2012 First U.S. Presidential Debate |OT| OK Libya... We need a leader, not a reader.

Not the debate i was hoping for. Obama really should have asked for specifics from Mittens and the moderation was weak. I feel like obama really weighs the average persons life struggles on his mind while romney believes business will provide all the answers. So if obama wins we get another term of tea party bullshit and immediate vows to further separate the country or we get a guy that was built in a lab who has no idea what a day in the life of joe schmoe is like and will begin to gut things like its all a giant corporate A & M.

A simpler way to put it is Obama wanted to be president to help people. Romney wants to be president just to be president.

In terms of content Obama wins hands down. But Romney was just so smooth consistently, while Obama only had a few really smooth moments. Romney is peddling bullshit but he's a good salesman.

Romney is not really that great. He has his prepared lines but that is all, anyone with a pulse and some functioning brain cells could debate Romney with the proper preparation. Anytime Romney is put under real pressure he consistently cracks.

Its a sad sorry world when the response is that the guy pulling shit out of his ass "convincingly" is the won who is deemed to have won the debate whether they agreed with him or not. The popular response people should be propagating is that he lost in miserable fashion due to his insistence of fiction and rudeness which has no place in a debate for President.

Romney was a winner in presentation, but everything he said was completely void of substance. It was one of the most shallow things I've ever seen. The people who are condensing his argument to "I'll take your (Obama's) stuff, remove the bad stuff, and make the good stuff better" are not exaggerating

Should change the slogan:

Romney/Ryan 2012
Believe in Magic

One last thing. If you poll GAF on who won the debate....well it looks like we know who would win that poll. But if you poll GAF on who they're voting for....well it looks like we know who would win that poll.

Don't mean it to sound like spin (GAF leans left etc.) but it just came to my mind. Don't know if it's an actual point or not.
The point is most people are decided who they are going to vote for. The EV map favors Obama.

8 said they're changing to Obama, 8 said they're changing to Romney. The rest thought both candidates did not give enough detail

Probably won't know the impact of the debate until at earliest Saturday.

Any good, substantial fact checks up yet? I'm not having any luck, and I'm going to need them at work tomorrow.

I think the NYTimes has one up, but we won't get really good ones til tomorrow at the earliest. Well I say that but it depends on how easy it is the fact check Romney's lies.

To me it's clear Romney's going to gain 2-3 points in the polls, before it stabilizes again.

CNN:

Both Candidates got an "A" for the debate.

LMFAO

Obama was obliterated and just threw the election Al Gore style. If he wins it'll be by pure electoral advantage, if he loses it'll come down to that disgraceful performance. Lazy, rambling, and completed failed to bring Romney out of his bubble.

Romney endorsed Simpson-Bowles, even though his VP destroyed the entire deal. So why didn't Obama mention it? Why was Obama writing his next novel when Romney was speaking during a split screen debate?

Romney looked more powerful on stage with a sitting President, Carter vs Reagan style.

My overall impression of the debate was that both candidates had pretty clear differences in their policies and ideologies. Neither, however, did a great job in explaining why their policy was the best policy.

As for style, well...I personally am not sure. I wasn't really watching the debate so much as I was listening to it. Reading other people's opinions of the debates makes it clear that most people felt Romney "handled" himself better. I personally don't put a lot of stock in that. But I can understand the argument that it gives you a window into the candidate's character.

I have a feeling this is going to be like the Ryan speech. Sounds great at first but once you looking into the shit spewed things will change.

You say this like other places have a better grasp on priorities. At least millions of people are watching a debate, not a fucking Royal wedding with a make believe Prince/Princess and Queen.

Yeah come at me Europe.

10 million watched the first prime ministerial debate then 4 million watch the second after seeing what a circus of bullshit it was. I hope the US figures scale in a similar fashion after tonight's atrocity which looked like a kindergarten argument in comparison. I won't defend the Royal weddings 25 million viewership as I can't really see the reason for having a monarchy at this point, but I'd like to know how a literal a royal family are make believe?

I think Friday will be a bigger effect with jobs numbers out. Obama can't afford yet another poor number. Well actually he absolutely can, but its not advised.

I live in Georgia.
I can't help but push the blue button with an exasperated sigh.

Shit, I live in West Virginia and Bams almost lost to a federal prison inmate in the primary. Voting Democrat where I live isn't even like voting for Nader, it's like voting for a green party or constitution candidate. I'm just worried because Ohio is right next to us.

