This is why those packs are so cheap.

That's not why I'm buying at all, though; it's for the foils.

Rare foils:
Foil avatars are 5-30 each, every other rare foil is at least a dollar thanks to the "pimp" factor of old foils. Even the lands fetch a few bucks each if foil, and these are English prices. Pre-modern Chinese had a fairly low print run compared to post-kamigawa, and is worth a bit more.

Uncommon foils:

Foil Foil is $5 english.

Common foils:

Foil Rhystic Study is $25.

EDIT: Packs aren't sorted; they're blister packs, like the ones you see at wal-mart.

At those prices, wouldn't you be doing better to drop 35 dollars on a Rystic Study, Foil, and a random rare or 2? In all seriousness, the odds of getting a foil Rhystic Study is absurdly low in only 36 packs.

Wish they had Standard or Legacy as the format.

Maybe it is due to following SCG coverage, but I have no interest in Modern. I only play Standard myself, and I think it would have been nice to see these pros play finely tuned decks on the eve of rotation, when both M12 and M13 are still legal.

I think I'd be interested in Modern if there weren't combo decks around, because I can build a rogue deck of some sort and still hope for the occasional win. In general though, I have little interest in Modern. I'm trying to build a budget mono-blue deck for Legacy (including saving up for a playset of Force of Will).

Eh, there would probably be almost nothing in the way of inventive decks. If the last tour showed anything, they want a stable deck like delver to play instead of breaking the mold, especially in a tournament that is as important as this for rankings.

True, but Delver itself has quite a few variants, and at least people would be familiar with the cards being played. As it is I don't know what most of the cards in Modern do and even with the commentators it isn't as easy to follow if you''re not familiar.

That said, I think we still would have seen some slight innovations with even Standard. Delver isn't what it used to be now that everyone is running Caverns.

Ya, I feel the same with legacy. I don't know what the fuck is going on most of the time. I've gotten a little better since cubing often.

Edit: Wow, stream just won't load on my mac now. Fuck you flash.

Jesus, and Finkle just got Iyanaga by casting Mana leak into 2 untapped lands and a fetch, knowing that there were no more lands left in his deck. Iyanaga cracks anyway, and fails to find.

Guess he wasn't kidding when he spent most of the year saying that he was done playing Magic, and probably wasn't coming to this event.

Yasooka went 9-1? Holy fuck!

? Who said they weren't coming to this event? Iyanaga?

For most of the year, Iyanaga was looking like he was skipping the event- he got a job that made it so leaving Japan for an extended period of time wasn't going to be easy. He pretty much has said he is retired from the game, but was able to get enough time off at the last minute to make it out (and considering he is getting 1,000 bucks and airfair plus hotel to just show up, it makes little sense to not make every effort to show up). Its kind of clear he didn't really test much- the fact that Finkel knew his deck better than he did is proof of that.

Ah ok, ya, he seemed to not have enough targets for the sac lands. They seemed dead a decent amount, especially with path to exile.

Haunt is just a llllliiiittttle bit greedy.

Haha, he seemed greedy in more than just haunt. His mana base was just bizarre.

Edit: Is connely woods actually good at all? I feel like I've complained about this before but he just seems awful watching his videos on channelfireball and his last draft where he totally fucked up was just embarassing, not sure why he even uploaded.

Ive never watched high level Magic the Gathering before. It is pretty fun to watch, even though I don't know what is going on half the time.

I am just getting back into Magic after a long hiatus. The last time I was really into Magic was around the Kamigawa sets. I must have missed so much. It is going to take a long time to catch up with all the new stuff.

I have no idea what Planewalkers are... for example heh.

I've wondered this as well actually.

I've wondered this as well actually.

I remember watching his Quarterfinal game against Wescoe at last years Worlds, and thinking that he was the best player on the planet. If you missed it, go find it in the archives- his game 5 was a masterstroke.

That's pretty much the last relevant thing he's done though, right? That was the tournament where Tempered Steel came out and did its thing.

So I just paid up and downloaded the MTGO client. It's generally agreed that it's a nightmare in user interface design, correct?

Pretty much.

Don't spend any money on tournaments until you've played a ton of casual games and have a good grasp on the interface. You will lose games because you do things the wrong way for a while.

He won a Grand Prix this year, playing Glissa in his deck because he's Conley http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/gporl12/welcome

Maybe he just sucks balls at draft then? I've only seen his draft videos and they're like cringe worthy he plays so bad and it's always he loses like 0-2 and then drops from the tournament so there's two videos of him drafting like shit and then him losing so badly and dropping which is just annoying to watch.

Listen to this man, I've been annoyed a couple times by not understand the timing/sometimes bulky interface. You know the move you want to do, you just don't always know it in relation to their interface at first. Most frustrating thing ever to lose that way.

So tomorrow I'll be heading down to the SCG Open in Minneapolis but there are some cards I really want to change my deck with, are there typically lots of vendors selling singles (including uncommons)?

Also, I've never gone to an event like this before, is there anything I need to (or you guys would recommend) bring?

There's one vendor. SCG. (This is why they're able to run the Legacy events as a loss-leader.)

Don't bring a lot of stuff, unless you're like me and the best way of keeping your stuff safe is to just make your bag heavy so you're always aware of it.

SCG will have a large dealer setup there, lots of singles coming and going so with any luck you shouldn't have a problem getting what you need. I'd recommend taking as little as possible with you. Paper, pen, deck, playmat if you use one, dice for when necessary. Optional stuff like water and snacks. Watch your stuff closely, especially if you bring anything more than that.

I feel like we should hang out or something but I think I'm busy tomorrow.

Rakdos mechanic.

Thanks guys. Hoping I can get my optimal decklist. If you see a green/white human deck on stream, it'll be me! Muahahaha

Ah that would have been cool, too bad though, maybe some other time :P

First new mechanic that actually looks interesting. I like it. Some very interesting decisions it could force you into.
I also think I like how none of the mechanics revealed so far aren't very splashy. After the very holistically driven Innistrad block (which was awesome) I think I like the idea of returning to something slightly more subdued mechanically. The pendulum of Magic swings back and forth.

Interesting mechanic. I'm surprised it doesn't have a number after it though. IE Unleash 3 for 3 counters.

If I'm reading it correctly, you could put a +1/+1 counter on it from some other source and it wouldn't be able to block. Right?

Yeah, the lack of a number is weird. They don't usually do that anymore. All three mechanics so far are really utilitarian though, which really has me thinking that they're shooting for more emergent gameplay this block with a lot of simple interactions.

Does that mean it will always just be one +1/+1 counter?

Its very premature to judge three mechanics based on three cards but all of them so far, especially the B/R and B/G ones feel designed for Limited. I'm very curious what Constructed playable cards they'll print.
