Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

how is this the same? I dont get it

Do they? How do I enable it on PS3? Typing on the QWERTY onscreen keyboard takes forever.

It's not exactly the same, but it involves moving the D-pad to the selected group and then tapping the X button the correct number of times. It's kind of like using the keypad on a feature phone and it's much faster than using the QWERTY layout. My guess is that it's also faster than Valve's proposed method.

look forward to the SFF PC build thread soon. Something silent and low power when not gaming (so it can sit in the dashboard and maybe run your minecraft server or whatever), but beefy enough to run games well.

Doesn't even have to be SFF, AV sized would be fine.

I love people digging up obscure examples of where this has happened before. The point is we've had to suffer with virtual keyboards through the Xbox, PS2, 360, PS3 and Wii generations. How is it that Valve gets it right out the gate?

How many times have we had to enter account information or private message someone through XBL/PSN and not once did Sony or MS try to innovate? Instead they release shitty keyboard add-ons.

I think that's the point most are trying to make here. It's obviously been done before but not on this scale.

I don't think Microsoft likes you rebinding that particular button. Or at least it doesn't seem to be a valid bind option in a lot of games. Which is annoying since the button does nothing in Windows except show a very inaccurate battery gauge.

Custom driver would be perfect. If Microsoft wouldn't bitchin' of course

I'm almost positive that a filter driver can do that, which is what I did with the chatpad driver. You can have a driver sit in between the normal driver and the hardware, and have a side channel controlling your driver, allowing you to remap things, disable certain buttons, etc.

Microsoft might have a problem with it and you have to deal with the hassle of custom drivers though.

Here's hoping that this will push more developers to consider more splitscreen support for PCs.

It's been a thorn in my side to have the best-looking, best-running version of a game displayed on my TV, yet I had to switch to an inferior version to play it splitscreen. Didn't happen all that often, admittedly, but when it did, it was frustrating.

I'm using a mATX build as my HTPC right now, but I'm half tempted to make a mini-ITX box, especially with the amazing high end boards out now like the ASUS ROG one:

Finding a decent enough low profile video card is kind of challenging if you want to go LP. And mostly, I'm just scared of killing the stock PSUs that come with mini-ITX cases (I've been using a 1 kilowatt Corsair unit in my main rig, so it's going to be a huge change not to have all that headroom).

This input method is definitely not new.

Durante already posted one of his works on PSP, where this input method was present in lots of homebrews. But I'm trying to find one game that used about the same concept (GRAW 2, I think?) and more importantly, one guy that posted on Reddit a long while ago, claiming having created it, or a least refining it. Only difference was it used two sticks instead of one stick and face buttons, if I recall correctly. But I haven't managed to find it yet. Ring any bells ?

Yep, I was going to post about the Reddit thing. Anyway, here's a video from Killzone doing the same thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuoq__t7NjE

Don't get me wrong - those are hardly just, and are why games like Fez remain unpatched despite a developer willingness to do so.

But they can't go throwing around words like "walled garden" and "openness" a week after launching a giant gatekeeping mechanism like Greenlight. It's outright disingenuous.

Of course the Steam store is a walled garden. Its a walled garden like every store on the planet is a walled garden that only carries what the owners feel like carrying. Steam as a platform is extremely open however letting you add any program you want to steam, giving developers free access to steamworks even if you don't sell your game through Steam, Steam workshop letting users upload their own mods and content to use with games, ect.

Yo, Sega also did this first with Phantasy Star Universe, albeit hilariously awkwardly:

To be fair, all the hubbub about the virtual keyboard aside, I just want Big Picture mode to navigate my library, the store, and maybe Greenlight if that's possible (but I doubt it).

I'm really curious if they've solved the separate game launcher issue or will this just be an annoying issue with some games. Usually, you can add a command line parameter to the shortcut to skip the launcher but that seems like the kind of hassle this feature is trying to remove.

How is it faster? To write the word 'playstation' you would need:

PS: at least 37 inputs (including d-pad movement), of which 24 are button presses.
Valve's: at least 19 inputs, 11 button presses.

does it support xbox chatting keyboard addon?
Windows doesn't support that yet. Or I should say, Microsoft hasn't bothered adding support for it. I think someone here made an driver for it but it doesn't work on the wireless 360 pad.

If someone could get on that and get it working, I'd donate to the cause.

I've been doing some digging, and it sounds like the Sixaxis version works fine on PC, but obviously, no GUI interfaces for PC games are really tailored towards Sixaxis button style. The Sixaxis doesn't have as much developer support (actually none) on PC, and as you can see, the button prompts on BPM are for 360 style.

If you are feeling lazy and don't want to build your own PC, this sucker works pretty well as a 360 replacement:

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51/pd.aspx

I know someone with one and he has it connected to an HDTV. Works perfect and plays most games at max/near-max settings.

A lot (well, several) people here on NeoGAF have one. There's a thread for it and everything. It's my favorite PC since my 1998 Pentium II beast.

I think this looks insanely cool. The old interface was a little too nerdy where as this looks like something designed for the mass market. It might need a little color, though.

Can't wait to try it out and hope PC developers start adding big picture interfaces to their games.

It's a one time $100 fee to prevent troll additions to the Greenlight process.

Based on the number of articles I've read about the topic in the last few days? Yeah, I'd say there's a sizable contingent of people out there disappointed with Valve's decision.

Simple answer, these people are dumb. Really dumb. They complain about a one time $100 fee. Instead, if they weren't dumb, they would think about how badly not having the fee would hurt their chances of getting their games through the Greenlight process. I cant speak for everybody, but I know I wasn't about to waste 1 second of my time wading through hundreds of troll submissions for "Tits: The Game!", Minecraft, HL3, Battlefield 3, etc, ad infinitum just to get to the actual games that are there to be rated and considered for Greenlight.

Im really excited for this and have been begging for information about this for like 6 months now. So today im hitting my check for Steam updates like every 15 mins hoping to somehow get it first :)

On a serious note I do have a real question about Big Picture mode. On my PC I have an mini HDI cable that goes out to a Sony Surround sound system that is current hooked up to my PS3 as well and to turn it to PC I simply change the input on the device and the audio and video become enabled.

On my PC for whatever reason the video plays fine on the TV but the sound wont work r be seen by windows unless I reboot the PC with the Amp enabled to PC mode. I think to use this I will have to turn off PC everytime I want to use it and reboot with my AMP on PC mode.. Wonder if they or anyone knows a way to "force" windows to restart or notice the AMP is on now and use it without a reboot?

Nailed it.

The fee is actually a good thing for serious developers. If the flood of bullshit kept going there would be no Steam users even using Greenlight for voting.

If these developers can't be bothered to spend $100 on marketing then they should just get Flash and put their junk on Newgrounds / Kongregate.

So like....is this a pc or a box like Netflix?

Because I was thinking about investing in HTPC with gaming capabilities.

Yeah.

On a slightly unrelated note if people could upvote Shantae such that with this it has a console release, that's be awesome, ta.

Ooh ooh, can anyone join in with posting images of old circular text entry systems? Here's my submission, Animal Forest on the N64!

Is there going to be a standard QWERTY OSK option? Because I've used the "lotus" style input methods before and I hated them. There's a reason why this has been done before and abandoned. A lot of people don't want to relearn this sort of thing, even if it is faster.
