Honestly, I wish mods would take as severe a stance as they do with other console wars nonsense. If I were to go trolling a Nintendo thread I'd find myself out on my arse quicksharp, these guys need to do the same. One month ban for any dismissive lol.
Yeah, other iOS threads really grind my gears. It's like 2008 again where 90% of people "just can't type on touch screens". The jury's in on this one folks.
Looks like prayers were answered as Stump is laying down the law in the Bastion thread, OP warnings, deleted posts and all.

I dunno, GAF has always had a history of making one platform the whipping boy for snide remarks. Almost every console-maker or platform has taken their turn.

As much as I like iOS and touch controls, it deserves some of the shit it gets.

There's no problem with a bit of trashing and all platforms do get they share, the same happened for a while with handhelds in general too. The TWEWY announcement thread and the Bastion thread before the clean up were too over the top though. Like Jedeye said, when you get so many people doing drive-by crap posts it drowns any possibility of ongoing decent discussion. You have someone posting an impression or question just to see it quickly being pushed one page back by all the thread shitting.

You know what I would like to play on my iPad? CivCity Rome and Alpha Centauri.

Or more Civ games. I need them.

Yep. But with the dominance of the F2P schtick slapped on games like that, it's rare. It's too bad, too, the platform is literally perfect for it. But I guess more money can be had from F2P games.

Why do you think it deserves some?

Lack of innovation, an endless calvacade of shit games to wade through, IAP, poor control choices by devs. Just to name a few of the big ones.

I think the pros outweigh the cons, but I'm not going to pretend like this platform is free of it's baggage.

Well I certainly agree with you. I see the platform as still being in its infancy and it continues to improve.

Let's add console developers (*cough* Square) doing fuckall with half their games and assuming it'll sell at around $20.

That's the thing, those points are usually made by those who actually play on the platform and we even go over them all the time in this thread. The people who sometimes flock to the separate announcement threads just think iOS and touch controls are shit period, then proceed to keep posting one-liners. Anyway, it will all even out eventually with the need of more OTs for bigger games that wouldn't fit this thread.

So what was going on in that Bastion thread before 101 posts were deleted?
The usual iOS sucks, touch controls suck, with a bit of port whining on top.

Looks like Brainsss is on sale for $.99. Not to mention it just got a pretty big update with now standard iCloud and iPad retina, but also a bunch of new characters and improved controls with its saved groups toolbar.

I deleted this off my phone when I needed space (it was the largest app I had, it is again:(, but I figured it would be a good time to play again. Especially with cloud saves so i can come and go as I please:)

I've been playing Amateur Surgeon 2. It is really fn, and make wish for Trauma Center games in the App Store. They are a no brainer.

Amateur Surgeon 2 is free right now btw.

LOL at the now shrinked Bastion OT thread...it's not the thread I rembered last night anynmore :P

BTW...Bastion is... O_O

Played just a bit but, technically, OMG.
Both control schemes works, still undecided which one to pick up.

I'll sink in it later but...they really did one heck of a port (yes, I have a 360 too).

The visceral and personal experience of holding this colorful world being built in front of your eyes in your hands is imho more suited to the game than watching it brought to life on a TV set.

agreed. it's on a different level of immersiveness on an iPad 3 retina display and my Bose headphones bumping the great sound design. highly recommended.

Hey guys. Surprisingly, the auto attack gameplay works. It's more laid back, like Justin said, but it's fun. I prefer virtual pad because I'm pretty used to them, but I can see why someone would find the point controls more enjoyable.

Couple of suggestions though:

1 - Allow me to fully customize the button placement. It's a must in games with virtual controls.
2 - In the point mode, keep the ranged attack automatic, but add tap to attack when using melee. Love to tap tap tap some suckers!

Anyway, uploading a video on Youtube now. Tried my best not to cover the screen with my fingers.

Ah, you can't customise the control placement? Hmmm, this makes me worry a little bit. Where is the stick, can I move that?

I might just play in casual mode I reckon. I'm not super attached to needed to hit the attack button, it's usually just an automatic response from my thumb anyway.

Can't wait to get home and go on a spending spree - if I buy TWEWY and Bastion today, Apple won't charge me till a few days' time, will they??

Sorry to hijack the thread.
I could use some advice about headphones.
I'm not a purist so no 1K wooden headphones :P

I was looking even at wireless SMALL headphones (small, like the normal iPhone headphones, not the cup ones)...I know they generally suck but is there anything worthy recently?
I just want to get rid of the cable, I play in bed in every sort of position and it bothers me (not even mentioning wife :P).

Can't wait to get back playing Bastion!!!

The joystick is invisible till you touch the screen, it appears in any position, so that's covered.
Just the buttons seem fixed.

Apple charges anywhere from 1 day to 10 days in my experience.

Bought Supermagical 4 days ago and I just received the notice.
Still nothing about Bastion yet.

