Gamer-approved laptop recommendation thread

This laptop has been flirting with me, and it's getting annoying.

I need a new laptop, and I'm doing these mental gymnastics between a competent high-end windows laptop, or go for the Macbook Pro Retina Display

I think the XPS has the 640m in the top models? And I think that's roughly equivalent to the old 540m which is in my sons laptop. It's ok with source games etc, but can struggle with more modern things, even on lower detail settings. And combined with a 1080p screen it'd be even worse.

For gaming I'd try and get a 650m at minimum, but I don't see many compact laptops with that. There was an ASUS ultra book-style one coming soon with an i7 and 650 or 660m - link posted on the last page. Or a MBP etina or non-retina - 15" versions have a 650m.

Thanks you were a huge help.

Also worth thinking how you'll use it. Even a crappy screen is fine for a spot of web browsing or text editing. If you want to photo edit etc maybe you can hook up to an external monitor for less than the cost of upgrading the screen on your laptop (and bigger) or connect to your HDTV for gaming

How are temps on laptops? Should I be comfortable with them getting very warm to the touch, and the exhaust air being hot? That's just how it gets? Presumably they all have the necessary protections in place. Running GPU-z the temp was around 68c on the GPU (just running minecraft lol)

1. Good points on the screen discussion.

2. 68C is an incredibly cool max for the GPU, while gaming. Don't even bat an eye unless it goes above 85C. And the exhaust air being hot is a good thing, because that air would otherwise be staying inside the machine.

What people Google usually recommends to me are both the

HP Envy 15(2012)

Dell XPS(2012)

Between those two, I like the style of the XPS 15 more, but only if you take the one with the 640M GDDR5.

No, actually the GT 640M GDDR5 is over 2x the speed of the GT 540M. It's roughly equivalent to last gen's GTX 560M.

Jack, I wanted to know, are 2GB of VRAM overkill for a resolution of 1080p ?

There is a good XMG laptop for Bla in Germany that costs 1000€ and comes with a 675m.

Don't pay extra for 2GB, but if the GPU comes with it, that's fine.

So K.Jack, real curious to see what you think about the MSI GE60. Main point of attraction for me was squeezing the 660m into a non-bulky frame, which is what I found in most laptops carrying specs like this one.

Wondering what you think of it?

Other than it being a fingerprint magnet, I haven't seen much in the way of negative opinion; this review covers a good range of its pros and cons. The only difference is that one has the 650M, but it's the exact same notebook. Also, check out the Owner's Lounge on NBR.

do u have a link? i only saw this one in my price range

edit:

i think, i found it. this one? what worries me is the i3 :S plus its HDD is only in the 300GB range :(

havent found a better one than the y580 yet. of course im talking about smth with the maximum price of 1000€.

shall i go for the 1080p one or the normal 1366 x 768 when i buy the lenovo? is resolution that important? not sure if i wanna spend 100€ more just for full hd.

there is a full hd one for 999. but for some reasons it only features 4GB of ram instead of 8 like the others.

and one more thing:

shall i go i5 or i7? people say i7 doesnt add up much to the experience.

Lol. I'll get in quick before K.Jack shits on 1366x768 screens :p

The 1080p screen is glorious. I had my concerns, mainly that text and icons would be too small, but windows is set to 'medium' which increases font and icon sizes so it's still readable.

Three main differences to consider - quality, real estate, and gaming. Whther they are important is subjective to you and based on what you need/want

Quality: the 1080p screen is significantly higher quality than the 1366x768 panel. It'll have better colour rendition, and much better off angle viewing - with bad 1366x768 screens you can barely get the entire image clear before the edges start to dim. That might not be important to you if you'll just be using it for web browsing or office stuff. But if you do any photo editing, you'll find it difficult to adjust colours or brightness because the screen will be inaccurate.

Real estate: the 1080p screen lets you fit more stuff on. 1366x768 is ok, but I tend to need most windows maximised or at least fairly large, so I end up switching windows. 1080p let's you more easily have an IM window open next to your browser for instance. Or in Lightroom, the UI takes up much less space, so more is available for my photos which is what I want to concentrate on.

Both of those can be mitigated if you plan to have your laptop hooked up to an external monitor some of the time - it'll be higher res, physically larger and most likely better quality.

