Looper (dir. Rian Johnson; Gordon-Levitt, Willis)

He really was amazing, I was blown away by some of his expressions and the way he just seemed far older than he was.

Since there were so many twists and turns, I kept thinking that somehow there was a third loop and that was a younger JGL/Willis. Especially the way Johnson films the kid initially, how you don't see his face. But then when the rainmaker stuff started happening it wasn't the case.

Oh btw, if you are even slightly interested in time-travel stuff I highly recommend checking out Robert Heinlein's short story "By His Bootstraps." I think it's the oldest piece of scifi I have read dealing with the concept (1940s) and I thought his execution was beautiful.

I just got back from seeing this. I have been on completely blackout for this film since my editor saw it and advised I do so just over a month ago.

I would also advise you to stop reading right now for the same reason. Go in with no expectations whatsoever. Go. Vanish.

I thought it was fantastic.
It was clever, narratively daring and heart-felt. Fuck the high-concept conceit of the film - which was really well explored mind you, the characters themselves were really well thought out. A lot of work has gone into thinking out how these people have been shaped and affected in this world.

Every actor in this film did a great fucking job. Everybody believed in the material.

That kid now makes me believe that a live-action AKIRA is possible. What a great young actor!

Of course I must mention the obvious logic-flaw that they created in going for the happy ending. Yet I must admit that I'm willing to overlook the breaking of the cycle because I can understand that Johnson felt that these characters deserved a happy ending. The logical rule would have said that Willis shoots the kid and it goes on forever and ever and ever. I don't mind either way I guess.

Overall, it's fighting it out with Moonrise for my MOTY so far. Will have to see it again to see if it stacks up on rewatch.

Recommended!

Stopped reading there! And I just realized all the spoiler text is in plain sight, glad I didn't catch anything I didn't want to! LOL. Seeing this tomorrow, can't wait!

I was just really tense the whole latter part of the film expecting to see the kid have his jaw blown off ("he has a synthetic jaw")

I thought it was ok. was a little too hyped for it probably.

the whole timetraveling and looping was really well thought out. But the actual film was a lot slower than i was expecting.
The ending actually suprised me.

Re: people being overhyped.

It might be true, I had heard not one thing about it, friend called me and said "free press screening tomorrow?" and I said "Hell yeah", I hadn't even seen a trailer, I just knew Willis was in it.

No expectations at all (probably low ones actually)...bit late for people on this thread to have that I guess ;)

It just needs to come out and all will be good. I was quite possibly the most prone to hype. I read every article since hearing about the film FOUR years ago and I was still blown away.

Yeah, same. Even the scene where JGL and the kid escaped via the underground tunnel, I was expecting something horrible to happen as they were peeking out from it.

Ebert gives is 3.5 out of 4 stars: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120926/REVIEWS/120929993

It's a really lame review though and (surprise!) full of spoilers. It's more of a plot synopsis.

Question for those that have seen Looper already -

I LOVED Brick and Brothers Bloom. Two of my favorite movies. However, from the trailers, Looper looks like it isn't even remotely as stylistic as those two. I really enjoyed the snappy dialogue in both of those movies, and the visual quirkyness. Does Looper have any of that, or is it more of a straightforward SciFi film?

Snappy dialogue is most definitely still there, especially in the first act. And its full of great visual moments and the sequences you've come to love from Johnson. Right off the bat too, super impressive.

I loved Jeff Daniels Dialogue:

The whole rant about wearing ties, the bit about going to China over France "kid, I'm from the future, go to China" and especially his speech before he asks JGL to give up Dano

That was a fantastic scene. My audience full of critics erupted in laughter after that one line.

Re: the bit that guy thought I meant:

why the fuck were they dismembering him? To panic him into coming to the address on his arm? To make sure he couldn't run away? I never got the impression it was just to punish him as that's a bit extreme, it also seemed like he was on life support.

I get the impression he had to die AFTER his loop, but wouldn't his loop vanish if he died before?

Also, there was two timelines I assume, the one where Willis dies (has the hood on when he arrives) and the one where he lives.

Saw this movie last night, loved it. Will probably see it again Saturday morning for cheap.

This bothered me too. The whole reason they couldn't kill the younger version was that it would have too much impact and unpredictability for the future, right? How does making a dude no longer be able to walk not alter the timeline he would have followed?

Also, regarding Jeff Daniels recommendation for him to go to China.. That technically sets of the set of events that leads to the kid's mom dying right?

This movie has caused me to have a lot of questions on what would have been and what is happening. I guess that is the point, but it doesn't make it any easier for me not to get hung up on those questions.

Isn't it about time for an intervention on that guy? I can't think of a film critic who's fallen further. His reviews are near contentless and his refusal to even try to refrain from giving a full plot synopsis simply shows contempt for his audience. He has to have heard these complaint by now, which means he's willfully ignoring them. Someone needs to sit him down and make him read one of his own old reviews, remind him how to not be an idiot.

He makes good money for his folks, so that's not going to happen. But, yeah, I can't see myself reading anymore reviews from him. He's got poor critical faculty and a lot of guff.

I wouldn't expect it to be a smash by any stretch.

But to answer your question, I have no idea how its tracking.

So is a $20 million opening weekend out of the question?

It seems weird, though - JGL isn't much of a BO draw as a lot of people would like to think.

JGL isn't a draw (yet) and Willis isn't really anymore. Then there's the time travel plot.

Hard sell to the masses.

Ah, didn't realize you were playing the semantics game :p
not really, just interpreted the post in an apparently unintended way is all, with "at the BO" there changing the meaning of "tracking" from the prerelease practice of projecting public interest in a film with numbers like awareness percentages to actually tracking real ticket sales at the Box Office.

I remember hearing from people that read the script a while ago that this movie would be awesome. I couldn't stand Brother's Bloom though but the premise of this and the reviews have me excited.

Would saying forecast would've been more suitable, then?

http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3532&p=.htm

BOM is saying that the forecast for Looper is 15mill, and they expect it to lose to Hotel Transylvania. They echoed what Solo said here about the concept being too much for some.

that's wack. Should have slapped Nolan's name on this.

haha i remember they were reading it on ign a while back

ff7 said it was good i think

From what I heard, there were some changes made from that script to the final movie.

That makes me really happy. Glad to hear that the trailers are just pretty bad.

I was really hyped, just because it's Rian Johnson, but this just pushes it to astronomical levels.

This movie was amazing, best I've seen at the theater in years

I hope it does well, they didn't do a good job selling it in trailers at all. I went expecting a real B movie cheese fest

Rian Johnson was dressed as an ArcLight usher, introducing the movie for us, lol.

It was fucking amazing. It's tied with Cloud Atlas as the best movie I've seen this year so far.

Was good, but not great. First half was much better than the 2nd half.

I agree.

I went in with pretty high expectations based on the reviews, guess it was my fault for doing that.

A lot of the movie was brilliant, then some of it was a bit underwhelming. Some sleep will help me simmer on my thoughts a bit more.
