COMICS! August l OT l So what's new with comics?

The term graphic novel is not pretentious. It refers mostly to long-form independent comics that aren't comprised of individual issues. Comics refers to single issues or the medium as a whole. Trade paperbacks are collections of those issues. Watchmen is a trade paperback.

Not anymore.

I guess they've started to call Watchmen a graphic novel but initially it was a comic book series that was collected into a TPB.

Weren't Superman and Wonder Woman a couple in the 80s Superman cartoon?

BTW, could someone post the full list of writers and artists on Marvel's relaunch later this year?

Hmmmmmmmmmm *reads newsarama* Liefield quitting DC officially, 0 issues his last issues for DC.

Quicker than expected, but all those books are going to get canned and we know it.

Haha, yeah they are. Its strange they dont get canceled with Liefeld but the minute someone else does its death.

I don't think so, he's in JL Dark and pops up in JL as well, both of those books are 'present day' (the biggest mistake DC made was setting a couple of books in the past, so much confusion). Unless, did he die recently?

In like the last or one of the last JL books they show up to save Steve and they say it's too late he's already dead.

feels like so many New 52 DC books were, and still are, sent to die painful deaths.

Yeah, wasn't GI Combat part of the New 52? I think they're only up to issue 4 at the moment.

I'm not doubting the original meaning and use of the term, but what it means now and how it's used.

i think GI Combat was part of a second wave, coming after two already sent to die books in Blackhawks and Sgt Rock and the men of war.

and surprise, it's going to die too:

July sales

157 G.I. Combat 3* $3.99 DC 12,923

Hmm how has recent Punisher been?

It's, so far, a fucking solid run. "Slow burn" is the phrase most thrown around when it's discussed but that is in no way a bad thing. Rucka has made Frank into a monomaniacal and no-nonsense character. He's super stoic and rarely speaks, aside from grunts and combat jargon, but the story is compelling and the art is top-notch. It's also interesting because the brutality of Punisher and his methodical killing is juxtaposed with the rest of the NY superheroes and that makes the killing more prominent. It'll be interesting to see how it all goes down in the finale, War Zone .

But North Korean soldiers fighting Dinosaurs! Truthfully it wasn't that good, but the second story published was descent.

I have one issue of Men of War and I keep planning to get other ones.

Cool, I just hope starting with the current issue won't leave me too out of the loop.

Walked into the shop and saw the Amazing Spider-Man variants all lined up and almost passed out.

Marcos Martin has redefined cover art forever. Almost bought all five.

ALMOST

BOUGHT

ALL

FIVE

You hate Watchmen so therefore will love Jeph Loeb. Ipsofacto.

:D

I don't hate, just feel meh about it. Perhaps watching it via the motion comic wasn't the best way. lol Also I was still annoyed with all the V for Vendetta stuff floating around.

Oh 50th Anniversary of Spideman and it's $5.99 (use I realize it's 56 pages), but is it expected to be anything good for the price their charging?

The Martin covers are worth at least $40 each.

There are like 4 really good alternate covers and like 3 different stories in there. Honestly if those covers were available as posters I would totally get one. Still, I guess that would depend on how much you like the current run.

The Matters of Life and Death trade has a great Martin arc in it.

I've heard good things about this Batman:Court/Night of the Owls story from some friends. Is there a collected book planned or anything because from what I heard at my local comic shop it seems like it hits quite a few different books.

They have the first half out already, but the second isn't coming until next year. It's very awesome though, especially if you get to read it all at once.

Honestly, I've never read any ASM, just him in the AvX and Avengers comics.

It's amazing. I can't say much without spoiling it, but I really really loved it. In fact go read it so I can talk about the cool stuff in it. lol Not sure if it's collected yet, but I only read the main stories, I'm too cheap for tie ins usually...well at least at the moment. lol

In particular

Attack on Wayne Manor...and T-Rex and the armored suit

I really love the Marvel NY books. Daredevil, Spider-Man, Punisher, and Hawkeye are all great reads. Spidey went through some crazy continuity shit, but Slott has got the ship on a steady course.