Gaming: the 1366x768 screen Is about half the number of pixels as the 1080p screen. So the GPU will work less hard to drive it. Thatll give you higher frame rates, more detail, or more AA. Having said that, the 660m is good enough to play in 1080p at high details in most modern games, and you can always drop the resolution if you want - I find 720p looks ok scaled down.

Overall I'm very glad I took the 1080p screen, but only you can make the cost vs value judgement for you,

Don't worry about the 4GB version, you can easily upgrade the ram. It's strange that Lenovo seem to do different skus even within Europe. Eg in the UK they have two - i5 1366x768, or i7 1080p bluray whizz bang. In Germany they have a TV tuner built in..

I5 vs i7.. Dual core vs quad. Most games don't need more than two cores yet, but they'll probably start to more often going forward. likewise lots of apps don't need more than two cores unless you really do a ton of video encoding. It will future proof you to an extent, but personally I'd think the GPU will run out of gas before lots of games become CPU bound by the i5. If I could have had the 1080p with the i5 I'd have gone for it, but for me it was £150 to get 1080p, bluray and quad core, so a good bump in overall spec for the price.

(can you post a link to the products you are looking at?)

Edit: do Lenovo Germany only offer the lower res screen? Have you looked to see if resellers have other skus? with the two shown on lenovos site, I think I'd get the lower priced i5. €150 is a lot for i7 plus bluray drive

Edit2: lower priced version doesn't have a mSSD for caching, so that'll affect the price too. But you still have the slot so you can add one later if you want

thanks a lot for your nice text! i really appreciate it! guess im going with the full hd version!

i found this one here . it's the 4GB one, but the shop gives u another 8GB for free. what i wanted to ask. which kind of ram can i use for laptops? i tried to look for some but i have no idea if they fit.

anyway, when my salary arrived (i'm a student and i worked during the summer) and this one is still there, i will probably gonna go for that one. but as u said, there are really a shitton of different versions here. and i was confused that one full hd version even offered only 4GB of ram.

My dad got an Asus ZenBook UX31A i5 from his work for good performance by their division in Q2

Is it any good for gaming?

I wouldn't worry about it if they're giving you 12GB total. Nice price on that

90% certain I'm purchasing the IdeaPad Y580 on Friday. Looks like a pretty solid mid-tier gaming laptop. Was thinking about building a desktop, but I'd rather just take a laptop with me to my bros place and play games with him like that than long distance.

I also recently purchased this. Its taking forever to come in, though. I'll post a little review here once I get it, hopefully next week. I'll be testing out GW2, Sleeping Dogs, and Borderlands 2 on it.

Where did you purchase it from? lenovo.com has it priced at $1,099.00. Does that sound about right?

On the look out for a new laptop. I have these pair in mind:

Toshiba P750:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produ...419039|Laptops|14419040.htm#pdpProductReviews

Asus K53SD:

http://www.ebuyer.com/295439-asus-k53sd-laptop-k53sd-sx103v?MID=4358

So, I originally was planning on just wanting a good laptop to play Football Manager on. However, I'm now thinking I'd like to see what Gears of War and Mass Effect are like, as I don't own a 360.

Can both run these titles well do you think? Would it be perhaps being future proof and going with the more expensive Asus?

Thanks in advance.

was about to slag off Argos for anything, but thats an ok price - you can get similar elsewhere. GT540M is ok, and I think thats a sandy bridge i5 (dual core). Same as my Acer I bought last year.

check out the game benchmarks towards the bottom of the page here to see the sort of performance you'd get. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-540M.41715.0.html

forget the second one - GPU is rubbish

edit - list incoming.

Toshiba L850 - ivy bridge core i5, 7670m, £508: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_L850-1EF_1263100.html

or this one for £400? Don't know how the AMD CPU is ranked, but the GPU is roughly on par or slightly above the 540m/630m - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5560G_1258901.html

If you can stretch to another £50, there are more options: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_1206320.html equivalent GPU (630m) but a newer ivy bridge core i5.

or this one with a sandy bridge quad core i7 and 630m: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_1152339.html

GT640m but i3 http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_Ultra_M3-581TG_1215228.html

Thanks for the response. I don't know a great deal about CPUs and GPUs. Just wondering, what makes you say the GPU in the Asus isn't very good?

