Fuse (formally OverStrike) Re-Reveal (and Impressions), releasing Q1 2013

Should I be bothered? That is, any word about Move support?

Looking forward to seeing the gameplay trailer.

Pretty unlikely, I'd say. It'd just be extra money spent, and EA doesn't seem at all interested in Move Support *cough Dead Space 3 cough*

Hopefully not. In fact, I think Insomniac wisely said it only wants to pursue 30fps games going forward.

Which games are you referring to?

Probably the new Gears, Army of Two, and Dead Space 3. Also, please quote those images so they aren't so massive ;) A simple edit will do.

Q1? Really? I'll buy it on the cheap when it inevitably bombs hard (no chance with stuff like Gears coming out around the same time)

Insomniac Games doesn't make titles that are 60fps anymore. Instead, they've focused on things like particle effects, higher enemy counter, texture resolution, etc.

It's very difficult to sell humor and gameplay in action stills, wouldn't you agree? How would you propose they do that? Caption them? :P Just wait until you see / play it. It's definitely not standard cover-based co-op that we're used to.

Nice! Veeeeeeery nice. Just one more. A quick one. Weapon Wheel?

Why would EA have ANY say of Move being supported or any other aspect of the game when this is a partners program title?

no, no PC for now. We needed to focus on the two consoles with the new engine, and not worry about all of the configuration options and various hardware combinations for PC at the moment.

Although I'm primarily a console gamer I would strongly support a PC release, even if it means getting another studio like Nixxes to port it. PC games seem to have a much longer tail for sales with Steam being such a strong DD platform. Long after the game releases you could still be seeing good revenue from discounts and 4-packs. PS3 and 360 are near the end of their lifespan so I think a lot of games like Fuse are in danger of falling by the wayside.

Which games are you referring to?

Dead Space 3 and Army of Two. The first one will do well, the second at least has brand awareness, something Fuse has not.

I mean, knowing Insomniac, the game will be good. But it's like we have seen this "The Story of a Videogame failure" movie two dozen times this gen. It's almost too predictable now.

Insomniac games originally unveiled Overstrike at Electronic Arts' E3 2011 press conference. The game's debut trailer, created by animation studio Blur, blended comedy with action. Characters were heavily stylized. Environments were bright and cheerful. Dialogue was campy.

As the game developed, Insomniac says the lighthearted visual tone of Overstrike didn't match what it was ultimately becoming: a mature, coop shooter with a more serious story centered around the Fuse element.

"God dammit."

Until I get some personal hands on time I can't say I care much for anything I am seeing or reading about this. Very generic in appearance and don't see it standing out in the mass amount of other 3rd person shooters. Spec ops was great but nobody even paid attention to it, expect the same of this.

In that way, Fuse is almost a blend of Ratchet's humor and Resistance's seriousness. The things it shares in common with both those games, however, is its sci-fi nature and whirlwind tour through various settings affected by a powerful threat.
In your journeys tracking down Raven, you'll venture all over the world, from a palace in India to Raven's intimidating headquarters in the Swiss Alps.
It's almost got a Bond film quality to it in that regard--its heroes are constantly on the run after an elusive organization operating in numerous parts of the world.

Man, if what you say is true 8byte, then they used the worst possible set of screens to sell this. Its obvious EA wants this to look like a dudebro shooter, and are going to push and sell it that way, regardless of any levels that make it look different.

no, we had great screens which show some of the teamwork/co-op and insanity, but it's hard to show it all without video. We had an awesome trailer, but a rights issue is holding it up, and Keighley has the first exclusive on raw gameplay footage.

So hear we are, with EA working to clear the trailer ASAP.

Abyssmal drop in interest here.
We will evidently see once the trailer has been released, but for now as much I as want to believe that the characters capacities and complementarity is a nice touch, the screens scream generic, boring and bland design-wise.
Just three screens, the game still has indeed a lot to show, but I'm not holding my breath.

Nice! Veeeeeeery nice. Just one more. A quick one. Weapon Wheel?

No weapon wheel, as each character has their primary Fuse weapon.

Each character has their own Fuse weapon (thus giving them their identity / class) and can pick up any secondary weapon (shotgun, pistol, rifle, etc). using the D-Pad allows you to swap weapons. However, all is not lost! Using "Leap" you can swap in and out of any character instantly, thus giving you access to all of their weapons. So, it's kind of a mixture, I guess?

Man, the IG hate is too fucking strong. I'm outta this thread, PM me if you have questions dudes! Not gonna sift through dozens of posts filled with what is basically saying "I only play [insert popular franchise here] and this isn't made by them".
Hate=Disappointment?

Dude did you play R2 Co Op mode? Best FPS Co Op mode ever.

I played the beta, is that the mmo-like thing where enemies take like a million bullets to die?

Looking forward to gameplay. The impressions sound interesting enough, even if the screens leave something to be desired.

"God dammit."

Yeah :(

That whole write-up at the bottom was pretty depressing. The worst quote for me was

Fuse will retain a degree of its original humor, Price promises. He says the campy humor shown in last year's trailer has been replaced with a "more sophisticated, dry wit."

"more, sophisticated, dry wit."

I usually interpret this as jokes about human remains getting on someone's jacket, but I could be wrong.

You're wrong :P At least in the sections I played and footage I saw, there were no dick and fart jokes. I don't really think that's TJ Fixmans shtick, anyway. Follow him on Twitter, you won't regret it. Really funny guy.

