LTTP - Halo: Reach

GAF, I've never been into shooters. I've found the first-person perspective awkward and I know I'll never last in MP.

But I'm tired of feeling that way. It's seems like every year there's an FPS that looks awesome that I really want to get into, but I'm scared I just won't be able to and who wants to waste $60?

This year that game is Halo 4 - and I wanna play it so badly, I'm changing my ways.

I'm playing my free download of Reach from when I bought my 360 and... I'm really liking it! :D I'm three missions in and I think I'm pretty much used to the controls. I have my aiming sensitivity turned up to 4, my crouch set to toggle, and my difficulty is Normal. I'm dying, but not too much and not in ways that make me feel like the gsme's not being fair. I'm Reslly enjoying finding the "combat loop" in each encounter, as they call it.

So, is there anything I need to know GAF? Any sudden spikes in difficulty? This gsme was divisive, right? Could my time be better spent elsewhere?

Any tips in general?

glad you're enjoying it, its a great game. most of the hate from reach is primarily focused on the multiplayer. definitely check out halo 3 though when you finish reach. best campaign of the series IMO, even if the story was a bit confused.

as far as tips in general go... i'd suggest playing on heroic, which is typically halo series sweet spot, but you mentioned you are dying on normal, so maybe hold off till you are more experienced. no real huge tips, just experiment with different tactics if you are dying repeatedly in the same battles. also, if you didnt know, aim for head shots with human weapons when shields are dropped and use covenant weapons to strip shields quickly. over-charged plasma pistol with a quick switch to dmr or magnum will be your best tool against elites.

I really enjoyed Reach I would say go back and play Halo CE Anniversary after. Up to you if you want to dive into 2,3 and then 4 when it comes out. ODST was fun for me not sure if GAF liked it or not. Firefight is pretty fun with Reach play that it's not typical multiplayer give that a shot.

Get a player 2, Halo is best played in coop!

And this, on the couch playing firefight or online usually pretty entertaining.

Play the game on Normal and then graduate to Heroic if you love it.

Reach is the best single player FPS on consoles this gen.

OH! Thanks! Didn't know about this! Yeah, those Elites have been a little pesky.

Hear hear!

After Reach definitely play Halo: CE Anniversary.

Yeah, Halo: CE Anniversary is a must play if you didn't own the original and are just starting to get into the series. At this point, it might be better to wait for an Halo 2 "remake" from 343i with those glorious graphics and that great art (the game was also unfinished and rushed, so it would be interesting to see how they would handle or even rework it) .

Get Halo anniversary, Halo 3 and ODST for cheap since it's single player focused (although somewhat divisive game also) .

Reach is bad.

Single player and multi.

1. It's not even close to canon
2. The missions are poorly designed
3. The characters are even more poorly designed

If you're looking for SP, play Halo 1-3
If you're looking for MP, play Reach. Halo 4 is going to be more like Reach so you might as well get used to the shitty mechanics

Co-op with a bro on legendary is the best way to play a Halo game. Unless it's a weird Halo game like ODST and it's better as an SP experience.

Reach is a baller co-op experience though.

The best tip to give is always keep a Plasma Pistol handy so you can knock out enemy shields with its overcharge shot.

Reach is the only game in the series that had me play Campaign single-player on Legendary. It was a fun achievement.

Lol at some of you saying to play upwards of 5 campaigns- dude would be campaigned out. I know i would be. ODST isn't even material that is worth the price of entry, story wise. It's just fan service, like reach.

If you like reach by the end... Def check out CE just for experience

Halo 2 and 3 will not be required for halo 4 most likely and Halo 4 will have a recap of events so far

Anniversary or CE/Halo 3/Reach are the must plays of the series. Halo 2's campaign feels pretty bland and ODST is only worth it if you are super into it.

All the Halo games have great campaigns, sans 2. Reach is a fantastic single player or cooperative experience. It is a nice tactical midpoint between ODST's small scale infantry battles and 3's every-mission's-the-grand-finale, boner-stroking epics.

Just play the Halo Trilogy.

Combat Evolved Anniversary
Halo 2
Halo 3

If you like those, play ODST and Reach as well.