Thanks.

Yes, I got mine from lenovo's site. I got the one for $999.00 because the 1TB hard drive was slower (although it does have the 32GB SSD to compensate, so its really up to you).

I've seen them on Amazon for around the same price, too, just not the models with 1920x1080 screens...

Thanks.

simplest way is to find out the GPU - in the case of the Asus its a gt610 I think, and then just google it. Most of the time you'll get a notebookcheck web link on the first page of results. Click it and you'll get a summary of the performance of the GPU alongside game benchmarks and comparisons to other GPUs.

GT540M/630M is a good minimum to aim for if you want to game on a laptop. GT640/650/660 even better, and then it starts getting expensive.

HD 4000 benchmarks.

Long story short, it can play games, but shouldn't be considered a card with any true strength or longevity.

So, the HD4000 is worse than my over a year old Mobility HD5650 then? I am surprised, I get far better FPS than that in Skyrim for example. It has 1gig video memory and a core i5, is that the difference? I know dedicated usually beats integrated but I assumed the HD4000 would be on par with a 2 year old card...

That was the name of the site I was on yesterday, however I couldn't remember it. Thanks for that.

So out of the two you recommended:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_1206320.html

and

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_1152339.html

Which would you go for?

its difficult.

Both are similar in spec other than the CPU, HDD and RAM. HDD is 500GB Vs 1TB, both probably enough. RAM is 6 Vs 8GB, 8 probably better but not much in it.

CPU the Acer clearly has the upper hand. Quad core Vs Dual Core. So for day to day computing it should be a bit quicker, but might not make a difference in games.

My kids have an acer aspire (i5 with gt540M) and I have a lenovo Y580. Both have fairly similar build quality, and the keyboards are both fine. The lenovo has a much nicer trackpad though - the Acer is a little too small for my liking.

Head says Acer - the quad core will keep you going for longer before needing to update.

popping in to say i'm loving my ideapad y580. The 1080p screen is great looking (aside from being a bit glossy, some issues with glare), and i have pretty good eyes so the smaller text and stuff doesn't bother me. the gpu can drive most games at native res at acceptable framerates, and the cpu seems fast enough in encoding and threaded applications. i'm fond of the keys and the trackpad, and the laptop itself feels fairly sturdy.

Hmm, how does your 5650M performance compare to the HD 4000 benchmarks Anandtech ran? Depending on the CPU, it seems like the two of them will be equal in some games, with the 5650M edging it out in a few.

Take the Acer. The quad core overrides everything.

only 12 more days till i can order it! i'm stoked!

If you try any games at lower resolutions, let us know your thoughts. I tried 720p for running minecraft with sonic shaders and it looked pretty good (picked a res with a neat multiple of the native res to avoid too many scaling artefacts). Plus if I hook it up to my TV 720p looks pretty nice.

Don't suppose you have sleeping dogs do you?

edit: Just downloaded the demo. at 1080p with most settings on high including AA, I'm getting around 30fps. With AA on normal (so no SSAA), I'm getting around 60fps which seems pretty good.

damn, that sounds crazy for such a "cheap" gaming laptop. i'm stoked.

Once there are a few more y580 owners, it'd be good to pick your brains on getting the best performance out of it. I've read that you want to be in 'dynamic graphics' mode on the power settings (when plugged in and gaming) because that unlocks the turbo boosts on the CPU and GPU. But annoyingly that isn't on the system tray shortcuts, so I'd like to try and adapt one of the other standard modes to match. Super ideally I'd like to have a keyboard shortcut to change power profiles, or even set it somehow when launching a game.

Hey guys, I'm currently in Malaysia and because of my previous situation I thought that a gaming laptop would've been better than buying two desktops. I didn't have a great experience with the m11x r2 last time so I bought the Asus G53SX. It's been doing pretty well for me but I've recently gotten a hand-me down TV and it's about 40+ inches. As a result my games are running in a much higher resolution and my performance has taken a little bit of a hit.

Is there anything I could do to improve it, or am I basically stuck with having to either lower the reso or lower the settings? Thanks GAF!

What GPU? You could try overclocking your GPU but it might only give minor improvements. Your main two options are lowering detail or lowering resolution. On a TV I'd be tempted to try running at 1280x720. TVs will tend to scale that fairly well, and if you're sitting at a reasonable distance because of the much larger screen it'll still look good.