When I read about the gameplay, it sounds like a lot of fun. It seems we are getting some crazy weapons to use. But I do think the screen scares me a bit off just because it looks generic. :( I'm going to miss the comic-like art direction

Hopefully it is more Borderlands and less Brute Force.

No, the dry wit was always in the game... but there was some pretty campy/slapsticky humor too that didn't fit as it continued to evolve, so a lot of that continued to get cut and more dry humor took it's place.

The Overstrike CG trailer exhibited some of that dry humor in Dalton's descriptions of everyone.

Way to take that way out of context.

How would you put that in context?

I quoted their entire answer.

Edit:

Oh, I see jstevenson answered in the thread and I didn't notice.

See how much less dumb these answers sound when people don't sugar coat everything?

The gameplay sounds awesome. I have hope for the trailer.

I hope this thing is marketed well though. EA Partners doesn't give me much hope for that though. Syndicate and Crisis 2 say hi.

The launch period is such a horrible choice. Games like God of war are coming out at the time. This game will tank hard. Hope they change it

Well, that, and Ted simply said "the console audience is what we know best". I think that's a far cry from "the PC audience confounds us". ;)

How do you avoid this though? In a day and age where quite literally new big budget games are coming out nearly monthly? Nov-Jan is packed, Feb is usually a dry month for sales, and March hits right around Tax Return time. Push it too far out, and you'll end up in the April - July months where games historically don't sell well. August? Back to school. It's pretty tough to find that "perfect time" to release, especially for a new IP.

Like Jacob spazzing out as he kicked the enemy agent? That was the highlight of the Overstrike reveal to me. I think the initial Overstrike reveal trailer had an overall Evil Dead sort of vibe to it as far as humor goes, but the great thing about Evil Dead... well Army of Darkness... was it wasn't afraid of camp/slapstick.

The story won't be grounded or believable, it will be full of stupid cliches and won't make any sense if you'll think about it for more than two minutes. That's just how it is in shooter games... in most of games. It's better to embrace the gameplay, focus on that and add a simple/atmospheric/funny story that glue the parts together. Serious storylines that suppose to be realistic aren't working for me at all.

Insomniac knows this, not sure what happened
EA happened
.

No, Insomniac happened. This is an EA partners game. Can't blame EA this time.

They need to delay the game ASAP or else it's sent to slaughter. How much a say does a developer has in release date under the EA Partners program?

EA are publishing SimCity and Dead Space 3 in February; they are publishing Crysis 3 and Army of Two 3 in March. The marketing budget will go these games which are mostly internally owned by EA. Fuse will have no backing.

Fuse is next year's Syndicate. Both also had a 4 player co-op experience as the highlight.

I thought people were saying this was going to be an FPS now, oh well. Still looks interesting.

Only Game Informer was mistakenly saying this. It was probably an intern. Despite many people who knew better saying otherwise, most of GAF ignored it and got on the hate train.

Hate=Disappointment?

Yup, you have to care to be able to hate.
All I'm seeing here is disappointement over the design choices that have been made and over the screenshots available.
There is just not enough here to hate. Let's hope for a fucking brilliant trailer.

Nope.

See the thing is, I don't actually think the style, outside of the weapons and perhaps some enemy design, has really changed that much. It's evolved, and it's a more grounded take on where we were. Still a lot of humor, character, development. It's a crazy story that isn't trying to be hyper realistic, just grounded and believable.

Inglorious Bastards is utterly fucking ridiculous, but I believed it.

Not being a cartoon doesn't mean this automatically loses whatever personality people think it had based on a two minute trailer. Don't forget that either. We never saw enough of this game to ostensibly accuse IG of selling out.

That leap feature almost makes it sound like a single player party-based RPG... With guns, explosions and crazy powers. I'm in. Show me the gameplay Geoff.

God of War and Tomb Raider is also due out in March IIRC?

So, yeah perfect time to release this game?

I can't help but think they should have been held back more for a launch title on the next PS/Xbox. New IP, show off the graphics, 4 player co-op, blah blah blah. Nah, too much sense.

Why would EA have ANY say of Move being supported or any other aspect of the game when this is a partners program title?

This. Plus, Insomniac did a great job with the Move implementation in R3.

Not that I feel optimistic (actually the opposite), but the involvement of EA means nothing with regards to Move support.

More likely, is the game coming to the 360 as well that does. I think MS requires "features parity" so maybe adding Move support would force them to add some Kinect support to the 360 version as well, which Insomniac might not want to do.

I seriously think the game should be delayed until August to stand a chance. I fear it won't get the attention it deserves releasing in March with so many other heavy hitters.

I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions, ignoring everything EXCEPT the screens. To me, that's not disappointment. That's simply hating on a product.

The more and more I see people obsessed with graphics and art style, the more I want to refer to THOSE people as casual gamers, because their passion for actually playing something has started to fade, and instead has been replaced by "oh look at the pretty lights!".

You guys are just too negative. Ok, the game looks absolutely generic, but it may be fun, especially with friends around. And if it is, I plan on buying two copies of it once it bombs to 10-15€ to play coop with a friend.

I am super disappointed by the change in art style.

Yeah, Same here. However, the informations look great and sound fun, and impression seem to be very positive. I don't want to judge the game yet, so I will try this game and see if it's fun.

I played the beta, is that the mmo-like thing where enemies take like a million bullets to die?
Yes! (Enemy health was tonned down for release)

Hey JS spill the beans whats the legal issue? A song?
