As long as I get to my event early I should be good right? they won't run out of guilds from a previous event before I even get there?

Hard to say as it varies from store to store, depending on their supply/demand. I know my old store you could preregister with preferences. Honestly I doubt they'd run out of everything, and you should still have fun with any guild.

Not sure, should be fine.
If not, to speak the truth the guild you pick has a minimal affect on your overall experience because the five other packs will make the difference so you can pick a guild with one of the two colors you originally were aiming for if you have to and then splash.

It probably depends on the store. One I am going to is handing out guilds by order of preregistration. Probably just call your store and ask.

Ya, mine made us choose ahead of time when we first registered.

Edit: I really have to see if I can switch to Golgari, it's too good. :(

Doesn't choosing a guild only determine what special booster you get? You've still got 5 other boosters to build your deck out of if you want to go a different direction.

It's all about that promo.

Going Azorius/Izzet/Rakdos means you will be guaranteed to have a game winner in your deck.

The Uncommons/Commons are nothing to sneeze at either.

Is the Rakdos promo that good? At six mana without evasion it just doesn't feel as potent as the others. Also I think the Selesyna promo could be good with some populate synergy.

Haste and first strike means that it will have a strong chance of making an impact at least once which is more than many things can say.
One nice thing is, that at least as soon as I know what guild I am playing against I know at least one thing that will most likely need to be planned for.

Selesnya's Promo is definitely a game winner but not by itself, it needs populate support (which the booster can provide in spades).

As for the Hellsteed, well, it beats every other Promo (aside from Selesnya's) on the offense in head on combat, as well as bombs like Niv-Mizzet. It's also pretty cheap and you have the option of upping it just a little bit if you don't need it as a blocker. With Unleash, it can take on Isperia, a vanilla Desecrated Demon (very strong in sealed, trust me on this), Angel of Serenity, just about every other bomb in this set except for Selesnya's 7CMC 8/8 vigilance.

I do prefer evasion on my bombs but Rakdos' is pretty good for the price. With Unleash, you want a creature that's not afraid of attacking every turn if need be, and First Strike goes a long way to making sure you can swing regardless of the board state.

I forget what guild name belongs to what colors but everything but W/U looks about even to me with G/B being slightly on top.

The only problem with the Rakdos promo is it can be chumped for days.

Azorius one definitely seems the best if you can untap with it. A double Frost Titan trigger is pretty sick. Though the Izzet one would probably actually be better with the average Azorius deck that will get built.

I agree with this. I wouldn't mind building Azorius even if I chose the Izzet pack.

I agree with this, except I'd reverse that last part. Azorius has much better support for Archon (stall/control) than Izzet does for Hypersonic.

Edit: Aaaw! You edited!

It just seems like Detain and the Azorius cards in general lend itself more to a tempo based strategy of constantly getting in with fliers and detaining blockers than an actual Control game plan. For that kind of plan I'd much rather have a hasted 4/4 flier for 5 than a bomb you need to untap with for 7.

I think Azorius can go both ways. My problem with aggro Azorius/Izzet is that Izzet cards are kind of lackluster for aggro and there are only a handful of mono-red playables (mostly the burn spells).

Of course, you can always do Azorius/Selesnya with a few Izzet Keyrunes for Hypersonic.

So I just preregistered for the tournament on Sunday. I haven't played in over 15 years and even then I only played a handful of times. I don't really remember how to to play I just remember it being fun. It's not to hard to pick up right??

Not at all, although I suggest you play some Duels of the Planeswalkers to re-familiarize yourself with the rules, or else you might get taken advantage of in the prerelease by scummy players.

It is an advanced set but at MOST shops people are cool.
My gf is playing Saturday and she has played maybe four games total in her life, and those with someone co-piloting with her.

Cool, thanks. I am downloading that app on my ipad right now.

do you guys recommend anything for counters? or will there be some there? like Stingray said I am getting back into this after years and years and don't have any magic stuff currently.

You should bring some coins (for counters/flips), a notebook (life total, notes) and a pen.

Dice, coins, little slips of paper. Pretty much anything can work.

I've even seen people tear up their junk commons for this purpose. Though this somewhat physically hurt me to see.

Just be sure to bring some paper to write down life totals and some sort of box to put your cards in. Though the box you get as the prerelease pack might serve your box purpose well.

I think coins are the best because they won't be jiggled around or blown away.

thanks guys will do! is paper needed since the pre-release says it comes with 1 Spindown™ Life Counter ??

I can bring paper its no biggie I just want to limit the stuff I am carrying in.

You can use the dice if you want, but if for some reason there is a dispute about life totals having a running total for both you and your opponent can help a lot.

Spindown is fine but some people prefer writing as it should lead to less mistakes.

I used the Magic Toolbox app for my iphone as the life counters during my lunch games which works great. Not sure how kosher that would be at a prerelease though.

Ooh, do we get boxes at the pre-release again finally? Are they like the Besieged boxes?

They apparently look like this:

apparently , my store is having a midnight pre-release event tonight

bringing my gf in, she's not good at magic, but im sure we'll have fun together

I'm going Selesnya, so I can eventually build my Conjurer's Closet deck

Been messing around with that draft simulator, WUG seems very strong.

I don't know, and don't care if there's a shard name for WUG, I'm gonna call it WUG.

Same thing with WUB.

wubwubwub

So what is everyone seeing in Azorius that I'm not. D:

The ability to completely control the battlefield no matter how big a bomb the other side has.
A good mix of fliers and card draw.
Enough variety of removal to cover enchantment, artifact or creatures.

PLUS you can splash a dash in Izzent or Sel rather easily.

(Which is why I picked Az for Saturday, even though Golgari is dearest to my heart and is what I will play Friday night)

There's really nothing in GW to compete with Archon, except perhaps Armada Wurm. And Selesnya's Uncommon/Common are already ludicrously strong, best Charm and best Guildmage, tons of solid value creatures.

(I'd cream my pants at Armada Wurm as the promo. I'd cream it twice, once for each wurm. Too bad it's Mythic.)

How many lands/cards do you guys typically play with in a draft/prerelease? In the past I've not been great at these things. Often I draw too many/too few lands.
