I was relating an actual incident in which a friend of mine randomly began a statement about religious people, and I challenged him on it and he stopped talking.
The Finnish word for Jesus is really funny, by the way.
Many many times have I heard people say I, or someone else, will burn in hell for whatever reason.
I've found, to great success, that not telling people you're religious or political views prevents many problems.
I remember one Christmas my sister purchased a book called "1000 Films You Must See Before You Die" for a cousin and her husband. Anyway, the husband saw the gift-wrapped book and asked if that was for him, and my sister says, "Yeah, it's a really good book."
His face fell quite visibly. "I hope it's not a Bible," he says. I say, "No, why?" He says, "I'm an atheist."
Another nugget of experience I have with atheists in public. We live in California, too. So it's not like this guy spends his days beating away bible thumpers.
