FTL: a game about managing a spaceship in an infinite galaxy

Phase Shift and Tactical Approach work. Bird of Prey seems the most difficult to me, best bet would probably be to try to get an unshield scout early on, but you'd still probably need to pick up the stealth weapons augment for it to count.

How/where did you get the one where you need to be cloaked for 9 damage? What did you do?

Cloaked through the bosses phase 3 super attack. Most smaller ships probably won't be able to fire a 9 damage volley. Possibly something with a Burst Laser Mk III and Heavy Laser Mk II and throw in a missile just to be sure.

yeah, that's what I did. Just didn't like it, takes too much micro with the fast firing ion cannon and it made repairing the ship/keeping crew alive a pain. I was glad it died relatively soon.
I think autofire means all powered-up weapons keep firing at the same targets, as mentioned...but one thing I forgot to mention is that if you DON'T want to use autofire, you can still use hotkeys. Press 2, mouse click should work if your ion cannon is in slot 2, for instance. I think you can use that as soon as your weapon fires, and then once it finishes charging it will fire again. But of course that is more macro than autofire.

Loving the game, but boy some times the RNG seems stacked against you! I've played a dozen or more times by now, and I don't think I've EVER tried to help with an away team and not lost a crew member. I think the next game I'm ignoring them all, every man for himself :)
I've kind of become a heartless captain because of that. I hardly ever send the crew to help people since it seems the chances of losing people are incredibly high compared to the chances of low rewards.

I seem to be getting worse as time goes on. Must be just a shitty luck streak. My last game was ruined by 3 mantis boarders jumping on my ship in the second or third area. I vented the ship and ran my ship's rear people to the medic bay but they manage d to destroy the weapons system before they ran to the medic bay. Thanks to the nebula I couldn't see what they were up too till too late.
I could be wrong, but I -think- that a red fist icon will appear above the system or subsystem that is currently being sabotaged, even if your sensor systems are down. That might at least let you know where they are. Also if you have a slug crew member, I think you'll see red dots where the enemies are.

On the kestrel I fly with the back of the ship open and also the whole middle section of the ship wide open.

Boarders take quite a bit of damage in the airless sections while trying to get through other doors and I get to move my crew quickly around and open/shut doors.
You are a clever person. D:

I don't understand the subsystems one... do you have to upgrade only the subsystems all the way or get a full weapon/drone/augment loadout?
You don't need to upgrade the subsystems, and I don't think you need augments. You just need one of each system/subsystem, such as drones, stealth, teleporter (actually maybe that's all the extra systems that aren't on the kestrel).

Whoa. Bought this yesterday, made it to "the end" on my first play only to be decimated by the boss' 2nd form. I maxed out shields and engine, what did I do wrong? :(

Not good enough weapons/drones/anti boss measures.

in win7 its documents\my games\fasterthanlight

a save file only appears if you save and quit out of the game though

And you cant do that to save/reload after getting quests. Those disappear after reloading.

I think that's in a separate file. there's a prof.sav in there

I saved after getting a quest and came back and I still had a quest marker on the screen, I failed it though

Weird, it disappeared for me.

The artillery beam (unique weapon for an unlocked ship) is funky.

It is nothing like that and I don't know why they said.

Think that was me, and all I said was that it's addictive as hell. I haven't been this addicted to a game since GDS. Its that same type of addiction where I feel like I should stop and play something else but every time I quit the game I just open it back up again.

I mean it's not similar to game dev story in any way other than that

I got just destroyed on my second jump a couple of runs ago lol. Like, jump one to a store, picked up a crew member, then second jump was near a star and I had my O2, engines and weapons knocked out before I could do much. Then the fire was spreading and it was GG.

Last playthrough I did unlock the stealth ship so that was cool. I also got a crystal crew member by having some scientists check out a cocoon I found but the ship died not long after so I don't think it unlocked anything.

I've only got that stupid Engi ship..... I don't know how to get anything else... But I did manage to get that heal the Kessler from 1 hp achievement.

This is bullshit. Getting invaded by 4 mantis in the second sector is not fun :(
It took me a while to figure out that it's a really bad idea to destroy their teleporter. Because sometimes when other systems of their ships are really damaged they will beam back.

Landed at a station too close to the sun, enemy warps out after taking out my oxygen systems and engine. Those two dudes kept running to and from med bay but never made any progress. :(

Okay, that makes more sense.

I don't understand the second achievement for the zoltan cruiser. What does "have 29 power in systems at the same time" mean?

Have 29 active green bars. Subsystems on the right-hand side probably don't count (because they don't affect your supply), so basically upgrading any systems, power capacity. Zoltans are the green dudes that provide 1-power to the room they're in, right?

Have every system and subsystem installed simultaneously ?

Probably buy them.

ohh 25 bars of power + 4 from the crew. yeesh that's gonna be pricey to get the bars and the slots in the systems. I've been playing on easy mode, which I kind of like...is the only difference in the amount of scrap you get? Seems like that should be the reward for hard mode and the enemies should just be easier. Going back to normal just means I have a less badass ship, which is the whole point of the game.

5 base ships so far, for which I unlocked 3 "Layout B". 8/18 ships unlocked I guess.

I wonder if they'll ever put out cheat codes or anything like that. Would be fun to do some runs where you're loaded up from the start or invincible/etc.

EDIT: and to complete my blasphemous thoughts - they should release an iPad version, too. :)

I guess some of those ships might be already some kind of "cheat code" since they can make the game easier than the standard ship. Got to unlock them first though.

I managed to unlock the Stealth Cruiser after zerg rushing the fleeing rebel ship with my crew! Except... it seems kind of sucky? At least if you don't get lucky on finding upgrades.

Holy shit this game is so great. I just managed to get to sector 5 without buying upgrades for my reactor and did EVERYTHING with 5 base energy. Woaaaah. Its so amazing how many things work in this game.

My least favourite ship so far too. You are super vulnerable. I still sort of managed to get through to sector 8 with it after a few tries, but nooo way that I could have beaten the boss with it. You simply take too much damage/need too much repair in the first half of the game.

Edit: Selling the platinum crating to get shields in the first sector helps immensely though.

You can avoid the first volley from the enemy, but after that you're guaranteed to take hits. Blah. Worst part is that my crystal guy got killed during the fight and two sectors later I came across the rock homeworlds.

I'll stick with the Kestrel and Engi ships. Both are pretty awesome.

So, this game looks interesting to me, but I can't say I've ever played a game like it, could it be compared to anything else? Would someone new to this kind of game like myself enjoy it?

Played any roguelikes? Can you see yourself playing games to unlock classes for more replayvalue?

From the impressions here, I'd say the vast majority of people like the game, so chances are good you might too.

Reading this might help too. Wrote that up to describe the game for another Gaffer. If you dont dislike what you read/see, I dont think you'll go wrong.

Eff the final stage - I can barely scratch it. I tried beaming some drones onto the ship but that was no good. I had full engines and full shield going into the fight but I knew damage was going to be my Achilles heel.

It's weird but probably my favourite thing is when the ship is half dead and engulfed in flames and you have 2-3 crew left after the fight. Trying to figure out how to save the ship is about the most fun I have, running guys from medbay with 0 oxygen trying to get the O2 going and having to make trips while judging how much they can do before dying.

My last playthrough ended with one of those, and it was fantastic. Only two rooms on my ship weren't on fire (O2 room, Bridge). So I opened all the doors. Fires went out, but damaged my door control system so I couldn't close the airlocks to re-o2 the ship. I had only 2 crew left (both in the bridge), and both were damaged. They didn't survive the attempt to fix the door control, which is what I decided my best option was.
