Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch to release on iOS later this week

I didn't even consider that that could happen. What about the voices?

That, I dont know princess. Will you be getting this?

EDIT: From what the dev said, the soundtrack (including music and voices) are "remastered". So Im guessing the whole soundtrack is from the PSP version. Guessing though.

Weren't they also considering releasing the Sega CD version for iOS too? I remember hearing that both versions were coming to iOS.

I was considering it, but my enthusiasm for it depends on what they've done for the voice acting.

Yea they mentioned remastered soundtrack, including voices. As far as I know, the only remastered soundtrack for this game is the PSP version, and the PSX version to an extent? Seeing as Vic Ireland is a notorious dick about the PSX version's voices, Im guessing its all PSP.

What about it?

I dont like them.

I dont like them.

...any reason why? I'm not familiar with the series.

Yup, it's the PSP soundtrack. That's disappointing.

I don't know what the cost would've been for the developer but I would've loved a choice between the three. As for the VO, I'm not sure if it's new or from the PSP revision. I stopped playing fairly early on because of the music muting between map switches really bugged the crap out of me. It's weird how something like that can impact your enjoyment of a game.

Oh well, I get to play Lunar PS1 with the soundtrack I never got to hear.

Edit:

PSP VO, as well...

If you heard Yuri Lowenthal, it's the PSP voices.

Well, if that's what it takes to protect the series in whatever small way I can, so be it. I'm fine helping, consulting and working *with* other parties who what to bring it forward, respecting the universe, but I'm not going to participate in diminishing the series.

Each release since ours has sold much less and been a diminished version of what we did. So we did something right, and I will continue to protect it as much as possible, even if that makes be a me a versatile, spongy appendage in your mind.

You have always been strongly opinionated, and unafraid to give those opinions, so I'm sure you can understand why you might come off to some as having a bit of an ego or as a "spongy appendage" as you so eloquently put it.

Regardless, I do appreciate the work you did with this series in particular as well as the other games you have worked on. I still play through my PS1 versions occasionally, and they are actually one of the reasons I insist on keeping a PS2 and my backwards compatible PS3.

Anyways, on topic. How does the game actually play? I'll probably buy anyways, but I am curious for initial impressions on the "touchiness" of it. Touch games aren't my bag, but I can imagine it working well for this game.

edit: Also, how does it look? Are those old screenshots accurate? Or any improvement since then?

I should add that the horror of their webpage gives me little hope about their tech abilities. Also, they are from Tallahassee.

Honestly Vic, I love Lunar so much but I think the series' time has just passed ; ; The games remain as classic as ever but these rereleases/ updates have not had strong release on any popular platform since PSX (PSP and GBA....). I think that may be more of an indication of lower sales than the releases themselves (for the record, I really did love the graphics of the PSP - gave the game a more modern charm at the unfortunate cost of large dungeons). Perhaps this IoS release and maybe a PSN port (....?) may be the answer to reviving interest in the series.

The first time I turn out Lunar Remake on the PSP, everything is fine and dandy. The graphics are beautiful.

Then I hear Yuri Lowenthall's voice as Alex. I immediately turn it off and never play it again.

I feel sick hearing his voice, I don't know why. Small doses are fine (like in Mass Effect/Dragon Age) but for long/large exposure? Hell no thank you.

Given that Studio Alex was killed and they are/were the heart of LUNAR, it's more about protecting the legacy at this point. I can't see the series progressing meaningfully without SA's involvement.

And yes, we are still, still, still, working on getting the PS1 version to PSN. Promise.

Who developed that abysmal Dragon Song Lunar game for the GBA btw? Ugh....

I was really excited about this release, but after playing it for a little while, it seems to be even worse than the PSP version.

I will always cherish my original Sega CD and Playstation copies.

I'm fine with the label if that's what someone thinks, they're entitled to that. But I'm not shy about defending my point of view, and I love a game debate, whether it's a game I've worked on or not. :)

This makes me really happy. :)

I know for a fact you are the asshole responsible for the fact that any bum off the street can call something a collector's edition and I will buy it!

Will probably also buy PS1 port, especially if I will ever be able to play it on Vita. But that will probably be a few more years down the road.

Deflating...

It's good to get your side. See, what I said was just a projection of everything I've heard of you. Sometimes speaking out to defend yourself is worth changing fan's minds. If you would've allowed the original soundtrack for the PSP version, I would've bought it. That's how good it was.

It wasn't an issue of "allowed" but that Xseed didn't WANT to use any of the original localization initially. They wanted to make a new, more "faithful" version. But fan reaction changed that course. Being protective of LUNAR and horrified by some of the releases on portables past, I offered to work with them to make Harmony the best possible version with the original actors recording the new dialogue, and helping write the new text so it matched the old stuff. They refused the help, so I refused contributing the part I still control because it was clear to me that the effort wasn't ending well the way it was going.

