I think you don't understand how the phone and tablet markets works. Just because I want a 4-5 inch phone doesn't mean a 7-9 inch display mini-tablet fills the void.

At all.
I fully understand how it works. You and I will both agree there is a point of "too big," Apple just may have a different idea of where that point is at.

It was hypothetical, how big is too big for people who think iPhone 5 is too small?

My predictions for the keynote:

Everyone on the internet will be massively disappointed, feign self righteous outrage, and proclaim the fall of Apple.

Everyone in real life (ie. non neckbearded basement dwelling tech geeks) will love the phone and buy the living shit out of it making it the most popular and best selling phone in history.
Grow up.

As for the sales, have any of the individual iPhones broken 100-150 million in sales? I think nokia dumbphones will hold that title for good haha, I wonder what kind of new device could drive such sales in the future. Might be whatever emerges after today's version of the cellphone.

Dude, don't you have to work or anything? I just wake up and check all the Apple feeds I subscribe to and the Apple site quickly before leaving for work. Then I get the details whilst at work and watch the keynote when I get home. It's futile for me to try wait till after work.

I normally start at 9am but on keynote days I just head in around 10am or so. Keynote is normally up by about 7. It finishes by 9, then I get ready / go to work and spend the rest of my work day on the net for the rest. Gotta love IT admin jobs.

Well, it's all relative and varies with everyone, but two clear cut markets and levels of portability break your assumptions that there is some continuum of size that stretches into another market for most. Just because iPhone 5, a phone with a relatively small form factor in the market, is too small, doesn't mean people will jump markets to get something that's much more niche and much less portable.

So what would you do?

Android tablet(thinking Nexus 7) + iPhone 5

or

iPad + Android Phone(Galaxy S3)?

Bold if you just want to use a tablet to surf the web / watch videos.

I would choose the other option if you are really interested in gaming on a tablet.

Can't go wrong either way in terms of the phone choices (assuming the "5" is better than the 4S).

you give to much credit to the masses. People dont give a fuck about apple, they don't have some sort of loyalty to them. If apple misses the mark, either they dont show off something to wow the tech ignorant, or they miss price, then those non neckbeard basement dwellers will gladly switch to a cheaper or more innovative alternative.

Consumers are a fickle bunch, no logo discusses the brand bubble bursting, sony knows first hand that people aren't loyal. People are cheap, and ignorant, they either buy what they're told to buy, or buy the cheapest.

iPad/mini/iPod touch with an android device that tethers for free out of the box. I feel that's the best of both ecosystems, though the nexus 7 is a better choice than any other android tablet.

Just saw this picture on macrumors. Nice comparison:

Neither. Being able to share purchased apps between devices and being able to take a picture on my iPhone and have it show up on the iPad automatically is a big deal for me.

Are they also going to show iPad 3 HD with iPad mini or just the mini this year? I don't think I'm in the market for mini but I'd love iPad 3.

I went iPad + galaxy s2 (s3, galaxy nexus or one x now)

Apple is still ahead of the pack in tablets, the nexus 7 was a step forward but there is still a way to go. In terms of phones, they have been surpassed and there is nothing about the iPhone 5 that we know that puts it ahead of the competition

Maybe just a doubling of horizontal and vertical of whatever it is now? I think that's how they've been doing things.
2560x1600, nice. I'm amazed you can't get a better screen than 1280x800 in the current 13inch mbps.
Well, it would be a truthful name at least.
I cringed when I saw all those people on twitter expressing gratitude for apple delivering 4G to their phones with a software update on at&t earlier this year.

They've been keeping it low just to make the retina one seem more amazing. Or because they knew they couldnt double the resolution of a higher res screen and still keep it cost effective.

I love this imaginary spec race that people on message boards think actually matters. It's cute. Nobody in the real world cares. The next iPhone will outsell everything else on the planet, will have the highest customer satisfaction ratings, legendary build quality, best usability, and best app store by a mile. What else matters? Oh right, it's all about screen size, which defines "surpassed". Please.

iPad + high end android phone. iOS is nice at 9.7" but sub-par at 3.5"
I say the opposite. Nexus 7 and iphone. I feel like the openness of android is benefited more by something closer to a computer/laptop in size.

iOS is good on everything. So iphone. That and the hardware is always top notch, like the camera for instance.

i could appreciate that lol...

the new iphone isn't the "5th iphone" in any way haha whatevs
It will be the 5th unique SoC.

The internal Apple labels for the iPhone always listed the iPhone 3G on the same level as the original iPhone, since it used the same SoC and just added a 3G chip.

iPhone 1,1 = iPhone [620 MHz 1176JZ(F)-S chip]
iPhone 1,2 = iPhone 3G [620 MHz 1176JZ(F)-S chip]
iPhone 2,1 = iPhone 3GS [833 MHz S5PC100 Chip]
iPhone 3,1 = iPhone 4 GSM [1 GHz A4]
iPhone 3,2 = iPhone 4 CDMA [1 GHz A4]
iPhone 4,1 = iPhone 4S [1 GHz A5]
iPhone 5,1 = This iPhone [New SoC]

IMO it's the other way around.

iOS on the iPad could be so much better. It's annoying to me how the menus & the home screen doesn't make use of the iPad's bigger screen size. Very lazy IMO.
Well, you have proper tablet optimized apps as opposed to the lame phone ui-stretched apps that you find on android tablets.

In one of the other threads people laughed and called some of us dumb for saying there was a good chance Apple would call the new iphone the iPhone 5. Now, there is a 5 in that teaser? LOL.
