3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Man, I'm glad I just swapped my 2G SD card from my OG to the XL. My transfer went extremely well. That's a shame that some people are having issues when they decided to move stuff from one card to the other. For now I'm just going to hold onto my 4G card and do a PC transfer when I need to. I honestly don't see myself requiring that much space in the near future. I'm certainly not going digital wit this thing!.

Anyone, everything copied over. All ambassador titles, DSiware games, 3DS e-shop titles, my activity log, coins, and the save files for everything are all in tact. I picked up my pre-order for New Super Mario Bros. 2 and with my left over credit from the upgrade I bought Kingdom Hearts: DDD & Theatrythem. Pretty happy about everything!

I'm still having hand-cramping problems with the XL. Not as bad as the original 3DS, but still there, and it's very disappointing.

Dpad particularly, it's so close to the left and bottom that it's difficult to hold comfortably. Plus I keep knocking the volume control up.

But it's still better than the original 3DS, with it's little plastic daggers digging into your flesh

The fuck kind of comment is this? Get out of here.

Why are you upset? He's talking about low PPI and low quality screens. It's pretty common knowledge with Nintendo handhelds in general so I asked him what he was expecting. I'm not hating on your favorite company, so relax.

got this at gamestop this morning, i was totally unprepared for the size of this thing. I know its called an XL but since id never even so much as touched the ds version i was totally blown away.

I love this thing already.

Bought mine from Target today. They didn't have them out, but as soon as I was able to hunt down an associate to help me she just asked "Blue or Red?" before I even finished what I was asking.

Transfer is a bit clunky but worked fine, I'm currently re-downloading my ambassador games. The bigger screen was absolutely worth paying some extra dough. All those teeny ambassador games should be actually playable now, plus I get the joy of taking my nephew by complete surprise by giving him my OG 3DS. I picked up Mario Kart 7 when I was at the store because I have heard it's great, and I've got NSMB2 on the way from GameFly. Gonna have me some portable gaming fun over the next few weeks :)

I didn't get a free case when I picked mine up at Best Buy. :(

NSMB2 or Super Mario 3D Land? In tempted by the convenience of downloading NSMB2 bit I think I'll enjoy 3D Land more.

Fiancé is currently hogging Mario Kart 7 or else I'd be digging into Zelda right now.

I screwed up with transferring some content from one SD Card to the other and now I've lost my DOA: Dimensions costumes... probably for good. :(

Super Mario 3D Land. There's no debate (my apologies to people for whom NSMB2 is better...you're just wrong =) ). The NSMB series feels like a money-grab. The 3DS feels like it was made just for SML. Get that one.

A larger screen having lower PPI is not a "Nintendo" thing. Don't be ridiculous. Obvious troll post is obvious, however you want to rationalize it.

i don't see how NSMBW is a money grab when it has some of the best physics & game mechanics in the series.

Mario kart 7 is tons of fun. Havent opened NSMB 2 yet, but its 2d platforming off the heels of NSMB Wii, so thats gotta be fun. I know Mario 3D land is good, but the party doesnt start really going till later in game.

NSMB2 is pretty good, but Mario 3D Land is the best game of the system and the best 3D Mario, so get that first.

Yes, a thousand times. 3D Land is a really unique and joyous experience. NSMB2 is 'more NSMB', and much less exciting. I'm enjoying NSMB2 right now, but there's no doubt in my mind 3D Land is by far the better game.

So I don't have a way to use a computer to transfer my 2 gb to my 4gb card. Would redownloading all my 3DS, gameboy, and ambassador games from the eshop work, or is there other data on the SD that I need?

3D Land is a very good game, kind of feels like where the series would have gone if it kept it's original 2D style as it evolved into 3D. I liked it a lot, lots of content, too.

NSMB2 is good, because it plays well and has nice level design but it's basically a very safe and unambitious expansion pack to the Wii game. It's very solid at what it does but you know everything you're getting, there are no frills, no extra features, no layers of polish, no artistic deviations or new thematics, it is what it is.

Any game that creates "extra data" stores it on the SD card. And.. I think save data lives there, too. But I am not positive.

Just to be safe, you really should transfer all your stuff. If you don't have a computer to do it, just.. put the 2GB card in the system. Wait to use the 4GB until you have a way to transfer the data.

[Edit] Just checked, yeah, save data is on SD card, too. If you want to just re-download everything, you'll lose any progress you made.

Now that I have mine in my hands. This really is a fantastic revision and Id be tempted to say should have been like this from the start though im sure price played a factor in original design.

Its just so nice and with the new clickable spots for the upper screen its just perfect.

Does anyone else's 3ds xl make a loud cracking noise at the hinge when opening and closing it?

Here's a vid of mine doing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3c34mrSFcU

It sounds like it's only coming from the right side of the system.

I also noticed that my XL doesn't close flush. The left side of the system doesn't even touch the bottom half when closed, but the right half does.

EDIT: The sound on the right side is also not as loud as the left side. Looks like I got a messed up XL :(

My system transfer kept retiring out everytime I tried it, and now I'm pretty sure I've lost everything.