My GPU is a i7-2670QM 2.2GHz. Thanks for the reso suggestion - I'll try it out! I'm getting a bit worried that I won't be able to play Borderlands 2 4 player co-op without having some FPS troubles but I don't mind playing at a lower resolution if it still looks decent.

Right then. Mini-review (read: disjointed ramblings).

I got the 15" Vortex III (which is the Sager NP150) with 8 gig ram, 3610QM and... the 7970M. After talking with PC Specialist, they said if the Enduro problems weren't fixed by the end of my warranty, they'd refund the card and either give me money and 675M or put the money to a discount on the 680M; their customer service is pretty great. Waiting times are pretty long, though- it took around 2 and a half weeks for the laptop to be dispatched.

Basic speakers are... good enough, but aren't going to excite audiophiles. It's a solidly built laptop- it feels like you could drop it down a flight of stairs and it'll still work, though I'm not going to be the one to test it. Keyboard is a little small, and the touch-pad sometimes gets in the way of hitting lower keys- the 17" model would probably be better, but it's no big deal, especially as you can turn the touchpad off if you have an external mouse.

Not really done a benchmark, but it plays console ports at 1920x1080 and max or near it, usually, and The Witcher 2 on High at a decent (though not quite 60) fps. Enduro problems are noticeable, though after having a 4-year old card that only ran above half speed for twenty minutes before throttling I'm perhaps more willing to forgive.

If there's one issue that worries me, it's heat- GPU-Z reported at one stage the temp reaching 99 degrees; it's only done it once, and with a cooling pad it hovers around 70, but it's... problematic. Might also be a problem with GPU-Z, but I always was under the impression it was decently accurate. After 4 laptops in a row with heating problems I'm starting to wonder if I'm cursed or something.

I'd certainly recommend similar builds... without the 7970, or at least until Enduro is fixed (if ever). All my major problems with the laptop basically boil down to that card, which is mostly what I was expecting.

Just ordered this guy.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0082JFDJ4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

41Xu1AutfgL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Screen Size 17.3 inches
Max Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels
Processor 3.3 GHz Core i7-3610QM
RAM 12 GB SO-DIMM
Hard Drive 750.0 GB SATA
Graphics Coprocessor NVIDIA GeForce GTX675M 2GB

$1400. Couldn't pass that up since I really wanted a 675M and MSI with Steelseries seems high quality from reviews. Should be beastly, and I'm not really worried about portability. Any place I'd want to use it will have desks/tables/etc. to set it on.

So much for slim. After not being able to find a slim laptop that would really suit me, I ordered this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Z9WWDW/?tag=neogaf0e-20

ASUS G55VW-ES71

Intel Core i7 3610QM
8 GB RAM
1920x1080 screen
Geforce GTX 660M
500 GB 7200rpm HDD (more on this later)
DVD burner
Borderlands 2 free as part of a nVidia promotion at the time I ordered

Pros:
+ Screen is GORGEOUS and the viewing angle range is good.
+ Extremely quiet and cool. All warm air vents directly out the back and the bottom does not have any heat issues. Played TF2 and Diablo 3 with the laptop on my lap with no issues.
+ Performance is very good. TF2, Diablo 3, Slender, Planetside 2 all run great at 1080p. All maxed except Planetside, which runs at a mix of medium and high settings.
+ Sturdy keyboard. No give, even when gaming.
+ Easy to upgrade. Main HDD bay and 2 empty memory slots are easily accessible. More on this in a sec.
+ Battery life is 3.5 hrs or so. Not bad for a gaming laptop.

Cons (only 1 major):
-- HDD crashed on the second day of ownership. Just outright crashed, streaming sector unreadables in CHKDSK. This was a bummer, but gave me an excuse to go SSD shopping. Intel 520 goes in, fresh install of Win7 and HOLYCOWI'MTOTALLYGOINGSOFAST. Laptop may have attempted to achieve LEO if I didn't hold it down. Long story short: buyer beware on the HDD but if you can handle your own PC work it is easily accessible.
- Sound is good, but there is a weird glitch where the internal subwoofer is not controlled by Windows volume control. It's either 100% or muted. Unsure if a driver issue or pilot error, but I wear headphones and when the headphones are in the subwoofer does turn off.
- It is thick and heavy, the tradeoff of good hardware and cooling. Not laptop with GTX 680 heavy, but it's definitely no ultrabook.

