Is GAF too strict?

I was here for the last several months of her time on GAF and she always seemed like a perfectly agreeable mod to me. I must have missed something.

before that there was a subtle acknowledgement that this is the internet and that people just say silly and offensive shit all the time so when someone moderated toward a goal like political correctness the userbase responded with

Read some threads from 06-07, if they were around now some of them would ~60% bannable posts.

It´s never a fair trade to be allowed to insult people on forums, or be very aggressive towards other posters, or a detrimental to discussions. She does the same thing in every thread about women. She accuses people of being sexist even though they are not.

Being aggressive and insulting even though one have a good mindset in mind does not excuse her behavior.

Yeah, those people are all sexist.

Have half the forum hating on you just because you are vocal woman, and let's see how calm you are.

I feel like people are now getting banned simply for having opinions. If you say something that is unpopular and doesn't fit with the hive mind you risk getting banned. And defending yourself almost increases those odds.

I know you only said hivemind once and you've since apologized, but GAF is simply not a hive mind. The only way I look at GAF as a hive mind is that it's a safe place. Sure we can disagree about politics, movies and videogames, but it's, at least in recent years, always been a safe place for many people as long as it doesn't devolve into personal attacks or stuff of that nature.

I've probably made it clear that in past threads that I live in the middle of nowhere. For example, with the trans thread you noted earlier, I don't look at at trans members pointing out that "ladyboy" might be offensive as a sign that GAF is subject to faux outrage or political correctness. I look at it as a chance to learn from people that I would never meet in my everyday life, yet have found a home here on GAF and I can learn from them. Posters for example like Ottoman Scribe or Devolution, two opposites ends of a spectrum if you will, don't exist in my world or, at least if they did, they would be ridiculed or attacked if they spoke their opinion. They'd probably try to tar and feather Ottoman where I live and Devo would probably be either laughed at or beaten if there were enough rednecks in the room.

That's the thing for me. GAF gives me an outlet to the outside world so to speak and strength to believe in my convictions. I was a coward in colllege when I was sporting my "Fight Racism" Hot Topic t-shirt and did jack shit to stick up for the gay kid at my summer movie theater job in between semesters who was constantly called the f-word.

FFS, I'm still a god damn coward to this day when I listened to a guy that was going to give out a peace award talk about how gay people were abominations. I don't know. I'm not the best poster and I've probably deserved to be banned a few times, but GAF at least is a place I can escape to where people are treated equally and we can just talk about shit without fear of that kind of stuff.

tl:dr

I love GAF.

I am totally going to hunt up some MLP gifs, just cause you are awesome, so that I might use them to brighten your day on occasion.

Just be careful not to post them in a regular Gaf thread. The universe will obviously implode, people will start screaming, babies crying, dogs barking, lighting strikes, divide by 0...

...or at least, that's what a decent portion of Gaf wants us to think happens ;)

Yeah I'm sure it is because she's a woman, and has nothing at all to do with her manner of posting + the fact that if anyone else addressed fellow members like she does they'd be permed in a nanosecond.

I don't see you getting this same "hate" for being a female poster here. Nor shanshan, nor Cloudwalking, nor fiction, nor just about every other female poster. Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder why that is?

I wonder how much avatars play into people's mind when they get into arguments. I mean, your avatar repels any sort of aggression, I feel. Thunder Monkey's is also similar.

I actually don't hate anyone. Life's too short to burn your energy out on hating people in real life, much less complete strangers.

I even tried to defuse the creep thread since I saw the banstorm coming: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42626783&postcount=88

Alas, no one listens to the stoner's philosophy until it's too late.

^Lol.
Naw, I'll only use them when quoting you! That's okay right?

I think if it's kind of on topic, like a "I agree" brohoof or something, I don't think people will spaz out too much. You might not want to take the risk though.

I don't really know what it is but if you post something pony out of the thread people just go bonkers. It's been a while though since I've actually seen anyone post anything in offtopic gaf land so it might be different now.

I think Thunder Monkey is probably the least hostile poster in the entirety of NeoGAF. Even though he posts seriously, most of his posts have a slightly non-seriousness to them (in a good way). Even more so when we had animated avatars.

I remember seeing him banned recently, and it made me wonder how the heck he could have possibly ever gotten banned. lol

I try to help but they're always like "Take that joint out of your mouth and get a job you hippy." I try to tell them that being me is already a huge undertaking as it is with hand puppets and plays I came up with. But they don't seem to grasp the context.

GAF should ban people for creating topics that say "Capcom announces 6 new games!" then the text of the OP is "for IOs."

It was kind of funny the first time or two, now it's just stupid. At some points there are 3+ threads of that nature on the front page.

In general GAF is far too lenient with people creating joke and garbage threads. "Here is an inflammatory out of context quote from some developer, from an interview which already has a thread dedicated to it!"

Nowhere near as vocal, whereas other users who do post as much as she does never seem to get that kind of hate.

At least, I've never seen an Orayn-signal or something. And Mumei because he's a mod now. Is Devo more aggresive? Well, sure, but in the creepshot thread Dennis was being even more so yet you have people crying for his ban who at the same time want Devo's.

