Mitt Romney: ‘We Don’t Have People Who Die Because They Don’t Have Insurance'

Yes, because living without insurance, living with any number potential of undiagnosed illnesses, and having to go to the emergency room to save your life is such a great way to handle healthcare in this country.

We seriously cannot elect this guy.

Why would anyone want to vote for this man? Seriously.

Voters who would vote for him:

1. Obama is black. I hate black people, so I want Romney.
2. Obama is a muslim. I hate muslims, so I want Romney.
3. I hate homosexuals. I want Romney.
4. I love my guns. I want Romney.
5. I hate godless liberals. I want the continued freedom to believe in my woman hating, slavery promoting God.

etc. etc. ad nauseum.

If we lived in a just society any leader that said something this stupid would be immediately disqualified from running for office. Either that or have his insurance stipped and be infected with bone cancer. Go to HELL you rich, sociopathic asshole because you surely belong there.

Sounds about right.

But... GUYS. This man can talk better than Obama in debates. Surely that makes him a better president despite all he has said so far right?

You forgot rich people. Rich people fucking love other rich people. Also, people who think they will be rich one day regardless of their own situation and needs because of the "American Dream."

I also find it hilarious that death is the qualifier here. As long as they don't die it's fine, the millions of people who are suffering every day with their problems and aren't insured, they don't matter. They could live better lives, but who gives a fuck?

As an American with health insurance, let me just say that any country that doesn't provide for it's citizens and COULD if it so chose, disgusts me to my very core.

Especially when that country spends more on it's military then the next 26 countries combined (I believe that's the proper figure, IIRC).

Just disgusting. And this damned "rugged individualism" we are all so in love with is the cause of it all.

In America, every 4 years you can presume the worst is going to happen. Sometimes you get a nice surprise and are wrong, though.

I've no doubt he'll get elected, because this country gets the leadership it asks for.

It's really not surprising anymore. If you read up on some of the stuff he did at Bain he is clearly a very immoral person and will just tell you what you want to hear, even if it's BS. This is what is happening now. He's fleecing everyone. And I think the average American isn't going to go out and determine whether or not he's telling the truth. They assume he's telling the truth and just implicitly trust him. It's incredibly scary.

This guy doesn't get it . He thinks cancer treatments are done in the er? Jesus christ. Why doesn't he outline his whole healthcare plan instead of shtting on obamacare, a plan that has helped many fellow Americans in need. Disgusting.

Romneycare is almost exactly the same as Obamacare. This is the funny part of it all.

Only downside to democracy. Stupid people have as much power as intelligent people.

It's so pathetically obviously that he will do anything, anything to get what he wants, and he wants the power of the President so fucking badly it's sad.

He either has a massive inferiority complex or is terrified of being forgotten and wants to be immortalized by having his name recorded in the annals of this country.

There isn't a fucking bone in that man that wants to take up the Office for any other reason than self gain.

As an outsider I have to say with a small degree of guilt that its going to be hilarious if this guy gets in the white house, will be very interesting viewing and I can only be grateful there is a ocean between us.

Or, you know, the many voters who prefer Romney for economic policy reasons. I don't think that you actually think that everyone who votes Republican thinks that way.

And no, I don't support Romney myself. I happen to strongly disagree with his proposals, as limited and vague as they are.

2. You believe govt is the problem.

Fixed it for you. Racism is definitely part of it, but not for the majority of Repubs. Although how many Birthers I've met does make me doubt it.

6. People who don't understand economics or are paid shills for "libertarian" ideals (See: Mercatus Center).

His economic policy doesn't exist. It revolves around fixing everything by doing everything without detailing anything.

So sure, there's people out there who are voting for him because he's going to fix whatever they want fixed, which is what he's fantastic at selling: nothing.

People end up only getting acute care because they don't have insurance. If they had insurance they may have actually gotten care before the problem became acute. Yes people die because they did not have insurance. This is stupid.

1. Global Warming.

2. Bombing Iran.

3. Distinct Possibility of Trade War with China.

You should be scared of this guy. Your ocean won't save you.

