I think Boateng-Dante is going to be our starting CB pairing this season, unless one of them makes a huge mistake or something (Boateng, surely). Badstuber needs to learn how to make a fucking header before being a starter again.

I doubt we'll use Martínez in difficult matches like vs. RM or Dortmund. Luiz Gustavo is our guy for those kind of matches, Javi is more suited to play against Bundesliga sides because he can also create but his defensive skills aren't that great if you compare him to Gustavo.

Personally, I believe Badstuber has his place locked down. Of course, the first couple matches say otherwise, but until Alaba is back it's difficult to make predictions.

And I agree that Gustavo will play the difficult matches. It's just that I don't seem them benching Martinez, so they might make use of his other position.

Interesting idea, i wouldnt give up on Boateng, though. Look at Badstuber, he looked horrible in his first season at Bayern too.

True. I'll withhold judgement on Boateng for now. He does have all the abilities, it seems to be a mental problem with him. And, of course, looking like Steve Urkel.

Questions must be asked if Marotta fails to sign a striker again.

And we're not interested in Oscar Cardozo apparently.

I personally think that we will sign Walcott and Dempsey..

Obviously as i mentioned a while ago Walcott was a target..

I cant tell you what Walcott is thinking but i do know the club want him..

Cheers

Macca

pls rodgy

Do it. We'll pay you to get him on loan.

According to the rumor we want a loan with option to buy but in that case you guys are demanding we pay 100% of his ridiculous wages.

Honestly I want nothing to do with Mexes. Schalke should just stop being JTs and take our 20 million for Papadopoulos.

I see a medical staff taking their time as evidence of competence, not the reverse.

Numpties on a podcast tossing out a "questions need to be asked" - well, you'd call it lazy and irresponsible, but that rather goes without saying.

Anderson has pretty much always been fat. Rooney has always been an endomorph. So ?

Pshaw, as though such questions haven't been posed for years about the Arsenal medical staff, seems like a perfectly valid thing to question. Of course it is ridiculous that journalists say something like 'questions need to be asked' when it is their job to ask them, but the point they raise is fair.

The "how do you start a season with an injury crisis ?" thing would be unworthy of the dumbest poster on the dumbest fan forum.

And the reason it even comes close to any sane definition of "crisis" is because the players are largely from the same position. A circumstance which you'd have to be a fucking idiot to attribute to any action or incompetence of the medical staff.

Speaking of trophies, 4 years ago today, Zenit beat Man U to win the UEFA Super Cup. Hey Fergie, how about we commemorate this glorious event by selling us Nani.

Well Lille's chairman says he's not selling Debuchy even if they get knocked out tonight.

Meh.

Any other RBs available?

I'm completely out of ideas. This season Newcastle will implode, I can see it. Say goodbye to Ba, Cisse, Cabaye and Tiote cos they'll be off in January/next Summer. Plus we haven't strengthened to the point where we can still go toe to toe with the others in the top 7. We have a good squad but zero depth. Remove any one of our first 11 and we'll stumble like the inadequate and incompetent tards we really are. Our best players are just glitter covering a pile of shit.

Very grim window for us. Last season we got our lads in early (aside from Santon who came in August 30).

I think Andy Carroll is coming but it's just mind boggling why we're prepared to pay the higher price for him when he's not even going to be first choice striker. Meh. I feel bad for Pardew. With finances he could have a really awesome squad. :(

Anyone ever watched Nastasic play in Serie A btw? Hard finding info about him, except that apparently he's very composed for his age.

United were rumoured to have bid for him in January.

"Matija Nastasić

A team-mate of Ljajic, the Fiorentina centre-back took the Serie A by storm this year in the wake of Cesare Natali’s injury. Making his competitive debut in September in a late substitute appearance against Bologna, he waited until November 19th to get a starting spot against no less than AC Milan, and showed immense composure throughout despite the sight of Ibrahimovic and Pato looming, helping his team secure a clean sheet against currently the best team in Italy. This ultimately led him to a starting spot in the Viola set-up, which is a feat in Italy considering his tender age – 18 years old. The youngster was tapped from Partizan Belgrade’s youth academy before he even played a single minute for the senior team by Sinisa Mihajlovic, then the Fiorentina manager who had heard great things about the robust defender. Many other compliments flowed since then, as AC Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta labelled him a ‘fuoriclasse’ (wonderkid) in the wake of his performance against Milan. Together with Uros Cosic, he may command the centre-back partnership that will keep Serbia’s opponents at bay in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, unless Nemanja Vidic carries a Ryan Giggs type of genetic anomaly."

Maybe they were counting on selling one of Krul/Coloccini/Cabaye/Tiote to generate funds. It is odd how nobody has really tried to take any of Newcastle's better players.

We don't need to sell to buy, we're in a good position financially, but our owner is a tight arse this summer. :(

I was thinking about Uniteds squad and how we're covered in cases of injury. IMO we have a pretty decent standard of replacements. CM is the exception though, as Carrick is the only nailed on starter. Kagawa is the only player we have that can do an effective job playing behind the striker. He could also play wide left if we need him to. I'm pretty happy with the squad we have, apart from CM.

De Gea (Lindegaard)

Rafael(Smalling/Jones)
Vidic(Smalling/Jones/Evans)
Rio(Smalling/Jones/Evans)
Evra(Buttner/Evans)

Carrick(Cleverley/Giggs/Scholes/Anderson)
???
Valencia(Young/Nani)
Nani(Young/Kagawa)

Rooney(Welbeck/Hernandez/Henriquez/Macheda)
RVP(Welbeck/Hernandez/Henriquez/Macheda)

Squads good Clegg. We added some real quality with RVP and Kagawa which makes me feel like we have 3/4 world class players now.

