I actually wonder if the uncompressed music was done for performance reasons. The Cave iOS releases, for example, switched from compressed music (Espgaluda II's original release) to uncompressed (everything else as far as I know)... and at the sample rate they're presented at in the smartphone versions, it certainly wasn't for quality reasons.

You're already on thin ice anyway man :P You are occasionally so right that I want to shake your hand enthusiastically. Other times not so much :|

The music in this game is just so bad - actually, let me reverse and try to parse this out. The music isn't necessarily 'bad', but it is very jpop, very Engrish and nonsensical in that anime-soundtrack "let's go fighting love yeah!" kind of way. It is, to put it lightly, not my cup of tea. I like a lot of japanese music funnily enough but it's all on the more alt side (check out Tricot, they are amaaaaazing). But I liked the soundtrack for stuff like Eureka Seven etc, and from the look of the game that's what I was expecting. Cool jpop. But this ain't that, no sir. So what we have is lots of music that I don't really appreciate with no readily apparent way of turning it off.

And to make it worse, the music is uncompressed (omg wow!). Don't even get me started on audiophiles and their deviancy. For some reason, those people make me rage - I think it's the elitism that comes with having a hearing superpower "Oh I can totally hear the compression in a 256 mp3, it makes my ears hurt" oh shutthefuckup you pretentious wankers... And on a 16 gig device (yeah I know, get a bigger device), 2 gigs of uncompressed music is too much. And 2 gigs of uncompressed music that I don't even like is making me that much more antagonistic towards it.

So in my angry brain (which is probably more angry than usual due to the looming trauma I'm about to experience with iTUnes), I'm conflating audiophiles who will be sucking this game's teet about the PURE AUDIO QUALITY (much like PS3 people and their audio bullshit which also makes me want a PS3 less) with the SquareEnix weeaboos (you know, those people that buy 6 cd FF soundtracks and make posts about how Celes' theme makes them cry or something --apologies to the many people this may include, feel free to mock my music tastes roundly but you people are odd, go to a gig or something dammit) who will fool suckers like me into thinking the game might have good music.

Ahem.

I really want to make a thread about videogame music and enquiring why so many people overhype it, but I can't think of a way of posing the question in a way that won't offend pretty much everyone, so this post is a good release valve for me. But really my issue comes down to dubious music + waste of space. If the music was in mp3 I probably wouldn't give two shits.

But £15 ain't the end of the world, and I'm determined to play this for a good while longer, Japanese games can often take a while to sink in (like FFT which I hated for the first 20 hours).

There is no barb aimed truthfully at anyone here, I'm just venting.

You hated FFT for 20 hours? Dude, now YOU are on thin ice! :P

No, but seriously, I don't really care about uncompressed either. English isn't my first language, so I also don't really care about the lyrics (I don't really pay attention enough to notice what they are singing about, I always assume it's some silly nonsense anyway). I just like the upbeat music. To be honest though, it takes a lot for me to find a song unbearable to hear, or even only to the point of compromising my experience. It's either I like it or I don't really care about it.

it's probably the closest thing to Pokemon on iOS but that isn't saying much as there's not much else out there.

cave rescue is kind of a mess but it's a pokemon-like and free and sorta fun

Maybe 20 hours is overegging it, but I had to restart that game three times. I was not best pleased by the third time, and I foudn the job system really annoying at many points in the game, and especially at the start.

I see we differ here too, because I tire of music very quickly. Even my favourite songs in the world, even the songs I write myself. I've now heard that woman stop and go THIS IS WAY I AM at least 8 times. It's grating :P

Getting the hang of the combat though, it's not bad once you get a rhythm going.

When you get a bunch of different pins it's really fun to try different combinations. There are a LOT of different pins in the game.

Don't forget to use the subslot command. Very useful.

Trigger Fist is free today.

Not a bad game. Don't see how long I'll play it for but it's free.

I paid for it on launch and regret nothing, it's the best shooter on iOS as they were the first to realise full look axis was balls in a touchscreen.

It's funny too, Sacred Goat mode for example.

I really like the music, and I don't generally like jpop. I find it to be both diverse and interesting, which aren't adjectives I'd use for jpop in general. That said, if I didn't like it, I'm pretty sure I'd bail on the game, because it's constant and very noticeable.

Out of curiosity, do you like the music in Persona 3 or 4?

I love the game too and paid full for it, need to go back and play it more now that the online should be filled with players.

I kinda regret buying (Trigger Fist). I never find anyone online, so that kinda kills a multiplayer focused game for me, even if the AI is good (which it is in Trigger Fist's case).

Buhhh? PuzzleJuice is... that game that is a combination of Spell Tower and Tetris right? You must be thinking of a different game?

