I saw a really cute girl with a Chicago Comic Con sticker on her car. She also had a "In case of zombie apocalypse follow me" with a chainsaw next to it and another space man line drawing. I had to think it was her sister's car but maybe there are super hot girl nerds out there.

This is a trap.

You think, "Hey here's a cute girl into the same stuff I'm into."

Then she comes at you with "Gambit is my favorite character and David Finch is the best artist ever!"

My inner Ike Turner couldn't be suppressed. >:|

Why is it not okay to like David Finch and Jim Lee? Is it because they are hyped up artist or something?

I am not an art expert, but I enjoy their occasional story arcs they are able to complete.

The problem with David Finch is he's the Gardenburger Jim Lee.

Jim Lee exists, and is a far more competent storyteller. Lee has a grasp the medium Finch lacks in his impulse to cross hatch the shit out of everything on the page.

I've read several books by Finch and they range from mediocre (Avengers Disassembled) to wildly incompetent (Moon Knight).

To be fair Finch isn't just a Lee wanna-be. He's the Lee Silvestri CHUD Baby. :X

The good news is if you can't get enough of that art style, there's a massive catalogue of Image titles from the 90's that will keep you very, very happy for years to come. :P

There is something about the David Finches and Greg Lands of the world that are really appealing when you start reading comics. I remember being all over that stuff in high school when I started reading comics in the mid 90s. I probably still have a run of Ascension rotting in a long box somewhere. I also remember thinking Land was awesome a couple of years later on Sojourn. At that same time, I remember not really liking the art of people like Michael Lark, who I now think are clearly more talented sequential artists. It takes awhile to appreciate good story-telling.

EDIT: I can't hate David Finch too much though. He was a local boy from Lasalle, ON, about 15km from where I grew up.

if david finch had hit it big in 1991 where would he have ranked among the image artists?

feel free to include non founders like dale keown and sam keith

I like him better than Liefeld, Valentino, and modern day Portacio.

Well, to be fair Greg Land seems to have gotten worse. He wasn't ever on Michael Lark's level though.

I'll let you in on a secret: Good looking people like the same kind of stuff we do and it hurts their feelings when we assume they don't have any real hobbies or likes based on their looks and perceived shallowness.

On the same level as Roger Cruz.

Yeah, it's easier for kids to appreciate Michael Bay or Zack Snyder instead of Francis Ford Coppola or Stanley Kubrick starting out. :P

Lets see Finch lapse into a diabetic coma and have to re-learn how to draw from scratch before we go crazy now. ;)

So, where does Frank Quietly rank on the slap fight? I enjoyed his art so much that he's the first artist I bought books for. (As opposed to stories, characters, etc)

yeah its a shame what happened to him glad to see him come back from it though, he was on a tear on uncanny xmen back in the day, a classic run.

At least he's better than Fabio Laguna....or is he?

Brain has no recollection of Laguna. :X

Quietly?

Geof Darrow is still working. I'm good. ^_^

He's definitely not the same, but he's got guts and determination that counts for something. I'll at least flip through his new book when it releases.

I can see that David Finch is influenced by others but that just means he's like most artist. Although with the storytelling aspect I can see what you mean. I started reading comics with the Ultimate Universe, so my first experience with artist were Bagley, Kubert and Hitch. Then I started to get into the main Marvel U with New Avengers and from there it went on with Finch, McNiven, and Deodato, also the first Batman arc I read was Jim Lee. BUT now I've learned to love most artist. I also appreciate all the hard work they put into the medium.

Also excited to see your work TTOB, I hope you make a comeback with those Sketch cards :D

Slightly OT: but do some of you guys pick up any books purely due to artist?

Im a huge fan of Olivier Coipel (House of M, Siege, Thor) and I haven't picked up anything of AvsX except for the books he's penciled.

Anyone else do this?

Yeah, I'm a bit of a cock in that regard.

A lot of artists start out aping popular styles, be it through necessity or the desire for quick & easy recognition. Thing is they will all reach a point where they cast off that false skin and walk on their own feet - Mike Deodato was a hard Jim Lee clone in the 90's, but now he's his own beast. Bryan Hitch was a straight up Alan Davis clone. Alan Davis was biting from Neal Adams. Nick Bradshaw is biting down hard on some Arthur Adams. Arthur Adams was a Michael Golden clone. So on and so forth. . .

I'll give you shit for wearing your influences on your sleeve, but if you surpass those influences and speak with your own voice as an artist - that's what I want to see.

Thanks man. I suck.

Once I get this monkey off my back, I'd like to get caught up on the commission requests people have pending. I haven't forgotten. Just producing 50 inked illustrations in a week is tough as hell with a day job that insists on you coming in early. >:O

I'm a bad person. I'm like a sponge that soaks up all the shit of the work day that doesn't get wrung out, so I'll come home in a bad mood and that just ruins everything else.

Three illustrations away from inking the remaining 17. D:

Hope I can get to bed before 4AM. BARF!

I've done this with Japanese comics. Long before fan translations became prolific there were, are, artists working over there that are just amazing.

