Vita "hacked," (PSP) homebrew on the way (not piracy)

R4 at least fits in the damn slot. You'll never get an adapter like that for Vita (not for SD Micros anyway).

So make an adapter that fits but holds the memory physically outside of the device and looks ugly as fuck.

As of now due to the card situation I won't be buying any more downloadable titles after blob. If it was hacked to use any memory? Would buy about 2-3 other games right away.

Yea, they're hacking the Vita for "homebrew". That's the excuse everyone gives, but I have yet to meet anyone with a modded PSP that used it for that purpose.

I hope this gets squashed by sony really quick.
Sure I loved homebrew on my old PSP, but I don't want the system to be overlooked again.

Or a DS for that matter.

I was hoping 3DS would be cracked open to circumvent region lock, but alas that doesn't seem to happen any time soon.

wow.. i'm sure there is a tanto blade being shipped overnight to whoever was in charge of PSV security. if this is true, the PSV is doomed to piracy

It sounds like a small exploit. Sony can probably shut the hole relatively quickly once they know where the entry point is.

Hopefully all the piracy will destroy Vita sales even more, and Vitas will become dirt cheap, making for a wonderful but inexpensive portable emulation device.

Imagine playing flawless N64 games on the go! Maybe even Dreamcast?

Unfortunately rampant piracy didn't stop the Wii and DS from selling like hotcakes. I hear developers even make some money off of Steam, and that's on the PC for goodness' sake!

Exactly what the Vita needed. Even more reasons to not develop any games for it. Every gamer should get the chance to punch hackers like this.

I like how you guys are acting like this will harm developers view on the PSV....nothing really new A material has been announced in a while, this is a relatively new system.. Things are already getting cancelled, big games are getting rushed ports...

BTW: Homebrew does not equal piracy...just look at Monster Hunter sales.

PSX emulator, SNES emulator, better video player... That's what I used it for. I still bought my games. I would load them onto memory card as they booted faster, took less battery life, and had less noise.

So nice to meet you.

So much wrong on one post.....

I think it sold badly here.

I really hope that, if Vita is hacked, each publisher stop production of every game for PSVita
If you want homebrew on PSVita you'll have just that...

I will take that over the crap scheduled to be released any day. With the exception of Little Big Planet which I have pre-ordered. :-P

Vita will probably get hacked multiple times throughout its lifecycle. A hack like this incident doesn't mean the entire system has been compromised. Sony can still patch the hole(s) with little or no impact.

Now in the worst case, *if* Vita does get rooted, people will probably run Android and their games on it, plus whatever apps and emulators the homebrew developers come up with.

Yeah can't wait to play SMB and Donkey Kong again on the 15th different console I've owned, it will be awesome.

Maybe it will get apps too, as nothing else I use daily has apps.....

Wait....

Shit.

Seriously, you'd have to be a complete and utter moron to want that over potential Gran Turismo, Killzone and all the other awesome NEW game ports we could have.

Hackers should fuck off IMO.

I do. If you ever come to Tokyo, send me a PM and we'll grab a beer.
Won't argue that we're a minority, but we exist :)

IMHO, a more interesting question is what do we/you hope to achieve with this user mode app development capability ? A better web browser ? A better PS Mobile run-time ? PS Home port for Vita ? 8^P
I can't talk for Yifanlu about his plans with his hacks, and there's usually no "common ground" or "consensus" among hackers. I personally would love to see a dreamcast emulator, haven't played ikaruga in a long time... but I'm not sure the Vita has enough horsepower...

Why not port the homebrew apps to PS Mobile as well so we can pay the homebrewers some $$$ ?
I have three answers for that.

First, my own registration for the Beta got rejected, so I basically lost interest at that point.

Second I think is, most people who want those hacks (if we dismiss the piracy bit here) are thinking mostly of emulators, not other types of homebrews. You will never find a snes emulator on Playstation Mobile, so hacks will always be needed at least for that.

