Why is it not okay to like David Finch and Jim Lee? Is it because they are hyped up artist or something?

I am not an art expert, but I enjoy their occasional story arcs they are able to complete.

The problem with David Finch is he's the Gardenburger Jim Lee.

Jim Lee exists, and is a far more competent storyteller. Lee has a grasp the medium Finch lacks in his impulse to cross hatch the shit out of everything on the page.

I've read several books by Finch and they range from mediocre (Avengers Disassembled) to wildly incompetent (Moon Knight).

To be fair Finch isn't just a Lee wanna-be. He's the Lee Silvestri CHUD Baby. :X

The good news is if you can't get enough of that art style, there's a massive catalogue of Image titles from the 90's that will keep you very, very happy for years to come.

I remember being all over that stuff in high school when I started reading comics in the mid 90s. I probably still have a run of Ascension rotting in a long box somewhere. I also remember thinking Land was awesome a couple of years later on Sojourn. At that same time, I remember not really liking the art of people like Michael Lark, who I now think are clearly more talented sequential artists. It takes awhile to appreciate good story-telling.

EDIT: I can't hate David Finch too much though. He was a local boy from Lasalle, ON, about 15km from where I grew up.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a cock in that regard.

A lot of artists start out aping popular styles, be it through necessity or the desire for quick & easy recognition. Thing is they will all reach a point where they cast off that false skin and walk on their own feet - Mike Deodato was a hard Jim Lee clone in the 90's, but now he's his own beast. Bryan Hitch was a straight up Alan Davis clone. Alan Davis was biting from Neal Adams. Nick Bradshaw is biting down hard on some Arthur Adams. Arthur Adams was a Michael Golden clone. So on and so forth. . .

I'll give you shit for wearing your influences on your sleeve, but if you surpass those influences and speak with your own voice as an artist - that's what I want to see.

I've done this with Japanese comics. Long before fan translations became prolific there were, are, artists working over there that are just amazing.

I mean that makes sense when you look back, they knew that they were going to do this it's just that AvX feels like it could have used a bit more time to just hash out the details and the like. It just feels like the execution could be a bit better is all.

I really liked the first two arcs of the story that are included, #82-93. After that i thought it got too glum and boring for far too long.

I would not say that far back, maybe X-men Second Coming. I will say that they are planning a Ultron War hopefully about 3-4 years after this relaunch, or maybe when the next Avengers movie comes out. I think Hickman will have free reign on that.

MF: The Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway stuff with Buscema and Buckler; Byrne, of course; Walter Simonson's run (which I realize I've subconsciously homage somewhat); Waid and Ringo, of course; I think Millar and Hitch's bit gets maligned unfairly sometimes but I love how assertive it is from jump street; and, look, I'm friends with the guys and obviously on the company payroll and all that but I swear, we're going to look back on now as being a time when Jon's F4/FF and Gillen's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY were being published at the same time with awe and wonder, and demand that somebody, somewhere, answer why so much attention was being paid to so much mediocre garbage.

You know, I've ostensibly read it three times (once partway as it was coming out when I discovered it, once again when the series was almost finished so I could read it all through and then once again recently when I rebought the last trade to replace the floppies) and it was only on the third read that it all clicked properly for me and I really understood the whole Ambrose plot. Where before I had found the last issue to be a bit flat, when you read the whole thing together it's much tighter and more cohesive than I remember. It's really one of the greatest SF stories I've ever read.

It is definitely a series that gets better with multiple readings, for sure. It's easily one of my favorite comic book series of all times, and one I initially got into because I love Cassaday's art. I probably reread it once a year or so.

Oh my lumptious shared interest book readers, why doesn't anyone talk about the sheer awesomeness of Incognito by Brubaker and Sean P. It's basically begging for a movie adaption.

When you read it, you'll see why. Also Sleeper and Criminal. Brubaker is basically the American version of Alan Moore.

Incognito is one of my favorite comics. I think almost everyone here likes Brubaker and Phillips.

Interestingly enough, I was listening to the comedy station here in Austin (I imagine it's national, but I don't really know, we just got it some months ago) and in between clips of stand up, the DJ just started pimping Ed Brubaker and specifically, Incognito. It was just kind of weird but really awesome. Her main reason for trying to get people into comics was that its a lot like being into stand up in that you find some really great stuff but only like 200 other people are into it.