What I'm hoping for this season though is that some of the younger players make a step up, because soon we will need a couple of them to be taking starting roles, the likes of Rafael, Jones, Cleverley all need to have strong seasons. Hopefully Powell does well too.

And watch out for Janujaz.

He'll end up leaving like Pogba :(

Reading about Football Manager in the Steam thread has piqued my curiousity.

So as someone who has fond memories of playing FM back when it was still called Championship Manager in the mid-90s (I played both the early versions where the menus are a bunch of blue squares and where your worst nightmare is your best player declaring that he is leaving for a foreign club at the end of the season as well the signuficantly revamped and superior later versions), how different and how much better are the games of today? Also, I figure I should just wait for FM13 before taking the plunge?

Theyre incredibly more in depth. It may shock you and just be too much. I've played it consistently since about CM98 do the change has been gradual.

Edit - Ah I see you have played some of the newer ones.

The game is still fantastic, but, and this may just be nostalgia, there was something about the CM days which I feel the game now struggles to replicate. I think it's to do with the speed of the game back then, it takes a couple of hours just to start the season now. Back then you could play a whole season in one afternoon.

Based on form here at the start of the season, it's hard for me to call who I think will be holding the cards when the push comes at the end.

United have that brilliant attack with Valencia, Kagawa and Van Persie

City have a leg up in terms of squad quality, when you compare them on paper (Agüero > RVP, Silva > Kagawa, Tevez = Rooney, Yaya Toure > Cleverly, Kompany > Vidic), but based on form and how they're playing, you wouldn't be wrong to reverse half of if not most of those. And of course Agüero is absolutely crucial and is going to be out for a couple more weeks.

If RVP and Kagawa, who are both injury-prone, can get a run of games without being injured then I give the advantage to United. They'll be able to bully teams with the incisive play between Kagawa and RVP and the relentless pressure from the wide players, in particular Valencia. The problem will be when their opponents get a foothold in the midfield, they have a hard time building up steam and look vulnerable with an unpredictable goalkeeper and a defensive line perpetually in crisis.

If City find their form that they had last season, I think they'll have the confidence and feel emboldened by the title victory and will be able to comfortably keep a lead throughout the season.

And of course, Chelsea, who are a bit of a dark horse, are having a great start, but that may trail off when they hit their yearly slump in the fall.

Tottenham and Arsenal simply aren't title contenders, as we all know. But how they play will definitely have an effect on the title race.

Mike Keegen of MEN says Berba was spotted at Manchester Airport. Will most likely be on his way to Fiorentina, probably for a medical.

No more Berbasex in the PL :'(

Ah yes, I do remember finishing a season in one sitting. It was a loooong sitting but still just one sitting regardless.

How are transfers and contracts negotiations now? Are they dynamic and is there simulated dialogue of some form? Also do you get to make remarks to the press on your team and stuff? Finally, how is the in-match engine? Is it somewhat realistic and a accurate reflection of the skill differentials between players?

I don't think Rafael will be our first choice RB. Probably going to be Smalling, IMO.

And I rather see Anderson and Cleverley forming some sort of midfield trifecta with Kagawa just ahead of them. Could make for some exciting attacking stuff.

And yes, I do think our squad is awesome for this season so long as we don't get the same injury issues as we did last season.

I tried a Football Manager demo a few years ago and it seemed quite a bit more complex than CM.

I'll just stick to replaying an old CM over and over again just to enjoy seeing the stats go crazy.

Yeah, that's more or less all that can be said about him for now. I saw him in two matches, he certainly looks like he could develop into a great CB. Judging from Fiorentina - Udinese I wouldn't say he's ready to be a starting XI player in a big team though. We're not talking Nesta levels of talent here.

Happy for that, if we can't buy anyone really stronger than what we have is better to not spend money.

I've watched him in some highlights and probably some match too, I was never really that impressed, but he has potential for his age. The price is really high , but we bought Bonucci and Inter bought Ranocchia for 20m€ so...Yesterday in tv they said that Mancini was convinced to buy him from Mihajlovic who said to him that Nastasic will become one of the best defender in the world in 2 years.

Thanks. Yeah I don't think Mancini sees him as starting, Lescott and Kompany will be ahead of him. Let's see if Kolo stays or go though.

Transfers/Contracts - The transfers are still by and large as they were. You make a bid, wait for the response, back and forth. There are alot more transfer options now though, different clauses and options to ask for the board to assist and you can make public comments which can help you get the player. Contract negotiations are "real time" and you will make a contract offer and then the players agent will respond, until you either agree or walk away.

Public Remarks - There's alot of this now. You can comment on alot of stuff, your team, specific players, other players/team, managers. It all has an effect and it can be quite fun but after a while I find it just gets a bit tedious and boring. It's still cool though and it does serve a purpose in helping the morale of your players, or weakening the morale of others. You can also speak with your players/or they approach you to go through any concerns or to make suggestions to them.

Match Engine - I have always been a bit sceptical about the 3D match engine but this year's game, its really good. It's quick and more realistic than ever. You do get a sense of some players being better than others, but not massively so, I watch the game at a high speed anyway so it whizzes by mostly. Perhaps at a slower speed differences are more apparent.

I wonder what changes they'll be making for FM 13.

The teams are going to be ajdusted for new signings but other stuff is has to change.
