3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

So I went and traded in my spare purple and my little guys aqua 3DS's and got him a red 3DSXL. Transferring his ambassador stuff over now. A nice surprise for him when he finishes his first day of grade 6 ^_^

Having both a Blue XL (mine) and a Red XL (his), I will say I much, much prefer the blue. Glad I moved my preorder to blue and kept it with blue.

So I got to play around with my 3DS a bit finally an I keep wondering is it just me or the eshop hardly has anything worthwhile on it or much content at all? How often to they add things on it? o.O

Like I've said, the VC needs to be a unified store at this point. Let me play my games on either system. I'd seriously buy into the Nintendo eco-system a lot more of they did that and probably pay for a lot more content.

I replaced my daughter's 3DS with a 3DSXL. The blue is indeed beautiful. It's a very nice handheld. The system transfer was a pain in the ass, though it was really cute to watch the Pikmin animations. I need to get a new card reader, I don't think mine can read the XL card. I was able to get a copy of Pilotwings Resort with it, but only because I could show the clerk the website. He claimed it was only for a 3DS or DSi. I love having the Internet on a phone!

Played some games on the Xl last night....

Pilotwings- I don't recall liking this one much on the original. But for some reason it is really clicking with me. But the music....my god the music. It's so awfully cheesy it's almost endearing. But so far I really like how relaxing it feels. 3D looks good too.

Kid Icarus- Yeah, first time playing this was last night. I wasn't expecting it to look so good. They must have had a big budget for this one. Overall it's the graphical showcase of the 3DS so far. I was pretty awe-struck by a few scenes even early-on. Consider me a fan!

Zelda OOT- Another game I played on the original. I think I prefer how the actual 3D looks on the original, but I guess the screen size makes up for that. I can see the 3D, but I keep losing my sweet spot and keep having to adjust my angle. Still I think the XL makes it feel much more inviting than playing on the original.

Overall I am really digging it. I tried out a few DS games and am loving the full screen. I tried 1:1, but preferred the larger size in the end. Nintendo really released something good with the XL. Very satisfied with my purchase.

Mine could not read the XL card either. I had to redownload everything. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get my Dead or Alive costumes over.

Comes out tomorrow here. Excite! I already have starfox64, street fighter iv and pilot wings.

What should get as a 'big' title?Zelda ocarina or super mario 3d land?

Bought one yesterday. Blue. Mario 3D land, Theatrythym and kirby mass attack (never got a ds either) and I absolutely love it so far. The subtle 3D is amazing, so comfortable. This might be my favourite Nintendo portable to date

Have you played OOT before? They are both worth it in my opinion great 3D in both and fun games. Zelda would be my pick for now then get 3D Land next.

Did you have any trouble with the control scheme on on the XL? I'm a lefty and I'm hoping the hand/claw/cramp/crippling grip dissipates a bit with the bigger real estate offered around the XL now. I literally couldn't play it on the OG 3DS

Yes, I have. It's my favourite game of all time! But that,s just it, I've played it before.

At least mario 3d land would be new. Who knows, maybe I'll just get both.

In all honesty, as nice as the extra accuracy of the stylus can be, I find the game is most comfortable when simply using the face buttons to aim. It works really well on the ground and remains pretty simple in the air as well. The game is pretty forgiving at most levels, though I suspect you'd need a stylus to really do well on the upper levels.

Curious to hear how Street Fighter IV is on this thing.

It's been the only game I've really been playing on it, but I never play in 3D. There is still a bunch of people online and it's pretty easy to jump in a game.

I wouldn't say it looks nicer, so much as it's nice to have bigger sprites. Really like the new D-pad for that game

For me, the problem with playing it on the original 3DS was definitely the size. Might grab this for cheap.

Ok, so I did the system transfer last night and everything. But I thought it would also transfer everything to the 4gig card as well. I can only get my system transfer items on the 2 gig. Scared the hell out of me.

DOA Dimensions probably looks marvelous with a bigger screen... Turn the 3D off and enjoy the 60 FPS ride!

Thanks - I'll give that another try. I was pretty bummed since it seemed like a really high production value game. I tried the button aiming in the beginning because I was so annoyed, and it reminded me of playing Peace Walker on the PSP and hating that aiming, though I guess I did get used to it...