I do it for John Romita jr. He's got a habit of taking any job regardless of quality though :x

Good: I saved $24

Bad: I saved $24 by trying to buy Sixth Gun on comixology's sale 40 minutes after it ended because i thought it ended at midnight, not 11pm.

:O Maybe there will be an omni one day :P

Any of you guys following AvsX? Just finished issue 11. Pretty earth shattering developments but I'm still not sure on this storyline.

It's a cool idea, it just needed to be plotted out better. It kind of feels like they just kind of threw it together at the last minute.

Nah brah this was plotted over several writer summits and all stories since NuMarvel have been leading to this.

I mean that makes sense when you look back, they knew that they were going to do this it's just that AvX feels like it could have used a bit more time to just hash out the details and the like. It just feels like the execution could be a bit better is all.

Comixology Marvel sale:

Brubaker's Daredevil up to a point towards the end with the Lady Bullseye arc.

I really liked the first two arcs of the story that are included, #82-93. After that i thought it got too glum and boring for far too long.

Great art too!

I can definitely see this having been planned all the way back to Avengers Dissassembled.

I would not say that far back, maybe X-men Second Coming. I will say that they are planning a Ultron War hopefully about 3-4 years after this relaunch, or maybe when the next Avengers movie comes out. I think Hickman will have free reign on that.

MF: The Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway stuff with Buscema and Buckler; Byrne, of course; Walter Simonson's run (which I realize I've subconsciously homage somewhat); Waid and Ringo, of course; I think Millar and Hitch's bit gets maligned unfairly sometimes but I love how assertive it is from jump street; and, look, I'm friends with the guys and obviously on the company payroll and all that but I swear, we're going to look back on now as being a time when Jon's F4/FF and Gillen's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY were being published at the same time with awe and wonder, and demand that somebody, somewhere, answer why so much attention was being paid to so much mediocre garbage.
AvX diss?

When the fuck does Shaolin Cowboy come back? : (

He was supposed to bring it back this year. There's still a few months in the year, so maybe it's still possible.

Sadly I was too busy talking to him and his daughter about their work on Speed Racer and living abroad at Heroes Con to delve into his future comic work. Derp derp derp!

And that's a wrap for me.

Saturday: Inked 13 images, took them with me to the bar like some freak; but getting out of the house kept it lively.

Today: Pencilled 17 pin-ups. Inked 7.

Total for the weekend: 20 inked images / 10 pencilled.

Hitting the sack and finishing the last batch in the morning. I think this is the first time I've drawn so much my arm is tired! Well, maybe the first time in a long time. Not since I was trying to get crapped published. . . (aim low, succeed - put it under your belt and be lazy).

What am I doing?! @_@

Any good comic book websites that can ship internationally? I remember being informed of some of them thru this thread but I forgot to favourite/bookmark them.

So uh, how about Planetary? Great series or greatest series?

One of the greatest sure.

You know, I've ostensibly read it three times (once partway as it was coming out when I discovered it, once again when the series was almost finished so I could read it all through and then once again recently when I rebought the last trade to replace the floppies) and it was only on the third read that it all clicked properly for me and I really understood the whole Ambrose plot. Where before I had found the last issue to be a bit flat, when you read the whole thing together it's much tighter and more cohesive than I remember. It's really one of the greatest SF stories I've ever read.

It is definitely a series that gets better with multiple readings, for sure. It's easily one of my favorite comic book series of all times, and one I initially got into because I love Cassaday's art. I probably reread it once a year or so.

Are you looking for single issues or TPB/Hardcover?

Issues: http://www.midtowncomics.com/ or http://www.tfaw.com/
TFAW has best shipping price, but Midtown has a bigger discount if you pre-order 3 months in advance.

Collections I just get them from Amazon UK or Bookdepository, sometimes checking TFAW if it's out of stock in those places.

Anyone went to the Montreal Comic Con? It was awesome! I was there on Saturday and Sunday, I bought a boatload of old Punisher comics, spoke to Tom Savini, enjoyed the babes; and met some awesome artists! I'll post pics of my loot tomorrow!
I was thinking of going but my friend tweeted that it was freaking packed at the box office in the early morning. Do post pictures!

Oh my lumptious shared interest book readers, why doesn't anyone talk about the sheer awesomeness of Incognito by Brubaker and Sean P. It's basically begging for a movie adaption.

When you read it, you'll see why. Also Sleeper and Criminal. Brubaker is basically the American version of Alan Moore.

Incognito is one of my favorite comics. I think almost everyone here likes Brubaker and Phillips.

Interestingly enough, I was listening to the comedy station here in Austin (I imagine it's national, but I don't really know, we just got it some months ago) and in between clips of stand up, the DJ just started pimping Ed Brubaker and specifically, Incognito. It was just kind of weird but really awesome. Her main reason for trying to get people into comics was that its a lot like being into stand up in that you find some really great stuff but only like 200 other people are into it.

Comixology has a 'Danger Girl' sale on-going for today only. Worth looking into? I am vaguely familiar with the title but I haven't read anything of it.