Mostly just ambassador titles and 4 swords, but it still sucks

Problem is I'm selling my 3ds at 9am tomorrow, so I need to get everything off that sd card to give it with the system. I don't care about my save data at this point, as long as I'm not losing anything else...

Yeah, the "ownership" of the data has been transferred, so all you'll lose is that: associated save and configuration data.

Mine is doing the same thing. Really freaking me out, as this could be a potential DS lite cracked hinge situation. :(

So I waltzed into Best Buy without a preorder this afternoon and picked up a blue XL. Had $30 in best buy RZ money and got the free hard case and everything. Got out to the car and popped it open. Everything was great EXCEPT there was a small piece of white dust on the inside of the screen where you can't get to it. I realize that happens sometimes but I wasn't about to put up with it so I went back in and exchanged. They did not give me a hard time. The second XL was perfect. Screens matched and everything.

Now, the screens are definitely warmer than the OG 3DS. But looking at mine side-by-side if anything the OG is TOO blue. Whites almost have a purple tinge to them. So, IMO the XL screen isn't perfect white but it's actually closer to it than the original screens were in my case. Colors look great. Of course, once you stop comparing screens and start playing games on it you will forget about this warm/cool thing.

As for the sweet spot, I thought it was harder to find until I tried holding the XL further away from my face. This makes perfect sense if you think about it. So rather than adjust the 3D slider first, it may be best to move the system closer or farther away until it looks good, then adjust the slider if necessary.

I love the larger screens and bigger form factor for my hands, but those of you concerned more about PQ than anything else should stay away. It's noticeably softer and jaggies are more pronounced. As I said earlier in the thread, it's not magic, and there are trade-offs. Better battery, but the device is noticeably heavier too.

Doing my transfer now. Can't wait to try these virtual console games at 1:1.

Damn, son that thing is sexy.

But you gotta get better games! Like, right now!

Gamestop better let me trade it in for a new one. Just noticed some messed up pixels on the right side of the screen (A little circular section of pixels are way lighter than the rest around them, though they're not dead).

My 4GB isnt recognized by my PC USB adapter for some reason -_- i'll just redownload and restart whatever I have to from scratch.

This exact same thing happened to me. Lost my place in my virtual console saves and my DOA costumes because of it. :(

I almost though that I had lost my streetpass puzzles that were DLC but that reinstated after receiving a spotpass.

The "warmness" is more evident if you turn off the 3D. I could almost swear there's no difference between the top and bottom screens with the 3D on.
Yeah, I could see that being a problem with some DS games. Otherwise that sort of thing isn't a big deal. I am hoping that by being warmer Tales of the Abyss looks less washed out though.

Just got my system earlier today, didn't know about the free game thing from GameStop. I called them up and the herp-derp worker there didn't even bother to look it up. Said he never heard of it and that it must be an online only deal.

Anyway I love the screens, the best part to me is how great the regular DS games look at 1:1 aspect ratio. It looks like they run at the exact same size as my DSi. :D

I'm reading some people are having to redownload their ambassador games? I transferred everything over all at once, didn't have to download anything again......

You switched the memory card over though, right? I want to use the 4gig card that came with the XL but for some reason I can't copy my stuff over via my USB adapter.

Had no issues with anything with my transfer stuff. Though I pretransferred everything to my new SD Card then did the transfer

I haven't checked my sound yet, from both speakers clearly...

But mine is the same. The left nubby, doesn't quite sit flush and also has a loud snap/click on the right.

...but the right side has the internal hinge locking mechanism, they adjusted the torque according to the Iwata asks...

So unless it really does damage, you'll have 15 months of warranty if you register your serial number through Nintendo.

Lastly, I tried putting pressure on my XL, the screens do not touch - I can see empty space between them and the borders.

Got my Red. System Transfer went off without a problem, and as I already had a 32 GB card prepped with all of my downloads, I put that in after getting the DSiWare off my original 2 GB card (wasn't exactly sure how the system transfer worked, so I had the 2 GB in when I started). Now it's just charging up the rest of the way.

Perhaps the best part of the XL is that VC games can actually be played in 1:1 mode now without eye strain, letting them show off the swank borders. Also, ambassador games look great in 1:1 (tried Metroid Fusion).

From me; 3D Land, Kid Icarus (beware steep learning curve for controls), and Mario Kart 7 are the games you must have. Resident Evil Revelations, StarFox64 3D, Ocarina of Time, Pilotwings Resort, Theatrhythm are all quality. eShop titles like Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force, Colors 3D and Mutant Mudds are worth looking into. But of course, if you're picky on genres, then that'll limit the selection quite a bit.

Overview thread of the system's titles, and there are countless recommendations throughout the thread. Browse away.

If you can find the decent quality (ie; static, no adhesive) screen protectors for the DSiXL, the bottom screen ones will fit. Although there will probably be dozens of options for the 3DS XL soon tooHori, or BodyGuardz are usually decent.

Thank you, I have never played a Zelda game to the end, should I get it on 3DS ?
