rFactor 2 Beta Thread: Which will crash more often; it or us?

Hey Luke, i was wondering, do you still have that video I made of the sc.net racing team back in the beta of rFactor 1? I'd love to see it again.

I'm real late to the party, but I'm just getting around to the Brabham BT20. What a love that thing is. Just sublime in every way.

I haven't tried it yet, is it an F1, F2 or F3?

And is anyone else struggling with the Meganes (older ones, not the cup cars) on the Portugal track? On Mills I can easily follow the AI at 100% speed, but on the Portugal track I'm a whole 4 seconds behind them, and my car is all over the place, does the AI tune it's setup??

Found it. Brought back some great memories and also reminded me why it was so important to use replay files from the server for making videos (tons of lag otherwise).

Is anyone else struggling with the Meganes...

Nope. The Meganes are my favorite sim car of all time and I think driving them feels about as natural as breathing. What skill level do you have the AI set at?

100% speed. But as I said I have 0 problems on Mills, or even Malaysia. It's Portugal that gives me problems. The car does feel very natural to drive, but it's like the AI had supernatural grip on Portugal.

For reference, I can easily clock in a 1:10 lap on Mills, and so does the AI, but on Portugal, I struggle to get 1:42, and the AI constantly gets 1:38.

Portugal is the bumpiest of the official ISI tracks so perhaps it's just a matter of setup. My guess is that you probably need more practice because many of those corners require tremendous commitment.

If I have time this weekend, I'll see what I can do and possibly share my setup.

The Formula Two cars are now available to download.

Let 'em break out with the F2s from 1960s and then we'll talk ;)

I love the new F2's. Still hate the 'certain tracks for certain mods' thing though.

I just use all cars & all tracks in the series selection and set the AI cars to match mine.

Can't use it anymore in original rF since I have so many cars and mods that aren't compatible with each other, having crazy multi class trackdays with cars from different eras was fun.

Yeah, that's also what I do now, but I find the system too much of a hassle like it is now.

With a full grid, my FPS is way too low to have a decent race.

Find it a bit odd that I'm not able to max everything in this game. Still has some optimizing to do.

Yep, just double checked, "Sunny", "Overcast", "Raining", "Default", and "Scripted" are the only options I get as far as weather go. No random.

Yep, you're right. I was confusing random time of day with random weather.

It's not that hard to make customized "virtual mods" that cater to your preferences.

What are your system specs?

Random observation: the modern F2 cars have 80-100% better framerate for me than the Megane Trophy.

i5 2500k
AMD HD6850
4GB

So that should be more than enough, yet everytime I do a race with around 20 vehicles it lags.

Not everything in the game is created equal. Lots of variations between modes.

The 60s tracks in particular really want VRAM. If I'm remembering right, Spa uses over 1.2GB and Monza uses 1.3GB with my settings (though they may each need an extra 100MB to that figure).

Is the framerate acceptable but with annoying micro-stutters?

What framerate are you getting (press Ctrl+F to find out)?

Have you updated both rF2 (Build 107) and the Historic mod (v1.1)? The mod update has a large performance increase.

Just did a quick test...

My hardware: 2600K and GTX 460, both with stock settings
Scenario: F2 EVE and F2 Spark, 20 cars, started from 18th on the grid
Framerate: 80fps at the start, 70-120fps throughout the race

Edit #1: oops, just realized that I was running an older build (v101 instead of v107).

Edit #2: 60fps at the start, 70-90fps throughout the race using Build 107.

The F2 feels fantastic! I can't believe there's people on their forums that think it feels horrible. I do get more rattle in my wheel from the FFB tho. I might have to try some of the filtering options but I don't want it to mess up the amazing ffb.

uses 1.9gb vram in 3D surround which is WAY more than iracing does at the same settings (and 2xsgssaa) and i would say iracing has a lot better textures than rf2

F2 cars are really really good, great ffb and sounds and loving the physics

The F2 cars really are great. I did a bunch of offline races at Mid-Ohio last night and had a ball.

@1-D_FTW - Wow at those vram numbers. That's kind of ridiculous, frankly.

I meant the modern F2, everything is up-to-date and the build is a fresh install.

One car at Mills: 35-40FPS
20 car grid at Mills: 17FPS

settings:

So yeah, that's terrible performance.

-edit

Updated my drivers

One car at Mills: 70-80FPS
20 car grid at Mills: 26FPS

Still quite low for a full grid.

Is there a list of mods released for rFactor 2 anywhere?

I've just bought a licence and I've downloaded the mods listed here: http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/1396 - are there any others I should be downloading?

Cheers.

For tracks, the Virtua_LM conversions are definitely worth it.
Sebring: http://www.virtualr.net/virtua_lm-sebring-for-rfactor-2-released
Mid-Ohio: http://www.virtualr.net/mid-ohio-for-rfactor-2-beta-released

There's also Croft:

Cheers Dilly. I had downloaded both VLM tracks at the time I posted but the Croft track is new to me! I was expecting the installation of mods to be something of a ball-ache but it has been very easy.

I was expecting rF2 to look shite given what I've read elsewhere but it doesn't - it's no pCARS but it doesn't resemble Stunt Car Racer for the C64 either 8)

Now all I need to do is get rid of the horrible rattling noise coming from my G27 that I get from no other game...

Yeah, I only noticed that the Croft track was released when I was searching the links!

The game certainly doesn't look bad, but only a bit inconsistent in places. I also have the rattling issue though, forgot what value to change to make it better.

I've been keeping a running list in the second post.

... forgot what value to change to make it better.

To fix the FFB rattle problem – Link

If you are experiencing a strong noise/rattle with your controller, such as the G25/G27, you can try increasing this value in your Userdata/player controller.ini file (if you saved your own profile you would have to change it there as well):

Steering torque filter="0"
The range is from 0 to 32

This will filter the FFB effect over a series of frames, which will smooth out the feedback and reduce the rattle. Please note that as you increase this value the FFB may start to feel a bit "spongy" or "numb" and that it will increase latency.

The reason you don't feel/hear this rattle in many other sims is because they by default provide some filtering. By default we do not.

The value you set this to will be down to personal preference. If it feels good to you, and the rattle/noise is acceptable, then go for it. We did some testing locally and came up with some different values.

One of our internal testers felt 4 was good.
Luc settled on a value of 8. He felt any higher felt to numb for him.
I personally like 16. I could still feel the car, catch it when it got loose, it didn't affect my lap times at all.

So, give this a try and see if you can find something acceptable...

Edit: Please note this is not a permanent solution, but hopefully will get you to something acceptable for the time being.

/\/\/\/\

Yeah. I've posted my settings before, but 8 is definitely what I've changed mine too. Experimented with a number of different ones and felt that was the best balance.

It might still make some noise, but with my headphones, I can't hear it.

Also should note that it obviously changes with each profile. If you change those settings for the G27, and then run a custom wheel profile named "Bob", it'll obviously revert to default settings. So you need to change those settings in the "Bob" wheel profile.

No way to save between sessions?

They absolutely need to add that feature, I don't have enough free time to do a 1 hour practice, 45 mins qualy and 2 hours race all in one go.

Think they've been posted before, but I finally got around to downloading them. Nice! Mid-Ohio and the F2 is some sweet driving.

Default setup on the F2 at Mid Ohio wasn't ideal, had trouble with some of the bumps so I had to be pretty careful with the throttle.