Curious to hear how Street Fighter IV is on this thing.

As a port, it's great- the backgrounds are static, but almost everything else has been kept intact. SSF4 3D Edition is based on the original SSF4, however, so there's no Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, and Oni available, nor are any of the balances from AE and AE 2012 available or the last set of alternate outfits. All the arcade mode story cut scenes are intact and Capcom has also added an optional 3D play mode with an over-the-shoulder-viewpoint.

The game runs at 60FPS offline and runs at 30FPS with 3D on and when playing online. You can use the touch screen for PPP and KKK or to map taunts, focus attacks, or throws, or go for an arcade style six button layout and set LP and LK as touch panels (this never felt right for me).

SSF4 definitely looks uglier on the XL, but I found that turning the brightness down helped a bit. It plays well, but I would avoid playing against people using the lite control scheme online- it breaks the game with characters like Guile.

Online is also pretty bare bones, but that goes for all of the 3DS fighting games with online play. I've been back on SSF4, DOA, and Tekken the past few days, and SSF4 definitely still has the largest amount of people playing.

I do find that the game cramps my hands, but it's not as bad on the XL as it was on the regular 3DS.

DoA does look great on this screen. Especially in 2D. I had been itching for a port to Vita but I don't need one now.

None of the fighting games work well in 3D. They're just not made for it (although Tekken at least runs at 60FPS with 3D on) and the sweet spot is bound to be lost in the middle of the action.

No need for a Dimensions port to Vita- but I hope it gets DOA5. :P

My screen protectors came today and like with any screen protector I'm scared to put it on, I'm horrible at them

Hopefully no mess ups or air bubbles

I think i've messed up about 15, had semi success once, and pretty satisfactory results with one.

feels like I'm pissing money away every time I attempt

I was playing against my brother in Mario Kart and Star Fox via download play (me on my XL, my brother on the original). So much fun.

Last post on the page lol. Anyway. Is this right? I wasn't sure if something messed up or not.

My poor Dsi and original 3DS have "retried" screen protectors, meaning I messed up like 4+ times and it wore out the screen protector on my systems :(

Late but lol smh at amazon finally carrying 3DS XL's , I would have got it from there.

Holy hell, first my fiance surprises me with a 3DS XL as a gift (on top of her preordering Dark Souls PC for me unexpectedly), and then my little sister bought me New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D as an early Christmas present since she won't be around for Christmas.

Fucking best week for games in a really long time for me. <3

StarFox 64 3D's overhauled multiplayer is really overlooked by people. And single cart play to boot.

Yeah, even though I probably won't ever playing it again, the first (and only time) I played it was with my brother...for 4 hours straight.

Much better maps and a lot faster paced feeling. It was great, but once you've played a few hours of it, there's really nothing left to play in the multiplayer.

I've been enjoying DOA and Tekken alot more thanks to XL. The Dpad feels way more comfortable to use now, no more back and forth between a shitty dpad and fighting to hit diagonals with circle pad.

I'm liking it better after a couple of days (at first I was thinking of selling it off and going back to OG). NSMB2 looks beautiful on this screen.

However, a couple of things are still bothering me, though they are slowly being outweighed by the positives:

- It makes UI elements look ridiculous. Every button on the lower screen just looks absurd now, like a web browser with the zoom level artificially bumped into senior citizen range.

- The sweet spot is too close. I said this before and am getting used to it, but I'd still greatly prefer if this thing would allow me to hold it further away and still see the 3D. As it stands, I have to hold it as close as I did the OG, and that feels odd with such a huge screen in my face.

Make the buttons smaller then.

Make the buttons smaller then.

You can do that with apps / games (and I did) but my minor gripe is with various buttons, from the PLAY button on videos to the front menu of nearly every game. Everything is just so enormous... kind of making me cringe from a UI-design perspective. But it's not a huge problem, just one of those things that bother me.

I'm probably getting a 3ds xl in the next day or two (I don't think I can't wait for the wii u release). Anyway, I only have enough cash for one game. I'm thinking either kingdom hearts or kid Icarus. I have never played a kh game but dream drop looks pretty fun. I'm totally willing to look into other games as well, any suggestion?
