Fighting Games Weekly | August 13-19

People play what they want to play. Not because "pro's" are playing it. I love watching high level Marvel and SFIV but I'm terrible at both games.

I don't really care if the FGC rejects P4A because of it's mash AAAAAA combo strings and unblockables. I'll still play it because it's fun.
I try to do this as much as i can, figuring out combos and trying out all the modes, but its like Gutabo said, you do end up playing what everyone else is playing because sometimes you just can't find anyone to verse in obscure game X Y or Z.

GGPO is pretty awesome.

Like who? From the original 12 I'm only seeing Dhalsim and Zangief as possibles...

E. Honda: Japanese sumo wrestler
Balrog: Mike Tyson
Chun-Li: Chinese dragon lady
Guile: US military
Sagat: Thai kickboxer
Ryu: Japanese karate master

Yeah Racial Stereotypes is jackpot character design for sure :lol

It worked really well though. Once Capcom went away from that in SF3 and SF4, the cast really fell apart. Not to mention the weakest designs of SF2 were the non-stereotypes. eg. Blanka (fucking mutant pokemon) and Vega (Spanish ninja bringing claws to a fist fight).

I'm actually going to backpedal and say Dhalsim is the only racially motivated character from the original 12. US military and Mike Tyson definitely aren't races. Honda is a sumo wrestler in the only country known for the sport. Plus there are many other Asian characters that aren't sumo wrestlers so it's hardly enforcing a racial stereotype.

Really only a few characters can be deemed racial stereotypes to the point of being offensive.

Blanka is one of the most memorable characters when you bring in his moveset which is part of the design.

Angry Vietnam vet and classless black boxer don't seem like stereotypes to you?

I wish there was a stereotypical ninja in SF, like Kage.

Only if he uses to coastal karate. I want to see some of that Chinese/Japanese hybrid style. Oh and have Abel drop his judo for French kickboxing.

I'd say Street Fighter hit it's creative zenith after SFII. Most of the cast from the SFIII series are memorable and more creative than inserting a stereotypical occupation into some character.

It's a lot more fun when things get more imaginative. Blanka is sort of imaginative, but really wtf at the same time.

idk, when I first saw Balrog, I thought of Mike Tyson, not boxers in general.

When I first saw Dudley, I thought of old school boxers in general, not anybody in particular.

Mike Tyson should go to capcom HQ and punch somebody! Great reality tv. somebody should play SF/Balrog in front of him to get his reaction on camera.

Eh, I would say the SFIII notable characters are more creative but nowhere near as memorable considering how huge SFII was.

SFII nostalgia and it's impact is partially the reason why I put SF characters so high in terms of character design. Yeah it's stereotypical, but it works, and that's kind of part of the charm.

My favourite SF character is Sakura, and I wouldn't call her creative really, but there's considerable charm there.

Being a Vietnam vet, which I didn't even know until now, hardly had more to do with him standing the test of time than "sonic boom" and "flash kick".

Sounds like you're a little racist if that's what you think of Rog. I see him as the fictional version of legendary boxer Mike Tyson.

Cause he is. (Japanese name: M. Bison. They swapped the names around to try and duck legal action in the US.)

Balrog is 1000000% Mike Tyson.

His name was original name was Mike Bison, and he just happened to be a short undersized boxer with a the punching power to knock you the fuck out.

Yea okay... Capcom who you think you were fooling?

Oh and he loves women and gambling...

Capcom didn't think they were fooling anyone.

Their intent with most of their designs is pretty explicit as homages to great fighters and arts.

Guys, I know where his name came from lol. Part of my point... they put Mike Tyson into the game, not just a fictional stereotype.

Balrog is US style boxer grabs his opponent and proceeds to headbutt them. How is that not classless? Like it could have been worse and he could gone for earbiting, but Rog is no way Dudley.

Mike Bison is undersized? He's suppose to be 6'5 and his size in the actual game shows it as he towers over smaller fighters like Ryu even in the original SF2.

But that doesn't really explain how SF2 Vega(claw) is as tall as Sagat, especially during his win pose despite him being 6'1

Geki, yo.

So GAF,
according to the Monster Hunter thread
Capcom is announcing a new game at their conference at Gamescom in 8 hours? DARKSTALKERS MEHBEH? I figured since others are expecting their game to be announced this time around, it's a perfect time for them to get screwed over and Darkstalkers to finally get announced.

Whatcha think?

Yea I never got that either. He's listed at 6'5 but they always made him undersized. I understand he has the peek-a-boo stance but damn.

highly unlikely. If anything it would be at TGS for DS considering how big DS is in japan compared to the rest of the world.

The last time a "new game" was being announced, it was JoJo's. I believe in nothing until I SEE IT.

It's going to be Street Fighter IV: "Oh wait, we released this already? And people have been playing it for 4 years now? Fuck it released again!" edition with screenshots including Daigo vs. Poongko at EVO 2011.

Let's not go through this again.