The last line in the post I quoted was referring to 10000000. Yeah, PuzzleJuice definitely lasts longer :P

Jedeye, please liveblog more of those lyrics for us, I need the chuckles.

I'm with him on the music in this game, however I enjoyed P3 and P4's music.

Not played the personas although seeing videos it seemed like generic jpop rpg music. So no, I didn't like it :P

As I get them I'll chuck them up!

I must say I share Jedeyes view completely.

Glad it's not just me. tbh my Game music thread might be quite fun if I have the balls to put it up. Controversy!

Do it. Don't forget to pour a little hate on TWEWY's soundtrack. That should be fun.

But on another subject, I remember you enjoy your platformer. Did you try Mikey Shorts? Get it if you didn't, that ought bring me back some of the favor I lost when I recommended the rabbit platformer, haha.

Holy shit man, that game is awwwwwwwesome! I'd seen the name last week but hadn't bought it. Just tore into it now until my eyes were blurry, it's incredible! Perfect controls, such pure platforming, no fucking around at all... it's perfect! New favourite platformer right here.

You are redeemed good sir!

Now I need to wait for my eyes to go back to normal...

You're welcome. :D

It's such an easy game to miss, because from the surface it doesn't look like anything special, so I always make sure to recommend the game. :)

I'm reposting this so that less people waste their time with this game.

Just finished the prologue. I was surprised by how boring the story and characters are. Even more surprising are the controls; instead of a standard virtual d-pad there are 5 buttons (1 in the center)!!! Worst controls I've experienced in an iOS game. The fast automatic battles are a nice addition, but it's a shitty game.

Dragon island blue is alright, it's probably the closest thing to Pokemon on iOS but that isn't saying much as there's not much else out there. There's no time based restrictions like most f2p games so you can play it for a long time without stopping.

The art and monster designs definitely leave something to be desired but it is somewhat addicting, it's closer to dragon quest monsters than Pokemon for me

Thanks - I dig the DQM formula, so it may be right up my alley.

Any comments on Activision Anthology?

$30

Square missed an opportunity to experiment with different price ranges with this one.

Has anyone who was having trouble downloading episode 2 of The Walking Dead been able to get it to work? It still keeps telling me I've lost connection.

I really disliked it on DS-and felt that I was the only one.
I own the game at the behest of a friend who absolutely adores TWEWY as one of best games of all time. I've never even booted it! I don't really like RPGs and the style and theme is not appealing.

Supposedly the game, according to him is utterly mind-blowing, however. I'll get around to trying it one day.

What are some good 2D retroish platformers? Loved Super Quickhook and just grabbed hook worlds. What else should I be looking at? Manos any good?

Don't know if it exactly fits the retroish platformer, but my favorite platformer on iOS is currently Mikey Shorts. Great game - my only complaint is I'm out of levels and challenges :(

Well, wrote a 1 star review for Puzzle Craft and upvoted the other relevant 1 star reviews as well.

I could almost forgive them if it was just a brutal bug and they were doing their best to fix it, but 5,000 coins is an utter slap in the face. Terrible customer practice.

In what way is it terrible... because there's no way that would cover anyone's progress, or because it looks like they're trying to buy people off?

I can't actually remember the coin value of anything, so I have no idea how far that would get anyone.

Because 5,000 coins gets you next to nothing in the game. Buys you maybe 2 buildings, after you've invested hours purchasing dozens of buildings, dozens of citizens, and collecting a ton of food and minerals.

It's essentially saying, "Hey, sorry you lost 75% or more of your progress. Here's enough money to make up about 3% when you start a new game!"

If they really cared about the people who lost their saves, they'd give them enough money to buy almost everything in the vanilla game, and then hope that they stick around for the updates and perhaps purchase more then.

It's a shitty situation for the devs for sure, since there's no clear-cut right way to handle it, but 5,000 coins is essentially a slap in the face.

Okay, I had no idea what 5k bought. For some reason I thought that maybe the houses were around 100-150 each. That it barely gets you two (never mind all the employees and powerups etc.) is REALLY shitty.

I'm even more pissed now, TBH.

Are there any Hero Tower Defense game on iPad?

Like the warcraft 3 mods... I'm craving for a hero tower defense, but don't wanna install WC3 just for that :(

What happened with Puzzle Craft? There was an update and it was corrupting save files?
It only seems to happen once you make decent progress in the game, possibly when you get to a certain level (I'd spent around 12 hours total on it) and when you next open it up, an error appears and your progress has been completely wiped with no way of recovering at all.

Oh, and their way of remunerating people who had issues is giving in-game currency the equivalent of about two hours playtime worth (in terms of trading said currency for buildings they'd earned in the game).

It also wiped any IAP you bought. Their response when mentioning this was "Get a refund from Apple"... and that's it.
