I say "gyp" all the time. *crosses arms*The appropriate term for this group is Roma. "Gypsie" is derogatory.
There's no gypsies whatsoever in my neck of the woods.

He was, it was confirmed.

Yeah, I remember learning a lot in that thread but I have forgotten most of it since it is not a common topic around here.Hey, I had no idea until I was told. I had no idea how these people are discriminated against.
Travellers would also work.
For now. The directive is to focus back on the topic, but if it gets out of hand again, then there will be bannings.
Where can I send you a beer? I bet you need one after a hard day destroying souls like every iteration of Final Fantasy XIII that gets released.

This is the first for GAF having mass bannings?
I'm usually pretty flexible but I don't know, I like the word.

Sunday massbannings
I say that too.You should switch to "Indian giver."
Like the thousandth.
As someone who likes jewish people has has dated some, I think jewed is a more offensive word than either of those I mentioned, by far :\I never knew that "jewing" someone out of something was even a thing until someone said you should use gyp as a replacement for it. I had always used gyp, which I also thought was jip.
Sort of like I always used jerry rigged. We were at a home depot and talking about jerry rigging something together, and a guy turned around and said we shouldn't use that phrase as it's offensive to germans. We thought back to WWII movies and went huh yeah I guess it probably is. But we sure as hell aren't going to use a different variation on that phrase. I guess I might just use jury rigged, but jerry is so ingrained in me.

Something along the context of nearly everyone in the thread getting banned?

I believe it is "gerry" rigged, i.e. booby-trapped. A derogatory term for the Germans from the War.
Although their etymologies are obscure and their meanings overlap, these are two distinct expressions. Something poorly built is “jerry-built.” Something rigged up temporarily in a makeshift manner with materials at hand, often in an ingenious manner, is “jury-rigged.” “Jerry-built” always has a negative connotation, whereas one can be impressed by the cleverness of a jury-rigged solution. Many people cross-pollinate these two expressions and mistakenly say “jerry-rigged” or “jury-built.”

I say that too.
I also say "reneg" as in like "don't reneg on me bro"
If gypsies was an offensive term Channel 4 wouldn't have made millions off it.
Some people say it's too like, related to racial black stuff or whatever? I don't know or care.Sure, what's wrong with "renege"?
Oh, its un-stickied. Does that mean its over?

I think UKGAF has been resigned to simply waiting for the rest of the world to catch up with words.

No one takes it offensively, so it's not an offensive word to worry about. Just another word in the english language.
I think you are right about the re-appropriation. From the 16C "gerry" had suggested excrement (Devon dialect). Probably why the word was used during the war. I'm not seeing anything about sailing in Jonathon Green's Dictionary of Slang.A quick look at Wikipedia suggests that the term is much older and based in sailing terminology, but I guess it could have picked up offensive connotations during WW2 regardless.
props to Evilore for letting me do what must be done, even when not always agreeing with my methods
LORD, WILL YOU GRANT ME JUST A LITTLE TIME? FOR THE PROPER BALANCE OF THINGS. TO RETURN WHAT WAS GIVEN. FOR THE SAKE OF PRISONERS AND THE FLIGHT OF BIRDS.
LORD, WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR, IF NOT THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?
I have to.
Dude was legit panicking, too. Then he got over it only to get banned later. Agghhhh

On a more general note, I'm glad this is done. For those of you wondering why I stickied both threads with that message, it was to engender on a wider scale what this thread has focused on - a public round of self reflection and a shitload of discussion on more than the nature of moderation, but the behavior in those threads. It shouldn't be that way, but like the great warrior poet Bruce Hornsby once sang, "that's the way it is".
This thread is a safety valve that I think the forum needs, and I hope it stays that way - good or bad.
tl;dr - don't start no shit, won't be no shit
and no I won't be answering your questions about when people are coming back (if at all)

That sounds like a fraternity party with candles and 151.a stream of puke coming from your mouth that's been set on fire
I am glad that its over. I will say this though: I only posted once in that thread, and decided that with not only the dog piling on Devo, but the general feel of many of the posts that my opinion would have likely been torn into just like hers was. As I don't have the backbone that Devo does, way more stress than I needed.
It sometimes feels that way in any thread that is basically about sexism or rape (barring the Hot Girls Ugly Guys thread, though of course there is some there too). I love this forum more than any other because some of that shit IS addressed, unlike most other places on the Internet, but it still feels a bit hostile at times if you are a female poster. Examples include the creeper thread, that thread about the girl on the train getting screamed at for not wanting to talk to someone, and nearly every 'female gamers' thread.
Well there's nothing they can really do about that, at least nothing I can think of. I do however feel that topics about sexism and or rape are things that should be discussed at home or in person so people have a better understanding on how to deal with it. Trying to make someone understand over the internet just doesn't really work as its just not the best way to reach someone.