Big Time Ultimate Collection is a fantastic deal. It covers the first 3 trades of the Slott run.

This is what you should start with Manos, I'm not saying get all the trades up til now or something but this book pretty much sets up a lot of future story lines. That or Spider-Island omnibus, summaries don't really do this current run justice since they sound dumb but somehow seem to play out really well.

Alpha will just lose his powers, you morbid people.

Part of me wants to believe he gives them up to save the day or something, but that seems a bit too kind right now. Especially considering the direction this run is taking.

Doing a quick re-read of the Spiderman issue; I would love to see Alpha go to the galactic guardians or something; he has the "universe expanding" motiff, he won't be that overpowered and it will be a good "sacrifice"; give up life of girls and fame on earth to the cold of space where his powers are really needed.

The page where he is learning how to be a good super-hero with spiderman is really good, even if it ends with the way it did.

Actually, talking about him now, I'm fond of the little guy. You fucked up Nomad and Araña, Marvel; don't fuck another potentially cool teen hero on his first arc!

How does Loeb keep getting work? Stupid Wolverine retcon SPOILERS

Naming a female character
Remus
is already on the daft side, let alone pointing out her hair color and accent every three pages.

The Ultimates 14 was good I need to get the middle part as I got 1-6 on sale and only got the last issue. Back issues should not be full price after the last 2 issues. Still good follow up to reintroducing Cap.

Oh so you didn't actually read it then? You really should. For me, the form and the medium is a big Parton the feel of the book. That repetitive, restrictive 9 panel grid, the way it paces the book, I don't think you can get that across in a motion comic at all. Plus the book is more of a multimedia thing with the text pieces and the way they relate to the whole experience.

I mean, it's not the best book in the world, but it is both a cracking read and a master class in this elegant construction in how form mirrors content.

But really you are perfectly entitled not to like it, it's not the end of the world :)

Have you read V?

I wonder if Liefeld got kicked out once he spoke up about plans to leave DC behind. He kept saying that his departure was happening in 2013 and was a long ways off, now he's gone before year's end. He's changed his tune about the reasons for leaving too.

Batman volume 1, do it. I guess DC might collect all the cash grab bullshit tie in issues but they are entirely non essential fluff. I really hate these tie in events and how casual readers are suckered in to buying them. Tbh id prefer an old school crossover where you get 8 parts spread over all the titles and where you NEED to have all of them for the story (like the classic Contagion arc, or Knightfall). In the main Batman book the 'night' of the owls is barely a blip, it's not the real story. Possibly the only interesting one would be Nightwing's, and even that is pushing it since the execution was pretty pedestrian. Just read the Snyder stuff and enjoy a tight and exciting story. Trust me.

Kinda wanna see him on a Word Balloon podcast soon now. I imagine he'd say a lot of unfiltered stuff about the current state of DC.

Roberson was supposed to finish a Fairest arc but since he said he was quitting DC, didn't they cancel his commitment entirely? Makes sense they do the same with Liefeld.

#698-700 won't be a retread. Slott said this is something that he can't believe no one has done with Spidey before. The Jackal will be involved somehow because he said that all of the stories have been building up to what happens in 700.

They're not going to kill Peter Parker. Bendis JUST did that last year. I have faith this will be fun and shocking. I just don't want MJ to die.

well... bendis killed ultimate Spidey though ;)

How many Batman comics is Court of the Owls? Can I just buy the first dozen issues or so on Comixology and get the whole thing so far? They also have a "Night of the Owls" storyline section that's about 15 books. Is that it?

if you want to you can just read Snyder's Batman book from the first issue to twelve and skip all the other night of the owls tangent books. It's not a "next part in Catwoman " story.

Rocketeer was aces. It's very much a "thrown in the deep end" kind of opening issue, and if you don't know these characters you may end up scratching your head. But Mark Waid finally did something I've been dying to see; he put the shoe on the other foot with Betty, and for that alone I'm grateful. The wait until next issue is going to be interminable.
