if by "caked" you mean "lightly coated" I agree. how is this not very obviously jgl
That's what I don't get, we have people complaining that the make-up doesn't change jgl at all, and we have people confused and not even recognizing JGL. come to a consensus people!

Yeah, this was fantastic. I did love Brothers Bloom (and Brick, but less so), but here Johnson's vision feels much more complete, taking you on a ride and rarely letting up the pacing. He always keeps you guessing, but adds a surprising amount of heart and instead of being needlessly complex, you're just along for a wild time.

The movie is also brutal in both sound design and with Johnson's editing. There is some insane stuff just completely accentuated due to how well the film is crafted with such a singular vision. Willis is fantastic, JGL is good. There's so, so, so much to talk about but I really don't want to say more since it could lead to major spoilers. Can't wait to discuss this with GAF, they are going to lose their shit.

Is the last act as horrible as I remember?

Not at all, loved it. It's very different from the first two acts, but I appreciated it. What didn't you like about it?

How do you feel about the trailers so far, Expendable? They made the movie seem very muted, formulaic, and even like something that'd get a 55% on the tomatometer. All impressions point to the opposite though.

Kind of reminds me of Source Code.

Blergh. I hope not. Source Code was pretty lame.

You didn't think the mutated abilities aspect of the film seemed completely unneeded and almost like a plot point from another film idea the filmmaker had but decided to hamfist into Looper?

I watched about every single trailer and they tell you next to nothing when it comes to what the movie is about. They give away some visuals, but completely out of context. About 20 minutes in, it'll feel like a brand new movie.

Any chance this could become a wild card best picture nom? Like District 9 was to an extent?

District 9 is a great comparison to this, but I highly doubt it. This movie is much more violent and doesn't have as much social commentary as D9 which is what I think made that film get into BP. Also, the rules have changed since then, don't need exactly 10.

As the film progresses I thought Johnson was consistently one-upping himself in this rollercoaster of a movie he made. It was on a constant crescendo and that aspect was no more ridiculous than Bruce Willis killing the entire force of people that were going to be coming after him. Also, Johnson slowly hints at the abilities throughout, so yes it was wild but in a very fitting way.

Happy to read ALL OF THIS.

I'm thinking we will have back to back releases of highly acclaimed sci-fi flicks that bomb at the box office.

Regardless, I saw Dredd opening weekend and I will see Looper as well.

any sign of a nora zehetner cameo?

I feel like there's been a weird homage/cameo tradition going back to May with Johnson.
hope the tradition continues. or, maybe it's time to break free lol.

Can't wait to see looper! brick and bloom are some of my favs.

god fucking damnit 29 november in the Netherlands.

REALLY NETHERLANDS

District 9 may have more violence, but Looper is a bit more effective. Also, there are some plot points that are thoroughly disturbing and dark.

This, there was a moment when my jaw was on the floor

SPOILER

the bit in the farmhouse with the gatman...holy shit

I've only read the script but are you talking about the scene where
they cut off the dude's limbs in the future, and the effects appear in realtime on a later incarnation of himself within the film?

That part was amazing. There were a few moments where my mouth was completely open:

When Paul Dano's older self is crumbling.

When we see the flash forward 30 year montage. Brilliant filmmaking.

When Bruce Willis goes to kill a kid for the first time. Insane.

Then certainly, the last 10 minutes or so.

Nah, he's talking about
when Garret Dillahunt character explodes due to the rainmaker kid going insane. That's late in the film. The part you say is also CRAZY, happens pretty early on.

Re: the bit that guy thought I meant:

why the fuck were they dismembering him? To panic him into coming to the address on his arm? To make sure he couldn't run away? I never got the impression it was just to punish him as that's a bit extreme, it also seemed like he was on life support.

I get the impression he had to die AFTER his loop, but wouldn't his loop vanish if he died before?

Also, there was two timelines I assume, the one where Willis dies (has the hood on when he arrives) and the one where he lives.