You mean accommodating? Offering to get all the original actors together to record the additional audio? Offering to write the new text so it matches the tone of the text they were copying in and didn't stick out like a sore thumb? Yeah, that was awful.

Not sure if you can disclose, but why didn't they take you up on this offer?

Well that answers it. Thanks. Sounds completely reasonable to me. Nothing wrong with a man proud of his team's work. I apologize for calling you a dick earlier. Again, never had any interactions with you before this, so I was just projecting.

No idea. They were tenatively into the idea at the beginning, but then it just stopped. I quoted them a dirt cheap rate to do it, all inclusive, with the new recordings, original actors, and additional text. I personally think they were still hung up on the wanting to do a "faithful" version and didn't want me writing the new stuff to match the old because I would "ruin" it, but that's completely 1000% speculation on my part. The short answer is I do not know what happened. Maybe they heard I was a dick.

Hey, as long as you were projecting big, I'll take it as a compliment.

Godspeed Vic, always heard good things about the PS1 version and I would like to play it one day and PSN seems like the only reasonable method.

BTW, thanks for bringing over Arc the Lad and Alundra over

the folks that did this seem to be actively following the TA thread.

seems like first update will give you the option of choosing which language track, and the option to hide the top bar (time battery life etc).

Can someone give me a quick summary of whats going on with this 'game'?

Wasn't a sega kid, I know Ireland did localization stuff, why is there 'beef' though?

So... any impressions yet? Faithful port? Is it good? I frankly don't care for the original soundtrack, but I still don't trust this version yet. :S

PSP voices... oh well, I"ll live. At least the game part is the PSX version and not the PSP version.

"Remastered" PSP version:

Could be down to preferences, I just like the lyrics in the PSX version more. Remastered is a better quality.

I remember playing the PSP demo and I started singing the PSOne lyrics which didn't match at all with the PSP's opening song. It was akward ;)

I did love the PSOne's intro and I just watched it and felt a nostalgic surge ;(

This thread reminds me of this

Lunardragonsongbox.jpg

This is probably my most disappointing game of all time. I was so hyped for a new Lunar game that it boggled my mind how L:DS got everything wrong. I really wish I could program because I'd want to hack the game to make it playable and fix up the translation issues.

I know it has been mentioned already in this thread...

But what ultimately kills this release for me are the fonts. There surely are other fonts available on iOS? If not, the platform would be in dire need of a GOOD pixelart/retro font - other developers get it right with their own fonts I guess. That standard font many developers use is just damn ugly within retrostyled games... blargh.

Otherwise, I would be "Yay Lunar", been some years since my last playthrough of the old MegaCD-games...

For what it's worth, I loved the PSP version. I played the orignal Sega CD, owned the PS Collector's edition (but never completed the game on the PS1) and did have any issues with the PSP version.

Maybe I'm not a purist but I entertained me. I'll probably hold off on the IOS version though.

Will Eternal Blue ever get to PSN/PSP/IOS?

The game plays well. There are two control schemes available that depend on the orientation of the screen. When played vertically the lower half of the screen is replaced with a d-pad and buttons. When the ios device is positioned horizontally it's all on screen stuff: like Chrono Trigger ios. You can also move by touching a spot on the screen. Alex will try his best to get there but he gets stuck on corners often. Combat can be playe with either control scheme. On the horizontal scheme the game can be played with touch only. Selecting enemy units by touch works well until they all clump together. I only played until the end of the White Dragon Cave, so I'll have more impressions later.

Edit: i'm playing on a 3gs and have had no hiccups. Runs wonderully.

Yeah, when they are clumped together it's really annoying selecting your target. I'm also having trouble with spells - I select Luna's healing and then I have to keep touching one of the characters a lot of times until it accepts it. It's even worse when they are clumped together.

It's lazy and disrespectful to the fans, period. Licensing a font, hand kerning it and getting it in the game is less than a day's work, maybe two if there's really, really complicated memory management. And if you're using the font images and hand kerning, the licenses are less than $100 for most fonts you'd want to consider.

No excuse.

It's not just this release that is ruined by that horrible font. I am enjoying FF Dimensions despite the same bland and ugly font. Can't someone play with these games to replace the fonts :x. I'd settle for the damn PSX Wild Arms font at this point....

I've noticed a lot of iOS games have awful fonts. Is it so much harder to use a custom font on iOS? I've only made games with XNA but it wasn't that hard to convert a new font into the format we needed.
