Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

What happens when you click Login or run with -useoldlauncher? Everyone I've talked to is crashing.

Ah, i never bother to log in after the updates. I assumed the crash you guys were talking about was simply by starting it up.

So yea, mine crashes too

I'm crashing (well not "crashing," but nothing shows up) at patching time if I DON'T use -useoldlauncher.

Using -useoldlauncher allows me to patch, but I crash when I try to launch.

It's scary that there are a couple of us that do this... This game is evil. I actually have another that is -nopatchui for the mumble. But when I tested it it crashed immediately.

I don't need to use -nopatchui for some reason. Mumble works just fine with -useoldlauncher

You're saying my aging HD 5850 is still going to be able to crank it to ultra?

If anything, were there substantial performance improvements between the first beta periods and the current build? Because I only played a few hours of beta at the very beginning, and while perfectly playable, it wasn't as buttery smooth as i'd prefer.

Yeah people with that card are seeing 45-60 now.

Was it turning shadows to low that really improved framerate?

I had everything cranked to full at 1080p in the last stress test and was getting about 25 fps.

That's a general rule of thumb for all of gaming really. Shadows, post-processing, and shaders are usually the biggest culprits for performance issues in gaming.

Well sure, but GW2 seems to be the only game I've ever played where so many options don't seem to improve framerate.

All we can do is wait and see what the end of development optimization brings as well as new drivers for GW2. Nvidia is supposed to be releasing new drivers on the 21st.

How does this game look when played on a TV? Text too small?

I haven't tried it, but I'm fairly certain you can scale the chat text up. Tooltips and such will probably be harder to read at a distance, I imagine.

:O

Let's hope that stress test this wednesday is really happening! Can't wait to check out how the game runs on my PC!

Just remember it's a stress test; it's designed to test things on their end, not ours. Performance is not representative of final product, yadda yadda yadda, so on and so forth.

Yeah, completely agree with the second point. Expect a few hiccups on launch night, especially with...at least 500k pre-purchasers?

According to Jira's numbers, more like 1.5m pre-purchasers from ArenaNet's site alone, possibly 2.5m total.

I expect a few launch night/weekend hiccups too, and anyone expecting it to be perfect has even more unrealistic expectations than I do, and that makes you a special kind of special. Every MMO launch has had problems, the games are just too large for it to be otherwise. Even Rift (which I thought had a great launch) had its fair share of problems.

Of course, they may actually pull it off, in which case I will be pleasantly surprised. It wouldn't be the first (and I'm sure it wouldn't be the last).

Go dragons!

I've spent the morning STILL trying to work out which classes to play. I'm almost certain to end up buying extra character slots day 1.

I'm fine with professions, it's which races I want to make them that keeps throwing me. I think I might actually abandon my idea of having a Male Norn Warrior and go Male Human. Too bad they all have thin, douchebag facial hair.

I'm fine with professions, it's which races I want to make of each that keeps throwing me.

Yeah, obviously I want to play ALL professions, but some races I just don't like and others make me want to double run a profession just because I think they'd look good in that armor/with that weapon.

Yep, I was considering a Male Norn Warrior for a long time just because they look badass towering over everyone else in plate armor. But I found a female norn setup I really like, and that would leave me with no humans to play (and I want to play them all for obvious story reasons). So I may just make a human instead. He'll still probably look cool, and I was planning to put a helmet on him anyways.

Now if I can just get past Nolan North's voice.

From the small windows I got to play... The UI scale doesn't scale up enough to comfortably play on my 47". I sit around 6 feet away. I actually found the UI scale didn't do anything last BWE. The one before that it seemed to work, both times however the important text on screen wasn't as big as I would have liked. The font choice doesn't help (not a heavy enough weight), the other elements are fine.

It's doable and usable though and maybe fixed at release. Just personal preference for me.

I know people love Nolan North, but it annoys me he's in nearly every video game and cartoon these days.

His voice for the human male isn't deep or gruff enough for me, he sounds like he's discussing getting a manicure when he's talking about Shaemoor being attacked.

Yeah, for whatever reason UI scaling has been broken the last few times we've gotten to play, but in BWE1 and 2 it worked nicely.

Love the g700, but between me and the wife we've gone through 5 of them. Just got her a g600 this weekend and it feels so good, definitely my next mouse.

I've got two questions, I've been keeping the beta client up to date, is this all I will need to play GW2, or do I need to download a second retail client? Also I read something about names being reserved for 24 hours. Does this mean if I make a random character, reserve my name, then I can delete it and have 24 hours to make my final character with that name, or does it mean that after I delete the character I can't remake with the reserved name until 24 hours have expired?

(Click this one today, it's my favorite track so far.)

(Assuming you have access to the 3-day headstart, and if you don't, why not?)

GAFGuild Mega-Awesome Pre-Launch Super-Countdown Festival of Hype Mumble Meet & Greet Event!
Here's another opportunity for everyone to hop on Mumble and get to know their future guildmates before launch. Even if you don't have a microphone, you can still participate since Mumble has a chat window. If you don't want to speak up, that's fine too; talking is not mandatory and you're welcome to just log in and listen (keep the creepy stalker breathing to a minimum though).

The event will begin on Friday, August 25th at Midnight (9PM on the 24th Pacific, 4am GMT) and run for 3 hours. At this point, the game launches and everyone officially has license to freak out. This event is strictly B.Y.O.K (Bring Your Own Kool-Aid). Please note that ArenaNet has stated they may start the game up to 3 hours early, so you might as well get on mumble and spam the Login button with the rest of us.

1. The Client you have now is the client you will use forever.

2. Names you reserve are held for 24 hours after you delete them, giving you plenty of time to go back and remake the character the way you want without fear of someone grabbing your name while you're in character creation. You don't have to wait for anything to use the name again.