I think the vast majority of people who are planning on voting for Romney are voting for him because he's not Obama, not because they believe he's better than Obama. They want a change and I think if you put any of the Republican candidates in there these same people would vote for that candidate because he's not Obama.

Romneycare is almost exactly the same as Obamacare. This is the funny part of it all.

Yup. It's how we got two terms of W. I just really wish voters would seek information before making a decision as important as this one. If Romney gets into office this country is in deep trouble.

Individual states running their own programs won't ensure that everyone has access to a minimum standard of care and adequate protection for catastrophic illness. The federal government needs to provide that for everyone and our taxes need to pay for it. If the well to do want more let them buy it from private insurers.

This isn't about insurance. This is about access to care. Emergency rooms are going to do the minimum required by law then turn you out. That's not enough.

I feel ashamed that this guy is even in my city right now. What the hell. I just. I don't even..

Isn't romney back to being neck in neck with obama in the polls now too?

Snake Oil for America

Hey man, they're not dead. Isn't that enough?

6. People who don't understand economics or are paid shills for libertarian ideals (See: Mercatus Center).

What ARE Romney's policies?

So far all I know is

1. A 153 page book with 58 policies. Too long so he can't go into details.
2. It'll just get better if he's elected.
3. Magic.

Oh I agree with you. I'm just saying that it's clearly misleading to imply that 100% of people that vote Republican do so because they're afraid of a "gay muslim socialist that will take their guns" or whatever.

For what it's worth (anecdotal evidence incoming), I graduated with an economics degree recently after writing an honors thesis. I'd say that roughly half of the people in the honors thesis course were strongly conservative and it was for entirely economic reasons. Concerns about the deficit, tax structure, etc. Again, I don't agree with them, but they were basing their beliefs off of philosophical reasoning, their interpretation of the data, and so on.

Care to tell that to my coworkers who can't afford to retire due to need of health insurance, you son of a...

This too. If someone would like to retire at 55 or 60, well, they can, but they won't be able to get medicare. In the meantime, they'll need to pay for their own insurance, and retiring early means giving up the insurance provided as a job benefit, which can be 5 figures cheaper than an individual plan.

As people of average intelligence have been asking for the last 18 months of this campaign.

Exactly!

Having insurance encourages people to take steps toward preventative care which in the long run saves EVERYONE money.

Fucking christ.

Guys, I think Mittens has no idea how Insurance and Healthcare work.

Romney is a weasel.

The subject line of this thread is a very bogus statement but that is not what he said. He said:
“We don’t have a setting across this country where if you don’t have insurance, we just say to you, ‘Tough luck, you’re going to die when you have your heart attack,’  ”

And yeah, we'll take you to the emergency room. But we will let people whither away with chronic conditions up until they are at death's door. We'll then let them go to the emergency room where it is too late.

I can't stand the modern day Republican party; it is a damned joke. I wish the whole country turned out to vote and they wouldn't have a chance.

Healthcare is part of economic policy.

As I mentioned, republicans wanted to make it so that ERs would have to turn you away if you weren't carrying any ID. Have a heart attack in your living room and your wallet is in your bedroom? EMTs come in, wheel you out, bring you to the ER, whoops, no ID in your pockets, turn you away!

If Romney's party had its way we WOULD have people being turned away from hospitals while they're dying.

Healthcare is part of economic policy.

I'm missing the part where I said that Romney's economic policy proposals a) made sense or b) existed in a consistent way the first place. If I'm getting pounced on this much for simply saying that some people may vote for Romney for reasons other than overt racism, even though I've explicitly stated that I strongly disagree with his platform, no wonder actual conservatives don't feel like posting much, lol.

Edit: I don't want to derail the conversation here with the fallout from what I thought was a simple tangent. Yes, the quote from the OP is ridiculous and he hasn't presented any healthcare policy alternatives that make any sense.

You'll get emergency treatment when that heart attack hits, but you won't get preventive treatment to avoid the heart attack. Also, you will be in financial ruin. Which will indirectly lead to an early death.
