Put it in top down, that way it's already properly aligned to your hand when you go to take it out. Putting the headphone jack on top is the awkward orientation.

I've never used a Nano but isn't it a grid of options, song selection and transport controls? What interface gains are we getting for something with limited functionality? I had held off of the last Nano thinking it was going to be updated. I loved the form factor.

Headphone jack on the bottom is so much better. You put it in your pocket upside-down, so when you grab it, you don't have to turn it around. When listening to music and texting, you don't have that stupid cord swinging around either in front or behind your phone. I see almost no benefit to having it on top.
