He writes how he talks. He uses too many words to express very little. This isn't a grr, I don't like the way Patrick writes. His articles are genuinely terribly written. It reads like someone who wants to be a writer very badly but never actually received criticism.

He writes how he talks, yes, but that's because he's writing a review, not a press release. Also, you manage to say one thing, and then completely contradict yourself in the very next sentence.

Not to mention "If you love yourself some Deus Ex" is just a poorly transcribed colloquialism. His reads like how he would talk on the bombcast, not how an actual review should be written.

Oh, there's an specific way that actual reviews should be written in? We need to be sure Scoops McKlepek is made aware.

That doesn't excuse a lack of professionalism. I know Giant Bomb is an easy-going site and a lot of what they produce is relatively fast and loose, but I personally don't expect that attitude toward reviews. There's a time and a place for that sort of writing style (See Jeffs comedy news articles) but reviews aren't one of them. Patrick is just not a very good writer and uses uncommon words to fluff himself up a bit.

Not that I hate Patrick though, I like his Worth Reading articles (most of the time) and I'm really glad there's a member of staff so into horror games which is a genre I really love too. I don't think GBs news reporting would be half as good as it is without him either. He's just annoying.

You raise a good point, and I think there's definitely a line between professionalism and casual that GB follows closely and for some there might be too much goofing around. I do think reviews are a special case though and should attempt to be as informative and forth right in their position as possible.

Guys, this isn't new. Giant bomb reviews have been written in a conversational style from day one. Now, some of the guys may have a different spin on this than others, but its a common trait for their written content.

If you want to get out a red pen and start marking up the text, you can do that but there's no point singling out one guy for using this style on the site.

For whatever its worth, I actually prefer it when they don't fall back on spoken word sentence structure and attempt for a slightly more formal structure, but that's just one man's opinion. I think it leads to shorter, tighter sentences.

I agree with this. I am singling Patrick out because his reviews take it too far. The dishonored review is a particularly egregious example.

Damn, I'm inspired. I need to step my SimGolf game up. Currently sitting on a rather haphazard 18 hole course in a location I don't love but it's making me money. Not sure whether to concentrate on landscaping and redoing courses now that I've got the whole map to work with or start over somewhere nice. Feels like I'm only scratching the surface though, looking at that post and linked articles.

I'd suggest starting a new course in a bigger spot once you've got good income going. Starting from scratch with a bunch of money and knowing how to build Classic holes, so awesome. :)

Ugh you've made it even worse! Haha. In the Dishonoured quick look within 2 minutes 20 seconds Patrick mentions both "systems" and "AI systems" followed by Ryan saying "gameplay systems'.

Ostensibly, contextual systems.

Edit: Thanks brianmcdoogle, I am now in a coma.

Haha first thing I noticed watching it. And on the subject of the Dishonoured Quick Look, am I the only one who doesn't have a huge problems with the way stealth games work? The GB crew has expressed their frustrations with the genre in the past, about it being a bit unforgiving and frustrating, but I've never personally taken issue with these aspects. Maybe I've just been avoiding the worst offenders.

I don't get why people have problems with the term "System". Working for a game studio myself that's an expression we use all the time. That's really how a game works. It's a bunch of systems strung together by a narrative.

The only time I've experienced a stealth game in a way they seem to experience all of them was when I played Family Guy: The Game.

What the shit. My Russian isn't very good, but I think I'm reading that Game Bomb has 26 user reviews for Resident Evil 6 and Giant Bomb only has 6.

Edit: They also have four times as many subscribers on Youtube!

Amazing.

I imagine a C&D wouldn't do much at all considering it's a Russian domain, huh?

The GB crew have always been more fascinated with the idea that a ridiculous bizarro world Russian knockoff version of themselves exists at all than the nebulous legal aspects of it.

Russia don't care.

The most amazing thing I remember about Gamebomb.ru is that they reviewed Brink and gave it 3.5 stars, 6 months before it was released. Then, Jeff reviewed it and gave it 3 stars.
