Back in my college town, I would draft almost every week so I built up a TON of Innistrad and Dark Ascension cards, but since graduating haven't played much limited. That means my Avacyn Restored, M13, and Return to Ravnica collections are pretty small.

Would you guys recommend buying a commons/uncommon playset for AVR and M13? Or just putting money towards a box (which will get you a crapload of commons/uncommons). I get can an M13 commons/uncommons playset for $36 on Ebay, which I consider pretty fair, but the Return to Ravnica is listing for at least $50, so I wouldn't consider that until the prices went down.

I usually just make/modify standard decks from whatever cards I have lying around. I made a "budget" green/white angel deck this week but it is hampered by missing cards like 2x Farseek and 1x Emancipation Angel. Is the bang for buck better for me just getting one of these bulk collections?

Depends on what you're going for. Do you want a collection of everything or are you more casual and just want to build a deck or two?

Ya, it's starting to make me not want to play standard anymore... But I also enjoy standard the most. :/

I've been trying to keep myself from going apeshit on this set because of that very reason. It's too damn expensive to keep up right at rotation. That said, the boxes are also super inflated right now. I wonder if we'll see them go on sale like M13 did, or if M13 just kind of flopped.

Ya, I only sort of want something for gameday. The top 8 promo is much less interesting though so I think I'm ok if I don't top 8.

Okay, so I really need another Trostani. She is seriously good.

My deck needs more early game, which I sort of anticipated. After some testing last night I have a good idea of what I need to do with it.

Bant populate/aggro is a lot of fun though.

What I'm thinking right now:

-3 Abundant Growth, +3 Cloudshift
-2 Deadeye Navigator, +1 Loxodon Smiter, +1 Cackling Counterpart.
-1 Sigarda, +1 Troatani.

Based on my testing last night. Gonna have to work further to up the early game though as it relies on Avacyn's Pilgrim too heavily I think.

I don't really care too much to have a collection of everything, but I do want to play a little seriously. I had a Tier-1 Wolf Run deck about 9 months this year, but putting a Tier 1 deck right now would be too expensive, so I'd rather just build fun but viable decks for now.

Magic cards are expennnsiiiivveeeeee
It's due to the player influx from RTR- there's a severe supply crunch w/ Innistrad block singles now.

I lucked out and found Olivias for $9 the day of the jump. I had been durdling on that card and should have gotten em for a few dollars less each because I knew she had improved a lot w/ rotation.

Eh, I would buy singles then. Most of them are so cheap and probably vast majority of commons/uncommons you'll never even use.

Same, I have 2 though so I'm hoping I wouldn't really need more... :/

Jund is B/R/G? Damn, no wonder everyone went jund.

The three color combinations are usually referred to as "Shards" and "Wedges."

Shards are made by taking a color and bringing in its two allied colors. The Shards have names that were coined during Shards of Alara block.

Esper - W/U/B
Grixis - U/B/R
Jund - B/R/G
Naya - R/G/W
Bant - G/W/U

Wedges are made by taking a color and bringing in its two enemy colors. There has not been a block based on wedge combinations, so we resort to these awful terrible names like "Bug" or "Rug" or "'Merica" or something stupid like that. Wizards needs to do a wedge-themed block so we can actually have some proper names for these combinations.

A wedge block would be interesting for the next block once Ravnica is over. A full on multicolor standard where any combination is made possible.

Right now I am running through some G/U/W and B/U/G experimentation.
Time will tell.

I think Bant is going to be powerful, especially when we see what comes out with Simic next set (UG).

We must hold the faith, Bant brother.

Gold blocks always get spread across multiple years because they're much harder to properly design and develop.

I would imagine that we'll see 3-4 more blocks before the wedge block (assuming it happens at all).

I wonder if we'll some day return to Alara, and maybe the mana would have changed during our time away, making it the wedge block.

That probably wouldn't fly with fans of the existing shards though, but it would be interesting.

I know but I wasn't around for Alara so I usually have to look it up to know the colors. I didn't realize jund had red in it and I finally looked it up is all.

Magic Online prelease events start tomorrow! Time to overpay for events with crappy prize support just to play with the cards sooner!

Yes, I will be. I can't help myself.

After our box yesterday had no Planeswalkers I bought a random single booster at the grocery today, because I have a problem, and cracked a Jace. Lol. Damn enabling packs making me want to buy more.

Counted $160 with the easy to value/trade cards.

I've been playtesting the RDW deck I posted earlier, and it is absolutely destroying everything I've played against so far.

Only questionable matchup so far is the spectral flight geist deck :(

Awesome. It would be nice to see RDW make some come backs.

I'm thinking about removing the Loxodon Smiters from my deck and replacing them with Precinct Captains. He doesn't bring as much beef right away, but I think it'll help me put some more pressure on early in the game without relying too heavily on a turn 1 Pilgrim, which is exactly what the deck needs based on my testing so far.

Either him or New Prahv Guildmage, but I'm thinking Precinct Captain.

Ill be testing both out tomorrow.

I'm going with either

or

for states. I think the RB version looks better.

Edit: 2x Torch Fiend are coming out of the sideboard for something else. Maybe Appetite for Brains.

Edit 2: We should really make a MTG GAF IRC channel

So you picked the one on the left? I'm making a deck myself, but I dont' have the hellkites. How does your deck do against the miracles deck? How do you handle it (or sweepers)?

edit: we talked it out in irc. deck is too fast vs miracles deck.

I quite like the sound of "American (U/W/R) Miracles", tbh. Although a proper wedge expac would be very welcome after Ravnica, considering all the gold support can carry over.