Halo 3 is the game of the generation, but you need to experience Halo 1 and 2 first.

speaking on Halo2. i really liked playing as Arbiter. It was pretty much the exact same gameplay, but I liked the story through the covenant. I felt like I was playing as a Protoss Zealot.

My favorite part is when the Incubus music kicks up and you're flying around playing connect the dots.

Yeah, I'm really just trying to prep for 4. The emphasis they're putting on the story and the way they're fashioning it as a jumping on point (taking into consideration it will be many people's first Halo and the fact it's just been a long time since 3, anyway) is what draws me in. And it's very pretty!

didn't like multi, started to lose some of it's uniqueness that separated from other shooters, and I really tried to like multi in Reach because I loved it in 3( which was my Halo experience)

The game is really fun but probably the worst campaign of the series. You really should just get the rest and play through them.

I was a big fan of Reach's campaign. If you like it so far, it only gets better :D

Give MP a try as well. It's quite a bit different from the other games in the series, but since you haven't really played them, you'll definitely like it!

2 player co-op is great, however, if you have XBL may I recommend getting 3 players together. Both Halo 3 and Reach support 4 player co-op through the main campaign (Halo CE:A only supports 2 players). 4 player co-op on legendary with some skulls (skulls tweak the gameplay) turned on for good measure is really where the AI shines and you'll see some awesome crazy stuff.

The best times I've had in my 30yrs of gaming, the Halo games in co-op has been the lion's share of them. Best co-op gaming franchise period.

I gotta agree. The most sheer fun I've ever had gaming has been while playing Halo with friends. The series is full of great moments.

Im playing Halo 2 right now, which from what i understand is generally considered one of the weaker campaigns of the series, but i have to say it's way way better than Halo CE's campaign, which is dull, repetitive and vastly overrated. Looking forward to the other, supposedly "weaker" campaigns like Reach and ODST because it seems like my tastes in Halo are contrary to the general consensus.

Reach is so good- I recently went through the campaign co-op on Legendary with two close friends. It was a blast.

I guess little thing you may not know would be the Magnum is just as strong as the DMR, just less accurate.. uh... Oh, giving allies power weapons allows them to use it it infinitely, so if you are down to one rocket be sure to give it to a marine, he will bring the pain. Halo is an amazing co-op game.. find someone else to play it with for more crazy fun.

Oh, and if you feel comfortable with it try to switch to heroic. The game literally throws different sets of enemies at you from time to time and its generally the most rewarding difficulty once you get the hand of things. Don't rush into it though.

Halo's story goes to crap when Halo 2 starts. Best to not get invested in it. Maybe they can salvage things starting with 4. But what started with great mystery and intrigue in CE turned into the most underwhelming plot imaginable. It is therefore unimaginable that any game in the series is better than the original. And particularly since also starting in Halo 2, they went all vehicle happy. Yeah, no thanks, long vehicular combat sequences are quite lame.

CE Anniversary is therefore the greatest Halo game released since CE. This much is true and I shall label anyone who claims otherwise a liar and possibly not of his or her right mind.

I freaking loved the in-game custom spartan, even in the cinemas it shows your custom helmet, maybe the most played halo campaign for me.

Even though Reach is considered by many to be the worst Halo game, it still is a damn good game. If you're enjoying Reach, you'd probably enjoy the previous games. Try Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a remastered version of the first game, if you get a hankering for more Halo after finishing Reach.

More great tips! Thanks!

I always thought that aspect was cool from afar. How do I actually customize my Spartan though?

You have to go to the Armory and equip a piece of armor.

You unlock armor by earning credits in any game mode, though you usually get the most from playing Matchmaking.

Some armor cannot be purchased until you reach a certain rank.

The only way you're going to get better is if you crank up to Legendary and learn the error of your ways.

After a couple of attempts at completing a mission on Legendary go into the MLG playlist and attempt to win a game, just doing these things will increase your skill level exponentially.

i said halo 3 has the best campaign... but dont sleep on odst either. VERY good game.

I really enjoyed the campaign on Legendary. Not as tough as Halo 2 (or as cheap) but it was still quite rewarding.

Oh, how do I access the Armory? That option popped up once, but I haven't caught it again.