Third is, there are lots of succesful stories of programmers going from homebrews to "official", either with the Minis on the PSP, or PSM on the Vita. Simply, you don't hear them bragging too much about how they started as homebrew devs, but I do know quite a few of them personally.

Have a lot of nice time with worthless emulators and crappy homemade free software, you deserve it ^_^

Worthless emulators....

What are you getting at?

Where's my showtime video player. :-)

Seriously, you'd have to be a complete and utter moron to want that over potential Gran Turismo, Killzone and all the other awesome NEW game ports we could have.

Games that would
A.) Never see the light of Day
B.) Games I don't care about

I must be stupid.... Emulators and video support for me!

Hell not even Sony has announced new ports lately.

The PSP can basically emulate everything you need now.
Really don't see the point in adding the vita as well.
Sure there's a bit more power there, but i'll take new games from multiple devlopers over that.

Well, if you like to play free android games on a system that can do Gravity Rush, Uncharted and Wipeout you'll probably do that only...

Worthless... but free! :D

Bah ! Are you able to share more details about your proposal ? Do you know what happens to that Vita Remote Desktop app so far ? I'm very curious about how open this PS Mobile platform really is.

Great ! That's what I wanted to hear.

I can understand the desire to run competitors' emulators on Vita, but I'm not going to comment on it. ^_^

PSP emulation isn't perfect. Neogeo isn't perfect. PSX can have improvements. Dreamcast is now capable...N64 emulator is great... Currently Android/Iphone is not good for that, the controls don't make it ideal.

Say what you want...but I'll take good homebrew over the lack of upcoming content any day.

PS: These imaginary games you are hoping for, were never going to happen... Cry me a river.

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

Retailers will be less inclined to sell vita units as this situation grows, that is my prediction.

You mean the retailers that have been so inclined to store them with an average sales of less than 1 per retailer in the last few months.

Yes, homebrew is the problem. >.>

At least you guys have something else to focus your anger toward.

Aye, some folks, perhaps many people, may not mind Android on Vita at all !

Personally, I think we are just over-reacting.

In the long term, I suspect Sony will continue to evolve the basic/current Vita platform towards (or on top of) other OSes. These hacks may be invaluable to help Sony find existing holes. YifanLu doesn't sound malicious thus far.

As I already said, have a lot of nice time

I realize that Vita has immense homebrew potential but such a news will surely scare off whatever devs that were going to develop games for it. The install base is what, 2.5 million now? So if it gets hacked at this stage, it's pretty much game over for the system. Sony does not have the strong IPs that Nintendo does so they cannot support the system for a long time on their own.

If it gets hacked after three or four years, that's totally fine since, it will have an established userbase that will support it, and fast hardware sales due to the hack will actually prove to be beneficial then.

Sony isn't going to sit quiet though. I think they realize the importance of the system not getting hacked so early (like they pulled some exploitable PSP games from the store in a day). As it is, currently I have no interest in any homebrew, and just want to see some ambitious third-party games.

No Sony's top developers avoid the Vita like the plague... The Sony Developers that release Vita games all get axed...

This is the message you want to send third party developers!

Note: Those third party games weren't coming, with vita's lack of momentum...

At least you guys have something else to focus your anger toward.

This is actually my worst fear if the Vita ever gets pirated: it will give once again an excuse for people to justify the commercial failure of the console.

For the PSP, we've had "piracy ruined the console", and for the Vita, now we're seeing "oh no guys, the console is already not doing great, you are going to make things worse", which will quickly turn into "piracy ruined the vita" in a few years, with everybody dismissing the fact that the vita currently represents less than 1% of the gaming market in numbers of devices, and that nobody cares about it except hackers.

Did you ask them? You're saying that Guerrilla and Media Molecule are about to die?

I think for PSP, piracy did went too far -- especially in Asia. I know people in Asia who pirated entire library of PSP games without paying a single cent. But there were also other reasons causing its relatively low software sales in the west.

It's probably untrue to blame piracy as the sole reason for PSP's performance. At the same time, it's probably too simplistic to exclude piracy completely too.