Overall I'd say it's a 7/10. Probably a 9/10 without the HDD issue. Performance wise it's great, it's quiet and heat is not a factor. Would have probably bought the Sony Vaio over this if not for the Vaio's orange screen issues, but I am happy with my purchase.

Edit: WEI is 7.3, being held back at this point by the 660M. It was 5.9 with the HDD in, HDD WEI rating is 7.9(!) with the Intel 520 in. Proc scores 7.6.

So my Lenovo Ideapad Y580 that I ordered on 9/3 that was supposed to ship 2 days ago just had its order status updated as shipping on 9/25 today. Expected arrival 10/2. Well, I will already be at school then and not at the address I had them ship it to. Fucking Lenovo, I didn't know they could be so incompetent when it came to shipping their products.

Anyone know their usual policy for cancelling orders before they ship? Figure I'll just order one on Newegg and get it shipped in like 3 days.

Edit: Actually, I just saw that the Sager NP6350 is now on sale! I will probably just go with that one, as long as I can get it here relatively soon. Anyone know if XoticPC or PowerNotebooks is shipping these already/how fast they usually are?

As a result my games are running in a much higher resolution and my performance has taken a little bit of a hit.

Is there anything I could do to improve it, or am I basically stuck with having to either lower the reso or lower the settings? Thanks GAF!

The i7 is your CPU. The GPU of the G53SX is a GTX 560M. It's meant to be just okay at 1080p, but will require medium setting for a lot of newer games to run ay a consistent 30fps or more. There's nothing you can do about it, other than overclock or lower the settings/resolution.

Anyone know if XoticPC or PowerNotebooks is shipping these already/how fast they usually are?
They aren't shipping until "mid-September".

So there's 2 deals that sound interesting, these end tomorrow (Finland):

1200€ MSI GT70: 3610QM, 670M (3GB), 8GB RAM (1600MHZ), 750GB 7200RPM HDD. (Normal price here is 1500-1700€)

VS

1000€ TOSHIBA QOSMIO: 3210M, 670M (3GB), 6GB RAM (1600MHZ), 750GB 5400RPM HDD. (Normal price here is 1200-1400€)

What kind of FPS would I be looking at with these systems? Main use would be Guild Wars 2 and emulators. I play other random games too but I don't have the need to max out games. Would be nice to play on high though, is it possible with these? 30 fps is fine by me, as long as it doesn't drop below.

And while obviously the first set up is better, is there that much difference between the two in gaming? Not many games use quad core right? If I bought the 1000€ laptop that would leave me money for a SSD.

Is this a good laptop for web surfing, watching videos, music, programming, office 2012 and maybe cs source/civ 5?

I am planning to add an SSD, is there something with the same quality on that price range?

Just ordered this guy.

Screen Size 17.3 inches
Max Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels
Processor 3.3 GHz Core i7-3610QM
RAM 12 GB SO-DIMM
Hard Drive 750.0 GB SATA
Graphics Coprocessor NVIDIA GeForce GTX675M 2GB

$1400. Couldn't pass that up since I really wanted a 675M and MSI with Steelseries seems high quality from reviews. Should be beastly, and I'm not really worried about portability. Any place I'd want to use it will have desks/tables/etc. to set it on.

Got this in today (love you Amazon and your $8.99 overnight Saturday shipping). Very impressed so far. The keyboard and track pad are outstanding, easily the best I've used on a laptop before. The keys are all very solid with a nice separation between them, great for my fat fingered typing. The backlighting on them is super bright and clean, too.

So far just tried a few games my wife also wanted to play like Bejeweled 3 and Lara Croft, and they run without a hitch, as expected. Gonna give it a little heavier workload now with Civ V, Starcraft 2 and Skyrim.

Only negative so far, the display has a fairly noticable "screen door effect," but that seems kind of common with laptop displays.

I thought this would be a great machine and honestly I'm impressed well beyond that. It's pretty stylish for a big unit, the keyboard and trackpad are damn near perfect and presumably it'll run whatever game I throw at it on high. Very highly recommended for $1400.

Civ 5 isn't looking too good:
