Not sure what I was expecting. 299 is probably my blind purchase limit; for $500, it should have come with the Touch Cover. It is 32GB's however.

RT is pretty much dead to me. Pro or bust.

MS as a company, or the Surface as a product? The Surface as a product definitely comes across as premium to me. Some innovation thrown in with great design and build quality. Back when it was unveiled in June, you'd be hard pressed to find someone whose mind wasn't blown.

This. I think the Surface drummed up plenty of "desire".

But is more expensive isn't it? At that point you should add the $100 more and buy the Acer w700, the w510 is the only Atom tablet in my mind honestly
Both 64gb versions with the keyboard dock are i believe 750.

So what price are we estimating for Surface Pro? I'm still trying to decide on whether to wait for that or purchase the Vaio Duo 11 i7 on the 26th.

$200 more than i was expecting for a version without the keyboard.

Microsofts edge over apple has always been the price and an open system. They've thrown out both with the surface RT.

You're comparing Microsoft as a software company to Apple as a device company. Microsoft is trying to establish themselves at the premium OEM of the ecosystem and allowing other OEMs to compete as they traditionally would.

You can't build a premium product by pricing it higher.

This is something MS doesn't understand, and have never understood.

In order to create a premium line of product, you need to create desire, inspiration and panache! MS has none of that. I will stop here because nothing more need to be said.

Looking at the used materials, the attention paid to details such as the stand, the angled camera and the covers, the Surface is about as premium as it gets. And people know that and want that.

That's why there's a 170 page long thread about the Surface as opposed to no thread at all for the Acer Iconia W510.

Among the tech enthusiasts? Maybe. I even think this is one of the less desired tablets out there, compared to the pre-release hype I witnessed around shit tablets like the Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The general populace though? They probably don't even know what the thing looks like and the fact that it's only getting sold in Windows stores won't do it any favors.

Well the RT price made the decision easier, Acer with full Win 8 it is...for the same price.

Can that be updated with programs and apps? I.e. Music makers?

If so, that may be the one for me.

They watched it yesterday in the Monday Night Football and Dancing with the stars, I think some of the general populace are starting to knows what it is

I am sure the buyers of w510 (alone) to the Surface RT on this forum is at least 5:1. And I am not even buying the w510.

As much as it pains me to say this - apple is seen as premium, microsoft is not.

The general populace saw it all over Facebook back in June and probably forgot about it. Microsoft will be spending a lot of money to remind them over the next week or two.

I best hope they do. I still remember the superbowl ads for the Motorola Xoom though, lot of good it did them.

My programmer friends dont even know that RT tablets dont run desktop mode, they just assumed it did.

Most confusing launch indeed, and at these prices I dont blame them for assuming full desktop mode.

Has there ever been a photo of what a Surface looks like with the Type keyboard attached, but the two of them actually.. closed? Sandwiched together?

It does run desktop mode, it doesn't run x86 apps.

The Acer looks like the way to go, but that dock :P

Still love the form factor of the Surface and the pricing is pretty much what I expected

Looking forward to trying out these devices.

This is really the first showing of Microsoft as a device company. They will need to earn the reputation and the Surface is definitely a step in that direction.

they should fix the store page so that when you select the cheapest sku, it doesn't still say everywhere in the details that a touch cover is still included

But they have released hardware in the past. They attempted to go for the premium market and it just hasn't succeeded.

I am pretty sure that a lot of their hardware (mouses, keyboards, Xbox 360) is seen as premium, just the Zune and the Kin (ugh) don't

Holy shit at the pricing.

Holy shit.

I hope prices come down by the time the pro is out cause it's a definite no right now. I told y'all the $300 price was too good to be true, they're serious about that tablet/ultrabook duality.

Their 5-10 dollar range Microsoft rubber dome keyboards seen as premium? Doubt it, along with their mice. It all comes across as standard in my opinion.

360? sure, their mice and keyboards? lol, hell no!

Microsoft was in a lose-lose position with their pricing. If they priced it lower than Apple's offerings then they're basically making it seem like their product isn't as premium. They should have at least included the smart cover.

360 as premium? XBL maybe, but not the hardware.

I've never considered their mice or keyboards as premium (maybe their ergonomic keyboards).
