself experienced it countless times.
Like, seriously, please educate yourself before going all "*roll eyes*" on me.

It happens in Metrica Province more than anywhere else. The occluder is essentially going apeshit and making the engine think it can't see something when it should.

It got really bad around major contested areas with the WvWvW, then at random moments, a completely chill area would take a crowbar to my pc. Super weird. Hopefully things clear up around launch.

I know, but it can happen anywhere.

I was just pointing out to Mr Roll Eyes that he should maybe keep his snark in for another day when all I did was make an innocent jab at a guy posting his technology which is currently bugging out :)

O.O It was smooth as hell for me. That sucks.

It's not about smoothness. It doesn't impact performance. It turns things invisible. Things you are currently looking at.

Like Jira said, Metrica Province for example had it happen constantly if you moved your cam around a lot.

When I said it was smooth I was implying I did not experience this problem at all. Is there a good video showing this issue?

I was all ready to grind items in GW for GW2 but then I realized the best part is seeing how new gear looks on you.

Unlike TOR's yellow lightsaber these skins are good throughout the entire game rather then 1-10 some of the weapons look pretty badass. Icebreaker looks kind of like the hammer of the Naaru and the Prince Rurik's sword will also be great. There's also cool minipets and the like. :D

AMD X3 720@3.4GHZ
8GB DDR3
Samsung 830 256GB SSD
Radeon 6870 2GB
1920x1080

Everything to Max except Shadow/Reflection set to Medium.

~45FPS

Nvidia is currently working on some drivers for GW2.

Fermi based cards (mainly 560 TI/570) can see a 5-45% increase, but not necessarily on min FPS only.

Kepler based cards (670/680) can see 20-70%, but more on the minimum side which will increase averages.

I think it'll be out on the 15th.

Its a good thing they let players start playing Asura/Sylvari in BWE 3. Would have sucked (will suck?) if they don't fix it asap. It frustrated the hell out of me the past couple stress tests.

I went from 40fps on LOWEST settings BWE3 to blowing past 60 on max settings in the stress tests.

It's middleware; totally unrelated to the game engine (or any particular game engine). For those who don't know, Umbra is a technology which facilitates frustrum and occlusion culling. Essentially, what this does is tell the engine only to render the things the user can see on screen at any time, so as to increase performance.

Frustrum culling is the exclusion of anything not in the camera field of view the player is viewing. Occlusion culling (a bit more revolutionary) is the exclusion of anything in the camera field of view that is being blocked (occluded) by geometry in front of it. Thus if you're looking at a building which has a tree behind it that you can't see, the tree is actually not being rendered at all (until you go around the building and can look at it). When this works right it provides a huge boost in performance and absolutely no visual sacrifice.

When it doesn't work it makes the entire world disappear for no reason in Metrica Province.

That's actually very interesting, more so since it's such an intuitive idea. I even remember thinking about that when I took computer graphics subjects in college, and that was back in the mid-nineties! For context on how much things have changed since then, Z-buffering (a cornerstone of current graphic representation, eliminating polygon flickering) was being taught as a rendering method only used in Silicon Graphics workstations and stuff; it was me who told the teacher that a then-upcoming console (the N64) was going to use it.

I've never done any graphics stuff after college, but if I'm not wrong, frustrum culling is quite common; indeed, it's occlusion culling, intuitive as it seems, what seems to be new (since it involves much more complex calculations).

You know, how the game suddenly can only show a maximum amount of player models in your area and just refuses to render everyone else. That wasn't there in BWE 1 and 2.

That actually didn't happen to me, perhaps it's video-card based? Or perhaps I simply never saw that many players on-screen.

I don't remember the dead sister thing being that interesting. I hardly remember it, though.

The "biggest regret" question determines the personal story after the "I was raised" part ends, about level 15. So if you never finished the first part, you probably didn't see anything related to that question.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW why'd you saaaaaaaaaaaaay that????

(you just read it in that guy's voice)

Was going to post just that. >_> Seriously, accuracy be damned, it's that one guy's voice why I hate them so much.

I'm very much considering changing my mouse button setup, actually; I'm not entirely satisfied with it yet as well. I'll keep you all informed.

As result, gonna stick with my current setup. Also tried adding another shift button, to keep all skills to the face buttons. That didn't end well

Yes, it ends up being confusing, and XPadder doesn't like it at all when you hold both.

O.O It was smooth as hell for me. That sucks.

If you didn't play the latest two stress event, or you didn't play in Metrica province, then you probably didn't have a chance to see it. Otherwise, it was all around the place in Metrica, although it did happen on occasion outside it (but much less often).

Its a good thing they let players start playing Asura/Sylvari in BWE 3. Would have sucked (will suck?) if they don't fix it asap. It frustrated the hell out of me the past couple stress tests.

Remember they have their own, separate ongoing closed beta; there's next to no chance of them not noticing even without the stress tests. This is pretty much obviously a result of the huge optimization done before the stress tests; as occlusion was precisely the bottleneck, they probably messed around with it, and managed to improve performance substantially but break Metrica. I'd hate for the game to launch like that, but I'm sure they can fix it within days.

Preorder the game allows you to play 3 games prior to launch? Are they going to allow users to download the game a week earlier atleast? Thing is, I want to get a physical copy, and don't know if Gamestop will do the 3 days earlier access.

Makes sense. I had only gotten to something like 12-14

Awesome. Really hoping I can get a consistent 60 FPS now.

Pre-purchased mine through Gamestop and I have 3-day early access.