Never brush your pubes with Nirolak's styling wand.

OH! DRAMA!

I may have to steal some of those cookies from EatChildren to apologize to Nirolak.

Also thread titles with ellipses. Hate that shit.

It works in real life better than online, I suppose. I try to defuse situations with my friends when they get a little tense, usually via the Ganj. Who wants to fight when you're busy sharing jokes that aren't even funny but you still laugh anyways because that's the atmosphere?

Your avatar is missing a blood-drop.

Naw, man, I want to promote happiness, not Watchmen bleakness.

Hey I still love GAF too, I just feel like its become a different place than when I started posting and not necessarily for the better.

First they took our animated avatars, then they took our emoticons and now, worst of all, they took our Blasty.

I could see this becoming a gaf in meme.

For what it's worth, didn't Dennis get banned not too long ago and he came back right? Even G-Fex did. I honestly am not sure who Blasty is. Is a junior ban an automatic perma or is there leeway? Again, I'm not sure who Blasty is.

I'll admit to getting a bit heated in a 'girls aren't real gamers' thread.

But I am also in general of the opinion that people being jerks are startled when you continue to be super nice to them, and might think on their actions more than if you give them a feeling of justified anger by appearing to angry back.

Devo has had to deal with this this stuff a lot longer than here than I have, and she is vocal about it. She got attacted in the creeper thread because she said 'Stop speaking for my gender'. The stuff that got flung her way after that was incredibly awful. People have made fan art of her that disgusting and insulting as well. Of course she is going to be super defensive.

The point I was making is that Devo is infamous and reviled by many not for the simple fact that she is female, as Anti-Monitor suggested, but because she constantly posts in an abrasive, hostile, overly aggressive style and does so with virtual impunity. If there was a male equivalent who posted like she does, they would receive the same "hate", because people don't like seeing double standards and they don't react well to unchecked aggression.

Does this mean that she has never had cause to be angry and hostile? Of course not. But anyone who has been reading the OT for a while knows that a lot of times she is the one who escalates things and yet the person she is arguing with is the one who usually gets banned.

All I'm saying is that I doubt very much that people's issues with Devo have anything to do with her gender, and everything to do with her style of posting and the fact that she gets away with it where others don't.

Yeah, if you're banned as a junior you're pretty much done.

Here's Stumpokapow from earlier in the thread.

Our rule is that bans for junior members are permanent, and the vast majority are. I'd guess greater than 90%. A junior banned for a race or homophobia issue or admitting to piracy or any of the other mid-level stuff that normal members get banned for is probably getting a perm.

This is complete and utter bullshit. I'd love to see just one actual example, because all I see are consistent assertions that Devo is NeoGAF's dark angel and no actual examples of her getting away with shit that I, for instance, wouldn't get away with. Show me just one, or stop trying to assert your magical worldview where Devo is the problem instead of all the people who revile her. Because I'm just not seeing it.

Getting rid of animated gifs as avatars was the best change GAF has ever made.

Yeah, that guy has an obvious obsessive hate-on for Devo since he said a flat out lie about the "virtual impunity" no repercussions thing.

I can't speak for her, but I know she's been banned before, so the rules clearly apply to everyone.

I got a full month for going aggro in a thread in which I felt people were victim blaming so I'm not safe. In fact after that creepshots thread I should probably be a little more careful.

From what I've seen Devo only gets aggressive if anyone (not just males) attacks her views or perspective and refutes them them as irrational points that only she can believe. I personally get aggressive when people assert things I don't find find true about myself, being a woman and to have that happen must be infuriating.

From what some of you are saying, it sounds like some of you are holding a grudge when theres no beef to speak of, its also sort of awkward that some of you are crying for a execution for feeling wronged or offended by her in the past. Its also weird talking about her when she's currently not in the thread.

better safe than sorry.

The others will do well in ensuring their own self destruction. We've already seen t hat.

Yeah, and Evilore admitted in IRC that her browbeating of other members was reaching a point where he had to ban her so as to not appear partial and to show that no one is above the rules.

I really don't care that certain members get extra leeway, but pulling the "everyone hates her cuz she's a girl!" card is just patent nonsense.

Better watch out for the Sadmad guy, he's a-gunning for you.
Awwww, someone's jelly.

She's the one I had my little argument with I talked about a few pages back. I didn't say her name though because so many seem to have something against her. Personally, I came out of our argument liking/respecting her a shit ton more. Hell though....she probably doesn't even remember what it was (I barely do) or who the heck I am.

Devo's passionate about certain things - but she makes herself a target because she's speaking for a group that's very under represented here, so that often makes her the only one calling out certain behaviour. If there were a lot more females on the board we'd get more responses from them and Devo wouldn't be the one appearing to be the aggressor so much.

As someone with sisters and GFs who have been leered at, ass-grabbed at clubs, been talked to in a disgusting manner or feeling threatened by certain men's attitudes and behaviour I'm glad someone is raising their voice about these things.
