The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Just be warned that FTL is a brutal game that doesn't teach you a whole lot on how to play. The randomness can add to the frustration, and even on easy the game is really difficult. Nevertheless, it is strangely addicting and fun to play.

Instead of Tokyo Jungle they should go back to one of the earlier games that inspired it, like EVO or Cubivore or Seventh Cross Evolution. Even as a couple hour Friday show watching one of those would be great.

I'm actually really surprised that Patrick and Jeff were so high on Tokyo Jungle. I haven't played it yet but it looks extremely repetitive and a lot of the systems are unclear. (Why would toxicity not be in the sewers when it was above ground?) I'm definitely getting it because there have been a complete lack of Sony Japanese studio games but I'm mixed about it.

Once you play it, things really fall in to place. Its just so fun and fresh. Especially the stealth mechanics.

I'd imagine it's a mixture of it being a budget release (right?), very odd in a highly appreciable manner, and that it gives off mad PSOne Japanese import curio vibes. You just don't get that shit any more.

I'll definitely give it a go.

Pretty much the most interesting Japanese game to me to come out this generation, aside from the Souls gaames. Most of the weird games never make it out here, and this seems to warrant depth than gimmick.

Yeah, it's a Sony published game.

Damn. Well, add it to the list I guess.

Should I ever actually clear my backlog and then have some spare bucks in my wallet, I'll probably pick up a PS3 for the few console exclusives I missed this gen.

Weird Japanese games come out here

I just played Way of the Samurai 4 and that game's weird as hell.

For sure. If you actually like things which can only be made in Japan and are weird by most standards, the stuff is there. I'm not sure if people being honest with themselves when they say they want stuff like that.

I've heard Tokyo Jungle is stupid easy (at least I imagine that isn't considering the first few times you play). Is this true? That's what is turning me off it.

Just got around to Tokyo Jungle, and that game looks pretty freaking amazing.

I'll probably pick it up at some point in the future, but I think it would be a blast playing with friends around.

I think the tutorial does a pretty good job of teaching you the basics.

You pick up on more advanced tips and tricks when playing a couple times (many are simply based on logic and common sense, so that helps).

Tokyo Jungle Quick look was awesome.

Getting 20% off. Will pick it up !

Those few might end up as many heh ! :)

I thought the brief tutorial + watching the QL was a good amount of heads up, the rest you learn by playing/failing which is part of the fun. Really enjoying it myself, the various systems at play are all right up my alley. Appreciate that the enthusiast press gave FTL it's propers over the past few weeks otherwise it might not have been on my radar.

Oh, FTL is amazing, but you have to stick with it, or else you will get frustrated. I did the tutorial, watched the quicklook, and still kept getting my butt kicked to the point where I was about to give up on it, and then it all just clicked (missiles and anti-personel drones, man!) and it is great. It is just very daunting; that's not meant to be a pejorative.

The X-Com quick look was well done, I enjoyed it a lot.

I am still on the fence when it comes to the game itself, does not seem like a whole lot of fun at this point. The bog-standard alien designs are boring.

Haha, I just noticed that throughout the entire quick look the posing model is broken for everybody in the ant farm. Every model is in the standard hands-splayed doll pose

A bit sad they had some visual bugs on this "final version".
T-pose dudes, camera issues and models staying after the unit should have died.

I'm wondering whether it'll be day one patch or just already fixed before launch.

/edit goddamn, the engine's not even displaying the mini cinematics that show up whenever you spot aliens

Try the demo. I am new to the series and had a lot of fun.

I've played the original games up to the relatively recent non-canon Aftermath series.

Terror from the Deep remains the best/paragon of the series and with that said, seeing the quick look made me realize how dumbed-down and restricted the new game is. It is pretty much precisely down to the difference between Civilization V and Civilization Revolution. One is in-depth and mature, the other is not.

I will definitely give the demo a go, it's good they released it.

TFTD is more or less a direct clone of the original with the bullshit meter cranked to maximum :/
