I've always wondered, how did they create that image? The magazine looks like it's really old, and the picture indicates it's well before his skin colour began to change. So how was it done?

Edit: Is it a painting? Damned realistic if it is.

Back then, and even much earlier than that in fact, photographers actually already " 'shopped " pictures.

It didn't start with photoshop, photographers actually 'physically' edited and adjusted their pictures, painting directly on them.

I have a couple pics of my grandmother as a young girl that are basically 60% painting, you can only tell when holding them close. Took a lot more skill than photoshop.

In this case it's probably a combination of two negatives by exposing the positive with each fotograph and using masks. I did this myself but with B/W photography and the effects are quite nice if you work dilligently and use the masks right.

I figure it would be a much harder with colour though.