Good on both counts then :) As long as I can keep my stick-hand comfortable I'm not too fussed on where the button hand goes.

And double good about the billing. TWEWY and Bastion shall be mine!

Came here to say that I got an iPad retina the other day ($400 from a friend w smart cover and $25 iTunes GC) and I'm such a believer. Wow.

Games that have made me so:

Gasketball
Mass Effect
SuperMagical

Welcome to the club. Just buy everything you see us talking about and you will be happy.

EDIT: but make sure you play the buggers! we don't need another backlog larry in the thread, hoarding games that he never plays (I don't even know who this is aimed at but I know there's a million of them out there!)

Been playing the bastion ios port, and first impressions are that it is a fantastic port. Controls great, I've been using the classic controls but the new ones work just as well. <3 Supergiant games
EDIT: I do miss the rumble you get when you do a breaking shot with the breakers bow on the 360.

Ahem. Uh, yeah, those people suck!

(I dread to think how many games I've bought that I will never get around to playing).

Since I got an Intellivision (I'm a bit old, yes) I made a point to complete one game before buying another one (maybe it was an agreement with my father, can't remember).
I always like to sink in one game per time (I especially like story based games).

I complied to this self imposed rule always, including hectic days of Commodore 64 and Amiga.
I'm proud to say I completed all the games I bought, even the massive over 100 hours ones (and I played all I wanted to, imho it's a more efficient way than getting 10 games and playing no one really).

This lasted till now.
iOS gaming make this incredibly difficult, you can't really have a gaming plan becaus eyou do not know when games are out, when a cool update makes you return to a game you loved and such.

Yesterday night I capitulated...was playing Supermagical (on iPad) and Legend Four (on iPhone) but I couldn't say no to Bastion.

These are really troublesome days :P

EDIT: And let me add this will be getting worse nearing Christmas...lot of great upcoming games!!!

I've got plenty of games that I bought, didn't like and deleted, but if I like a game I'll definitely finish it. I'm quite proud of my completion record, I've played and completed massive games (FFT, Aquaria, Hunters, Monkey Island, Bring me Sandwiches etc). The trouble with iOS is that it's really easy to be stricken with 'emulator syndrome' in that having too many games means you'll play 2 mins of this, 5 mins of that and never get a rhythm going on anything.

Much like PittaGAF I like to sink time into a single game, really soak it up. And I'm quite capable of *gasp* not buying a game for a little while if I have too much on my plate. They'll still be there, they're not gonna sell out or anything. And if I never get around to playing it, well now I have more money to buy sweets with :D

Well, now besides playing Trigger Fist, Puzzle Quest, and Epoch, I also have to make time for "The Last Driver".

Endless Runners make me feel like that damn Godfather movie: "Everytime I get out, they pull me back iiiiin!".

Last driver has a ton of crazy shit going on. Not only do you have zombies, but with the earthquakes, dinosaurs, ufo's, and tornadoes it reminds me a lot of Speed Devils for the Dreamcast (Only thematically, of course).

Hey, for free? What the Hell!

I can't play shoot'em ups (where do you put the apostrophes?) or things like bit trip beat that require continuous pressing and movement, my finger just starts sticking to the screen. So I just tend to avoid games that I don't think control properly. Most are fine.

It doesn't get a free pass just because its successful - if a game implements controls that are not suited to touch it deserves to get pointed out.

There's a big difference between legitimate criticism and baseless trolling. We were seeing none of the former and plenty of the latter in the Bastion thread.

I'm with you on the sticky fingers. I love the Cave shmups but I have to break after every 2 levels lest I get a friction burn.

about Bastion... i don't think i can play any real time games where your arm covers up half the screen... is that how Bastion works? I lost interest in Aquaria very quickly because of this.

and in other news I just discovered Triple Town....zomg...

You can turn on a virtual d-pad, so you're only covering the corners of the screen with your thumbs. Works really well!

Every time my download progress gets to 99% the game tells me that the connection has been lost. I have several GBs worth of space so that's not the issue.

Anybody else having trouble updating from within the app to get episode 2?

I'm on the new iPad and I purchased the $14.99 4 pack.

I like Bastion for the half hour I played, does get a low frame rate in places on my ipad 3 but it's fully playable. Been using virtual stick controls.

I do admire you chaps that have self-control.

Bastion sitting at 34th top grossing in the UK store. Nice.

You mean self-control from buying? It helps when you only have an iPad 1 and an iPhone 3G!

Just picked up a 3DSXL, so i'm leaping back into 'real' gaming after being more or less exclusive iOS gamer for a few years.

Feels good, man.

I'm going to keep iPad around for what it does best though, stuff like casual games and board games.

I find that a screen protector stops that. Without one any moisture on my fingers causes them to stick. With it on it just glides over nicely.

Just renewed my apple dev license, so that means it's been about a year since I bought my mac mini and started real work on my iOS game, time flies man...