Are there any good summaries or bullet-point mark ups of the stance each of the candidates took for each topic? This was my first debate and a lot went over my head. :(

Probably shellshock on trying to decipher what is Romney getting at exactly, cause it cant be as simple as saying the opposite of what he's been saying until the debate. Which it was, which it was why it took Obama a while to start calling bullshit, and by that time everyone got really strict on time.

This reminds me of everyone saying Ryan's Republican Convention speech was great outside of all the lies. Clinton is going to campaign till he passes out talking about medicare vouchers and Romney's mythical tax "plan" , and now Romney backed up both those talking points.

"Romney endorsed Simpson-Bowles"

iirc Romney specifically said he DOESN'T endorse Simpson-Bowles, that he has his own plan. Exactly the same as Obama's answer.

I definitely think Romney won the debate tonight but that does not mean I'm voting for him. The rhetoric being thrown around that lifelong Dems like myself will vote for him after tonight is ludicrous, lol.

Problem is the Narrative coming out of this debate is going to be Obama getting knocked around by Romney. Fact checking wont even be a concept pursued

Romney will no doubt probably win every debate if you wanna call them "wins".. he's better at it than Obama by far but historically the debates literally mean nothing. There's never been a big shift in the polls

I think Obama tries too hard and sometimes comes off as nervous.. hes not free flowing with this thoughts or aka hes not as good of a bullshitter

Romney definitely won the debate tonight when it comes down to overall performance. Obama just didn't look like he was ready. Obama had quality facts and words and he sounds like a real person fighting for people, but in a television debate, being the louder person is what will win you it. He has to come out swinging next week or it'll be a long election day for him. He needs to speak a bit faster and more aggressively. He needs to call out Romney on his bullshit and his lies. Obama needs to tell the truth in the same aggressive, loud, passionate tone that Romney was as he spewed out his lies. He also needs to speak carefully and precisely... no more 'umm, 'ugh' and 'hmm'.

I fully expect Fox News and the Republicans to jump on this like crazy.

Damnit Obama, what the fuck? Not a good start.

I'm Xisiqomelir, and I endorse this post.

Also, fuck this fear of "angry black man". Mittens has stated openly that HE WOULD LET HALF THE COUNTRY STARVE TO DEATH. He should be repeatedly nailed to the wall, not allowed to wriggle away from it.

Obama did ask for specifics. Romney ignored him. Hell, even Leher asked if Romney supported Simpson-Bolwes. He didn't answer and started his rant. Obama brought up the FACT that Romney wants to cut taxes on rich people. Romney just continued to lie that he had no plan to reduce taxes on the wealthy, even though he said he did.

Eventually Obama just gave up and faced the camera and asked the American people if they truly believed Romney's bullshit.

Been saying that all night, and when it happens I will make a thread and drink ALL of the salty tears.

I think the other thing people will pull from this, besides Romney telling Jim Lehrer he's going to fire him and Big Bird to his face, is that Obama actually got some good lines off.

Romney's energy worked better for watching it in one go. I think Obama will come off better when chopped up into soundbites.

It doesn't come as a shock that the challenger would say I am going to do good stuff without doing any of the bad stuff. That is what challengers always say and Mitt Romney especially.

Bill Clinton would have obliterated Romney tonight.

Not that Romney has a shot at it. But debates can totally turn the tide if done right. Reagan and how he handled his debate is a huge reason why he went from trailing to dominating. He owned the debates

So are all the tea party guys going to go ape shit over all the 180s Romney made tonight? Of course not sigh..

Repubs dont actually care about the issues. They fully endorse any rape and pillaging done in the effort of furthering the chance of a Repub victory. Repubs are ecstatic tonight Mitt seemed presentable, irregardless of what his stances are. Mostly they do this in part because they know damn well what will happen once the dust clears, they just stomach all the lies to get there.

Good chance Romney jumps ahead of Obama in the polls after this

This may be the end if him

Ohio going over to Romney now, they liked how he controlled the debate and "trickle down government" was a winner. Besides, saving the auto industry wasn't that important.

Now if some real disaster happened (sorry the riots don't count in a major way) tonight's debate would be a good chance for Romney to actually get back in the race.

Yes - he etch-a-sketched his entire campaign and attacked him from the center. If Obama and his team isn't smart enough to see that coming (though his campaign has telegraphed it many times) thats one problem.

Obama was crashed in his opening lines. The first words out of his mouth were terrible and it was downhill from there. If he couldn't figure out how to attack Romney he should have just made his case and left Romney untouched, but he failed at that as well.

He was steamrolled and its clear if he had any less a lead the election would be over. Its his poll numbers in Ohio that are keeping him alive.

Yes pretty much. Imagine how the right will react if by any chance polls widen!

not really hard for Reagan he was up against an unarmed opponent....
